Had a banner spring with lots of rain to seed and transplant without worring about deep watering. I love being in spring rain with muddy hands.
But now I believe we may officially be on the verge of a drought.
My bugs: black flies killed every eggplant. Cabbage moth worms killed every brassica. I did manage to salvage some cabbage heads to make a gallon jar of fermented cabbage.
Everyday I scout for squash bug eggs and remove them from my pumpkin, zucchini and spaghetti squash. Thus far, the vines look good and are bearing fruit. Mexican bean beetles got my string beans. Revenge was pulling out the plants and tossing them on the compost heap and watching the chickens hunt the bright yelloe caterpillars down.
I pulled some gornworms off the tomatoes. No big damage and it is another chicken treat. I know cucumber beetles are around. Ive seen a few, and like you, I toss them in a bicket of water. Another chicken treat. Best thing I've seen on my garden plants was the eggs of the parasitic wasp.
This far, I believe the chickens were the primary beneficiaries of my garden bounty, more bugs than produce.

I’m begging for chickens next year. We keep saying we’ll get them but never make the investment. I think the bugs this year are a sign that it’s time. Mexican bean beetles destroyed my blackbeans last year so I feel you, had a few adults pop up that we eradicated quickly (used to think they were lady bugs, but now I know better!)

It’s my “second” full time job, (lol) but it usually doesn’t feel like work, I enjoy every minute out in the garden. Thank you 😊 🙏
