My favourite is tree 1. They have nice fibrous root systems, do you repot annually? My orange dream supermarket tree is not as nice as those, but it too is leafing- out. Must be a strong variety I guess?
Hi. No I don't repot anually. I think it is better to let the tree get its feet under it so to speak. The tree uses a lot of energy the first year filling the pot with roots, then second year can get going again. I often leave them 3 years between repotting unless I think they are struggling.
I use a mix of Kitty Friend non clumping cat litter, horticultural grit and compost. Varying the amounts of each depending on species. For these maples I was using 3 2 1 parts respectively. Stay safe
@@SidsTrees OK cool. Looked like akadama but I could see the grit when it was wet. I'll see if I can find that cat litter. I keep meaning to have a proper look at them and just buy one to see what happens.
@@StephenTurnerVlogs the only place I found it in the UK is it pets at Home. it functions very like akadama for a fraction of the price. whatever you get it must be non clumping or you're just have a slushy mess that will drown your roots.
It is a mix of basic compost, potting grit, and Kittyfriend Pink non clumping cat litter. The latter is quite hard to get hold of locally, so I had to buy it online. It is a molar clay particle that holds moisture and at the same time drains freely much like the akadama clay they use in Japan. Don't yse any old litter as a substitute. Most cat litters are NOT suitable for bonsai as they break down quickly to mush and "drown" the roots, killing your trees.
Your supermarket trees are coming along nicely. I’m keeping an eye out for when they sell them again usually £3 for the small ones. They make great little starter trees, I’ve put a couple in the ground to fatten them up 😂 I have two of the plastic trays in the greenhouse one I keep for potting on the other to hold compost, they are really handy.
Gotta love a bargain. I've never bought a "bonsai tree". Sometimes I will pay up for something special or unusual like the large white flowered Wisteria, but I'd rather spend my money on tools or pots.
Giving us the elbow now huh!? lol!!🤣 Loving both of them Sid, I only have the one Orange dream and absolutely love the color but than, I'm a bit of an Acer addict and have quite a few (sticks) Might be keeping them small though as most the time my body doesn't let me do much and thus hoping I can keep them all. Looking forward to the next video 💖👍😊💖

Mark here great video👌👍 love those maples! I live here in the U.S and I was looking at some cat litter and the only one I think is a good one here in the U.S. was Forever Pals nonclumping unscented I would like to know your feedback on this Cat litter? I've never used it and would like to know if it's good to use for Bonsai soil?
After doing a quick search I found an image of the packaging and it appears to be the same. However I couldnt find any images of the product itself, so I would say use with caution. It needs to be of a baked clay particle, non clumping. Why not try potting up a cheap and not precious plant in it for a couple of weeks. If it is ok then your trees should be too.
@@SidsTrees ok will do it says nonclumping and it does say clay so I will try it with caution! I have a couple of Hobbit Jade cuttings that I will pot up in that soil for 2 weeks like you said and I will let you know how it goes with the cat litter thanks for the feedback much appreciated 👍 look forward vyo your next video.
More reasons to buy more trees, :) Already keeping an eye out for them stocking the little greenhouse at my nearest store. Not had much luck with Orange Dream's in the past myself, they've either burnt in the sun or shriveled up from the wind that just seems to get worse every year. Non of my current maples have shown themselves yet, buds are only just starting off here in East Yorkshire.
You're right about them being too delicate for the sun and wind. Need some protection for sure. We're always a little earlier down here. Love Yorkshire though, have had more than a few family holidays there.
Hey there Sid. Both trees are fantastic. I do like the first maple you repotted though. It has a very nice silhouette at this stage. Do you ever reuse your soil? Thanks as always for your videos
Thank you. The cat litter holds up quite well and obviously the grit doesn't break down so those elements can be used again. Rinse away the old potting compost, roots and other debris and you have a base from which to start from. You may want to sterilise it to prevent disease build up. I personally prefer to start afresh as it's a bit of a faff and I know the proportions. I spread my used soil on the lawn to help with drainage. Where Cooper runs up and down tends to become a bit of a mudbath each winter.
@@fortheloveofthewhippetnijm8125 if you check my video on Chinese Elm ruclips.net/video/ysX2S42bjIc/видео.html at around 12 mins in I talk about my soil mix. I was lucky to find these. Right place right time I guess. Course these weren't grown for an actual nursery but for a supermarket chain which probably explains the difference. If you chop yours next spring you can begin to build some taper. Stay safe
