Zach mentioned lo fi girl giving Ghibli vibes so fun fact: lo fi girl is based off of a character from another Ghibli movie, Whisper of the Heart!
They need to watch it! I reckon it'll speak to their soul because they're creatives.
Kiki’s delivery service was and is everything to me. You have child representation with Totoro and young adult with Princess Mononoke. Kiki fit right in between and helped speak to that awkward stag in between.
I need them to do Princess Mononoke next. I watched it for the first time as an adult and I was shook at how graphic it is
Hey, I'm from the Midwest. I'm surrounded by Amish, and there's even some intermarriage in my family. (My aunt married an Amish man who left his community)
Rumspringa is supposed to be about experiencing what they call "English" life or modern life. They get cell phones, and a lot of them will get their driver's licenses.
The drugs and partying is mostly true, though. Police do raids sometimes on barn raves. A literal rave party in a barn in the middle of nowhere. Meth is a huge problem in our area, including amongst the Amish.
But yes, lots of Amish teens drink, take drugs, and start experimenting sexually during Rumspringa. Not everyone, obviously, but it's common.
This is so interesting, thank you 😂
My grandfather left the Amish after Rumspringa and became a doctor. It allowed him to realize that he wanted to leave the community. It’s an amazing tradition to help the isolated community’s children have the opportunity to know what they are saying no to and make their own decisions
@graceb8659 That's awesome! I'm happy for your Grandfather and family. I understand the purpose of this tradition is about the community's young people coming of age and choosing their own life path. I'm sorry if what I wrote was minimizing that experience.
My intention was to confirm that, unfortunately, some kids do fall in with drugs and partying during their Rumspringa. Honestly, though, that's true for teens in general. Some party and experiment with drugs/sex, and some don't.
Yes to a new Studio Ghibli classic being discussed. Also, bonus points for Zach wanting to start with ‘Let’s Have A Kiki’.
Kiki means vagina in one of the dialects in my country! 😅
Zach and Maggie’s should be Tombo and Kiki for Halloween
Fun fact, there is a Kiki bakery/cafe in Seoul. I went for my birthday back in March. It is so stinkin cute and all the drinks and desserts were so good. High recommend if anyone is ever in Seoul
It's funny to think that Disney once had a problem with a child drinking coffee in a movie, while they definitely have a child very obviously drinking coffee in Encanto.
It’s very funny to think about! But I think it’s also in part that fact that Disney is embracing more diverse stories about other cultures. I know in Latin America, it’s very common for younger children to have a bit of coffee (granted it’s always more milk than coffee 😂) with the family & because the coffee there is so much more natural and delicious!
Kiki is the best. Fun fact: The scenery is modelled from places in Sweden, my home country. Especially Stockholm and Visby, the main city on the island of Gotland. Miyazaki and the artists for the movie travelled to Sweden for it! :D
LMAO Kelsey saying "This is one of the most wholesome episodes we've ever done" as though she hadn't been talking about c*m in her hair at the beginning. I live for her.
THE SCREAM I SCRUMPT WHEN I SAW THE TITLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Howl's 👏🏿 Moving 👏🏿 Castle 👏🏿 please do it!
Lol! Kelsey not drinking coffee as a teen, but doing other things 😂
Yeah, my high school days, the cool girls totally showed up with a Starbucks drink everyday.
It took me so long to realize that the representation of depression is one of the reasons this is/was one of my favorite movies from my childhood. I struggled with depression from such a young age that this really resonated with me and it’s such a beautiful movie that I still enjoy with my kids to this day.
you can actually go to an olive farm in japan where a scene was inspired from
I went there a few weeks ago!! 😄
My colombian self was giggling with the coffee conversation. We start drinking coffee at age 1 😂
I used to play this movie nonstop to the point where my sister got sick of it. What's weird is that 20+ years later and its more relevant to me, now more than ever. I work as an artist and i've been burnt out for over a year and can't bring myself to paint anymore, so the main theme of this movie really hits home. Have a lot of love for this movie 🖤
fun fact: lofi girl originally came from another ghibli movie: whisper of the heart. there's a single shot of the main girl doing homework with her headphones on and that's it. That's lofi girl. I def recommend whisper of the heart too, another chill, kinda existential movie
Kiki's is what i watch when i hit writer's block. it always cures it. I'm so happy to see you guys talking about my favorite movie of all time
it's my art block movie too!!
This movie was my first introduction to Studio Ghibli and hence has the most special place in my heart. You're absolutely right Zach! It does feel like a warm hug!!
ghibli's whisper of the heart is also a cozy film that you should definitely check out
I wonder what their thoughts are on the 1998 dubbing? There was a ton more ad-libs in it (even though it strayed away from the original script), but I’m curious if they know about the different ending with Jiji!
This is my favorite Miyazaki movie. I had the vhs as a kid and watched it CONSTANTLY.
MY GASP. This is the greatest pre-Halloween gift. This movie means so much to me and I can't wait to hear you guys talk about it! (Now do Howl's Moving Castle, please and thanks)
i gasped so hard when i saw the title 😭 this movie made my little witchy heart so happy as a kid
Anime and no Garrick, why are you trying to hurt me...
The loss of Gigi was devastating for me, and why I can't rewatch the film.
When they talked about him not getting his voice back, I was so confused. Because when I would watch it as a kid in the 90s (American, English dub version), he runs up to her after she saves Tombo and he says something like “Kiki! Kiki!” And then she says “Jiji!” And he’s on her shoulders and he speaks the word “meow” in a sing-songy voice. So hearing that there are versions out there where he doesn’t speak ever again is so sad to me :0
1. Did we just talk about an "anime" movie without Garrick?😮
2. Are we not doing Tucci month in November ? 😢
I hope this doesn’t come across in the wrong way and I think I’m in the minority here since I never see comments about it but I really hate how Kelsey sexualizes everything. I know that is a big part of her personality and I love how confident she is in herself, but sometimes it really just bothers me. I don’t think it really has anything to do with her and everything to do with the fact that I’ve been struggling with my sex life (especially after having a baby) and sometimes I just don’t want to think about sex….No hate to anyone and I love you guys so much !
no Garrett on a Ghibli movie?! 😭
The love I have for this movie is unmatched! I had the VHS and watched it on repeat for years! This was my fixation comfort movie! I asked my husband for a copy for my 30th birthday in January
I’ve been having the absolute worst day, but seeing that you did my favorite childhood movie really softened my heart. Thank you so much!!
I just realized Kiki totally shaped my aesthetic (and life) goals - cute witch just living a simple comfortable life w/her cat 🥰
40, and we definitely were drinking coffee and hanging out at coffee shops before and after school 😂
DUDE! I can't wait to see Zaggie dressed as Paddington! ❤
I'm dressing as animated Giselle from Enchanted.
20:14
Kelsey. Kelsey. I promise you that this children's movie, about an actual child, is NOT a metaphor for erectile dysfunction 😭😭😭
I was age 17 to 19 when I first saw this movie, and no movie has ever made me feel like I could do friggin' anything in the world like this movie does. Still to this day when I watch it I feel inspired to TRY, to just go and do whatever it is I've been thinking of attempting, whatever change I've been wanting.
I was born the year this came out, but surprisingly my little British Grandma introduced me to this movie when I was in elementary school! 😍 I would watch it wrapped up in a quilt on the couch and eat my little snackies. Now I put it on at night for my kids, it's our cozy movie. 🥰
Jiji does talk in the end when she gets her powers back! (At least in the English-American dubbing)
Tbh, I watched Kiki in a very dark time in my life so it holds the same feelings as graveyard of the fireflies for me. But after this pod, I think I should revisit Kiki 🤔
I started drinking coffee regularly in middle school. But only after school. So Zach and Kelsey being shocked at rainies high school coffee drinking is hilarious
Okay I got CHILLS when you said The Orphanage because I’ve wanted you guys to discuss that movie on the pod for so long! Such an incredible movie that not enough people have seen!
Oh my gosh!! I love that movie!!! And Everytime I show it to people they have NEVER watched it. It's soooooo good. My favorite spooky film
These podcasts are what get me to work every day. ♥️ takes me an hour drive and it would be awful but these make it comforting 🥰
Mightve been a fever dream but I could've sworn MTV had a rumspringa reality show.
Omg what a great thing to wake to! My fav movie of all time, never thought I'd see you guys talking about this movie and like it so I'm extremely happy rn!! Watched it for the first time after just turning 12 (which was the prime age to see it), and when I tell you I became OBSESSED. Seen it so many times over the years and multiple times in theaters, and I never get tired of it. Like it means so much to me that I can't watch the opening scene of her on the hill without crying from how beautiful and peaceful it is
Nausicaa is my favorite but you *need* to do Mononoke next!
as a pennsylvanian, i'm screaming at the fact that no one but Zach has heard of this 😆 also: this is one of my favorite movies, thank you for covering it 💜💜💜
This was made the same year as Teen Witch & I cannot get that off my brain
I didn’t see a single studio Ghibli movie until I was like 23! My two sisters either, and now we’re all adults who are obsessed.
This movie is so comforting I love how quiet Ghibelline movies can be
Honestly, I wonder if there is a correlation between high schoolers drinking coffee and college admissions / AP classes getting so competitive. I started drinking coffee at 17 when I took my first AP class and I got maybe 3-4 hours of sleep a night, just because between after-school clubs, varsity sports, and a ton of homework, there was no way I could get through it all without caffeine. It's ridiculous how much is expected of children in school now.
The EXACT same situation for me. I started drinking coffee every morning during spring of my junior year, and would sometimes drink 5 hour energies at night 😳
Omg! I actually watched this movie on the Disney Channel! The animation and the characters had me entranced! Afterwards, never saw it again :( I thought it was like a fever dream or something. I finally found it again during college and it still remains my favorite 💖 This one and From up on poppy hill ✨✨✨
Clicked so fast, one of my favs
If I remember correctly, the og image that lofi girl is based on is from another Ghibli film, Whisper of the Heart ❤️
I had my own Kiki Phase last year. I didn’t like anything I drew or created and that art block took me a while to get out of. My crappy job had me in ultimate burn out mode. A year later, I’m drawing again and I quit that craptacular place. I’ve never felt so stress free. Also, in the OG English dub, JiJi DID speak again at the end of the movie. It irks me that they changed it.
This is my favorite studio ghibli movie of all time I’m so glad you guys covered this. It made me feel magic as a child in a way I haven’t experienced since
My school served coffee to students...I went to peer mediation training in middle school and we were given coffee and bagels each morning sooo ive been drinking coffee since 7th grade...
LOVE this movie! Thanks for covering this (:
Now that Kelsey is into horror movies, Guilty Pleasures should do an episode about The Babadook. If Kiki's Delivery Service is an excellent allegory for burnout and depression, The Babadook is an excellent allegory for grief and repressed trauma.
The way i screamed then i saw the thumbnail 😅 really love that you guys are doing this episode, THANK YOU
Yay, my first and favorite Ghibli movie! I was blown away and so inspired by this movie.
When zach was talking bout the burn out/depression.. i was fr starting to tear. I need to watch it. But knowing bout the cat. Im cryinggg. Honestly i question Miyazaki a lil because if you watch nautica. Lil miss had nothing and the wind was winding
Bout the coffee thing lol ye my entire middle school went for iced coffees during break or lunch. I think its so funny thinking back bc our hangouts wasn't to malls, it was sitting at a coffee shop nearby and talking lol
I was and am totally addicted without realizing and prob numbed myself out bc now in my 30s. It just makes me feel nothing or sleepy. We were definitely not educated on what caffeine was. Just bad like sugar.
Another horror movie rec like the orphanage. Watch korean aka the og version of A Talk of Two Sisters. It is obvious where its going but its just the emotional impact of the buildup. The despair.
I'm halfway through, so they may get to it. I hope they discuss that Jiji's voice in English is male and in Japan is female. Major differences in character/plot!
A lot of the Studio Ghibli movies are great cause of vibes alone
OMG I LOVE THE ORPHANAGE IM SO GLAD U PUT PEOPLE ON ZACH
I LOVE the Orphanage!! Dude watch it!!!
This is one of my favorite childhood movies that is still in my top 10 today😭❤️
i too have this movie deeply engrained in my childhood memories and watched it constantly but i could not tell you anything about it and i needed this podcast to refresh my memory 🤣
absolutely one of my top 3 movies of all time! i remember watching this so much that the sticker faded on the vcr, much love for this film!💙✨
I NEED Kelsey's review of princess mononoke!!!
BUT I remember when I was little there was a version where jiji speaks again in the end!! Idk when they changed the version.. it makes me sad :(
The ONLY gripe I have with this movie in general is that any digital streamer that exists now a days does not included the two fucking BOPS that Disney had paid for when they released it in VHS and I’m still mad!!!!!!!!!
I watched this movie this morniiiing!
Omg in my family we start drinking ucc milk coffee at like...5 😭😂 I started drinking stronger coffees like ca phe sua da around 12 and now at 30 I can have super strong coffee at like 5 pm and still be sleepy and ready for bed at 11 pm!
Please watch Howl's Moving Castle!
Can't wait to see Kelsey thirst over Howl 😆😆
You guys have to do Ponyo - I found Ponyo to be an even warmer hug its just comFORT - the ramen scene, the type of childhood love, the diff parental love types, the boss ass characters - its really good
This is my two year olds favorite movie she's being Kiki for Halloween!
Fun fact: the art that Ursula makes of the horse flying through the sky is actually drawn by elementary students in Aomori prefecture in North Japan.
This was my favorite movie as a child!
I also had this movie on VHS when I was little! ❤️
I'm so glad they are diving into Studio Ghibli films, they are my childhood!
It's probably my favorite Ghibli movie.
I'm almost 31 and ive been drinking coffee since before age 11 and in highschool my friends and i would meet up at the starbucks on the way to school at like 7am
i’m playing catch up with this podcast. not sure if you guys are still looking for international guilty pleasure films, but i would recommend shaolin soccer and Kung fu hustle!
Yay, perfect timing! I’m going to be Kiki for Halloween tomorrow!
“Every frame is a meal” rightttt
Zach, Grave of the Fireflies and Totoro were the double feature in 1988. Miyazaki meant them to be back-to-back.
I’m sorry…Gigi never talks again?? I’ve grown up watching this movie countless times, and I’ve always thought he was back to normal at the end. Did I manifest this???
We watched the Disney Version, in the Disney version Gigi talks in the end for a sec and has a bunch of witty lines. The Disney version also has that awesome song during the intro and the end credit. But Miyazaki's version cut a bunch of Gigi's lines and he doesn't talk in the end, also cuts out the indie songs during the intro (idk if the ending credit is still there tho). It's the only time where I think Disney was right and Miyazaki was wrong 😂
Kelsey needs to watch Tokyo Godfathers!
Follow your heart and keep smiling!
Y’all need to do Thankskilling. It’s thanksgiving, horror, camp. Perfect for y’all
A perfect guilty pleasure thanksgiving movie is “thankskilling”? I think thats the title. It’s about a radioactive killer turkey, that’s it. You’re welcome lol
I love Studio Ghilbi! I hope you guys do more of them!
Good horror movie with a twist: You're Next
For Halloween I'm going at the Mythical Kitcheneer I'm gonna have jorts cause obviously and then i have custom made Pilsner earrings and i got the apron, and the oven mitts. No one's gonna know who i am and I'm totally fine with that.
I get you Kelsey. I grew up watching an advertisement of it on vcr of whatever disney movie
Oh the later chuckie movies people hate because it dips into comedy but they are great. Comedy and horror is great together
My absolute favorite movie as a child!
I know I'm too late, but Homeward Bound is def a Thanksgiving movie
My very favorite Ghibli film followed by Grave of Fireflies
Kiki is my favorite, along with Howl’s Moving Castle ❤ I would love for guys to cover Isao Takahata’s ‘Grave of the Fireflies’
I named my cat Jiji because of this movie! However, I can never rewatch it because it makes me cry. Not because of the standard emotional scenes. But because Kiki loses her ability to communicate with Jiji, her best friend.
THE VIBESSsss
