  • The most common chest x-ray finding in a patient with a thoracic aortic aneurysm is mediastinal widening. Calcification of the outer wall can occur, but it is a relatively uncommon. Large aneurysms can cause lateral displacement of the trachea and inferior displacement of the left main bronchus. Aneurysms that are limited to the ascending aorta typically cause a right-sided bulge, and when large, can form the upper right border of the heart. Aneurysms that are limited to the descending aorta typically cause a left-sided bulge.

Chest x-ray didn't show my ascending aneurysm until I had a type A Dissection. My surgeon said x-ray WOULD NOT SHOW MY ANEURYSM is this true?

A chest x-ray can show signs of an aortic aneurysm, such as those mentioned in this lecture. However, no test is perfect. Such that it is possible for an individual chest x-ray to not reveal any signs of aneurysm.

@@Med4VL my aneurysm was at Root and ascending so I guess heart was blocking vision of aneurysm. I now have a Mechanical heart valve and everything replaced from Root, Ascending and Arch. Still Dissecting up to left carotid and down both iliacs. My older brother has aneurysm in Same spot but didn't tell anyone in the family.
