On the 13th of September this year, Mahsa Zhina Amina was arrested in Teheran by the so-called morality police. Her crime: incorrectly wearing the obligatory hair covering or hijab.
Three days later she was reported dead - the police said, “heart attack”, “coma”. But witnesses saw how she was severely beaten with batons to the head in the van where these “moral” policemen took her.
That was the beginning. The weeks following saw women burning their shawls, cutting their hair, pouring into the streets to protest the brutal, despotic Islamic regime.
After 43 years of repression, forbidden to ride bikes or motorcycles, to sing publicly or play instruments, to go to football or to travel without the permission of a male relative, young woman are rising up. They are shouting; they are singing, “Woman - Life - Freedom!” And thousands are joining them as protests spread all across of Iran.
The government answered with violence. The internet was shut down, media shut out. Policemen and military began shooting not only water cannons and tear gas, but live ammunition, indiscriminately into protesting crowds. There have been hundreds of deaths, among them, 64 children. Thousands of injuries and tens of thousands of arrests. Yet the protests continue.
Culminating tonight, students have called for a three-day general strike, demanding not only freedom from arcane moral codes, but an end to a villainous and brutal government that murders its own citizens and threatens world peace.
After 16 weeks of protest, this is where #iran stand.
