this is a 'version' of the old circa 1950s I think British Army issue Hexamine stove, the reason for it's size is issue Hexi blocks were one slab grooved to break split under impact or pressure the whole block would be packed inside hence the size of the base plate, the whole in the 'lid' is designed specifically to fit a BCB Crusader mk 1 steel mug
We used something similar in Australian Army. Meals were boil in the bag so you got to boil water then used that water to shave / wash with. We then boiled again to get a brew going - to enjoy after your meal.
That grate as you call it is a canteen cup frame. The canteen cup on the standard GI canteen is designed to be used as a cook pot and that frame holds it in place while it's heating.
Hello from Long Island just ordered two for my 72 hour bag my old esbet is going to the retirement home at the dump. Thanks for another fantastic video
These little folding stoves are one of our top three favorites for those situations where time or circumstances do not allow a campfire. There are a lot of modifications you can view on RUclips. We fabricated windscreens inserts from the aluminum in SPAM cans. We made two complete sets for each of our stoves. A back, and a front, for when the unit is fully open and when it is half closed for small pots. These devices can be multi-fuel. Solid alcohol cubes are all imported here in the Philippines and are high in price. We substituted gel alcohol intended for use as chaffing dish fuel. Bulk cans and bags may be purchased at restaurant and hotel supply houses. Basically, the same fuel as in the Sterno or other canned fuel products but much cheaper. We fill recycled plastic dish detergent bottles of various sizes to carry and dispense the fuel. Small aluminum caps from olive oil, booze bottles, and other small dishes are filled and contain the burning fuel. This set-up is a favorite for practice sessions with our young troops because, in the event of a tip-over, the burning fuel will not spread like liquid alcohol. I recently viewed a rack/pot stand made from a small-diameter bent steel rod. The ends fit into the holes or hollow rivets on the stove and provide enough height to allow the use of your Trangia-style spirit burner under the cooking pot. The rack looks like a square-shaped U with a tiny bit of the ends bent outwards. Many home-brew alcohol burners will also work well inside the folder if they are small enough. I have also seen some pocket stoves sold with pot support made from a modified computer fan guard for a slightly higher price than the stove alone. I do not know if gel alcohol fuel cubes are readily available in the US. We were fortunate that my Brother-in-law nailed several large bags in assorted cube weights at auction houses where he purchases stock for his reselling business. Another pot support we have seen from DIY videos is a simple hardware cloth (usually in stainless steel) that is bent to fit over the top of the stove, similar to the one demonstrated in this video. A cautionary note, hexamine was made with arsenic in the formulation in the past. I do not know if this is still true. The tablets were not terribly dangerous if used out of doors. They were never intended for use inside a building or a tent/shelter. The most significant danger occurred when the tablet was extinguished. The smoke got you Heximine burns hot and is an excellent fuel; if you can find it at a reasonable price point. I suggest users check the formula of newly manufactured hexamine and use due caution.
These are great with tablets or twigs. Not sure if you mentioned it, but the top plate is specifically designed to fit the BCB Nato spec Crusader Cup system. Its the British water bottle system where a stainless steel cup fits on the bottom of the water bottle and a windscreen fits on top. These are great for quickly getting a brew up when you are on the trial because the cup slots right into the hole. Ironically.... these are quite expensive over here in the uk lol
I have this same stove but by Stansport Fold-A-Stove. I don't have that top piece but a good hack is to use 3 metal tent peg rods or 3 very large (timber) nails and lay them across, in the notches to form a steady platform but NOT good for grilling. I'm looking for some kind of rollable metal mesh to use with the rods/nails or make a solid grill from a junk shopping cart (eg.). This stove is very versatile with any fuel source that fits in it. Not only wood and fuel tabs but also small cans (buddy burners) like Sterno, Vienna sausages, tuna, alcohol (hic..151 rum please) or Heet. Yes, you can also use tea light candles but, c'mon, you'd need 4 or 5 candles. This stove is VERY quick to set up/take down (a few seconds), compact and lightweight. A very logical choice for urban/ wilderness survival 👍. This is a Soldier's type of stove. And along with my G.I. canteen cup stove, I can cook a 1 Soldier feast. In the time that it takes for other people to ASSEMBLE their stupid little hipster stove, my food is almost done cooking. By the time they finish eating, I've already smoked my very satisfying after meal cigarette and loading up or bedded down. Yeah, I like this little stove. It's like a hot rod pickup truck (El Camino), cool 😎 and muy caliente🔥 at the same time. Gets the job done FAST. If you get this stove (I know you will), buy or borrow, you'll see that it's a keeper. Believe me you buddy, right now. Well, that's my VERY humble 😌 and honest opinion. GOD Bless the U.S.A. AIRBORNE !!
👍👍👍. I use a little (made from a) 200ml Energy Drink Alcohol Burner in my Esbit Folding Stove. It works perfectly. I see no reason why one wouldn't also work well in that version.
Great video brother maybe you could use a small altoid tin To Hold and contain the liquid from the fire starter or even make a small tray out of heavy aluminum foil. James Bender at RUclips channel (waypoint survival) made a very cool alcohol stove from a small altoids tin hello from Detroit Michigan great video brother
French 24H hours ration still have an Esbit fuel stove. Depending where you are you probably can get a ration for 15-30 Euros with the stove. Not as cheap as the one featured here but... you get three meals :) One thing to note though, Esbit tablets *reek*. Hexamine sublimes at a relatively low temperature and will happily go contaminate everything in the ration not in a can. I had a pair that had been stored in the sun that were unedible.
Spend the 60-80$ and get yourself a stove like this one, maybe a little larger, they are about 25-40$ and then snag a propane or duel fuel camp stove, anywhere from 20-50$ I have both along with a grill and outdoor fire pit/cook top all for back ups to our stove. But the main 2 are the first 2, and for stoves like this if you get the larger one you could even use it for a smaller heat source paired with something else could keep a room from freezing
I can get a homemade trangia type stove, 75 ml bottle of alcohol and a small bic lighter. Works well with a crusader cup for brewing a beverage and cooking noodles on a day hike.
I got the best set up Coghlan's old fold out with a gas mini burner with metal coated hose that slips out on the side. But you can still use other methods, also sardine can with metho. Those cubes stink.
nice stove, or actually the top piece is really good, maybe weld a couple pieces of wire across it... I carry a mayo jar lid in my kit it works for those goopywet tabs and even can use alcohol in the jar lid .....
Hey brother I have a question . Wonder if you could use those tea candle's. They would be cheaper than the tabs. I don't know about how long each would burn but just thought I'd ask. Glad you showed this. IT will be the next thing I get. Ty. Love and blessings to you all guys ❤️🌎🕯️.
How long do you want to wait for your hot water ? Tea candles are useless outdoors when there is any wind, barely make light and leave trash (the Al cup). Some cavers friends do put a row under their hammock for warmth though.
Esbit is a brand, you should be able to find tablets by the brand name. You might find "generic" tablets. The composition is hexamine and trioxane; Anything mentioning any of those should be good.

French ration still have this kind of fuel and stove. It is *very* reusable but not as much as the one featured in this video.
German.

I just bought one a few weeks ago for my car bag. Tested it with small alcohol stove works great. Thanks for sharing.
I just ordered it, using your link. Was on sale for $7.99!!!

As per the suggestion to use a small can for the sol cube. That's what I'm using to contain hexamine cubes under the US canteen cup stove.
👍👍👍.
I use a little (made from a) 200ml Energy Drink Alcohol Burner in my Esbit Folding Stove. It works perfectly.
I see no reason why one wouldn't also work well in that version.
I recently did a very short video on an esbit stove. Worked great to boil water. Definitely going in my day hike and bushcraft backpacks.
Got one similar to British military version. It works well. The top rim is new to me. I'll look for this version. Paraffin fire lighters work too

I have a windshield for a BCB stove to blank off one side of this stove and find I don't need any sort of additional windshield

Yeah back in 2017 I did a video on one of them you can see it here and it came with the stove and tablets ruclips.net/video/7QhHj7vyD_g/видео.html
Could You Please Do A Wood Burn Demo??
Thanks. Really enjoy your videos.

i have quite a few all British army issue the cut out on top is designed for NATO crusader mug worth trying a USA equivalent
I bet that could hold a tiny alcohol stove especially the homemade drink can or cat food can stove
Works great with Altoids tin can too
Yup, that's what I do. It can use solid fuel tabs, an alcohol stove, or use it as a twig stove.
I can get a homemade trangia type stove, 75 ml bottle of alcohol and a small bic lighter. Works well with a crusader cup for brewing a beverage and cooking noodles on a day hike.
I wonder if a tea candles would work in that little stove. I like it 👍🤗
If you have a lot of time to heat whatever you are heating and there is no wind maybe...
I got the best set up Coghlan's old fold out with a gas mini burner with metal coated hose that slips out on the side. But you can still use other methods, also sardine can with metho. Those cubes stink.

Yeah they would work well in this
generally speaking normal tea lights burn for average 3 hours, Jumbo tea lights burn for approx 9 hours

Ótimo vídeo Parabéns muito bom isso
If you stand the small tablets on their side they burn hotter for a shorter time
Great content as always two 👍 👍 way up
rogue preparedness sent me
Good morning!
Nice little stove
Thank you for the information.
Ótimo fogão aí Parabéns 👍
Fun fact, it will also hold a deck of cards.
Liked and subbed. Great video!
Can you please write the name of the large tablet that worked and where can they be purchased? Thank you!
Its a cutting board I got at walmart think it was under 5 dollars
Check your local surplus store or online.
They are labeled:
Fuel, Compressed, Trioxane
Esbit is a brand, you should be able to find tablets by the brand name.
You might find "generic" tablets. The composition is hexamine and trioxane; Anything mentioning any of those should be good.
That's decent for under $10.
Great video!
I wonder if an alcohol stove fits & works with it?
SOL cubes. I am more interested in that.
Would a small can of Sterno work?
It would
If you want to put a stove grate over that big hole.
Put those in an empty cat or tuna food can!!!!!
