    W123 is a pure 70's design. It's strange to think about that MB had it in production all the way to 1985. The S-class and 190 came with the much more modern 80's design already in 79 and 82. I guess it was too big task to also come out with the W124 in the begin of the 80's. I used to be a fan of the W123 style, but the later years I much more lke the cleaner and more timeless design of the W124. In my mind the most amazing cool E-class design. The newer E-classes again have gotten more 'messy' in their design.

    Thank you for this wonderful review of the MB W123 and W124; very impressive models from a very impressive carmaker. I was disappointed with the Swiss infatuation with speed bumps 😪 I hate speed bumps, and there are used amply in the third world country where I'm currently residing.

    • @DrivingwithGloves
      @DrivingwithGloves  Год назад +1

      Thank you for your feedback, I hate speed bumps too. Although Switzerland is a wonderful country to live, it has its limitations regarding driving. You mentioned already one of them. Another one is, that you have speed cameras everywhere and the fines for speeding are extremely high. On the otherhand you have magnificent roads with a beautiful scenery.

    • @MrMfaust5

      @@DrivingwithGloves Indeed, Switzerland has unbelievable idyllic nature. I was just thinking the other day as I went up and down speed bumps (35 bumps ranging from strips to small hills on a 25 km stretch of road!!) here (in a Cayenne) which I believe is a shame to drive a Porsche or Mercedes-Benz on rotten roads that are here. Maybe in Switzerland people wouldn't need speed bumps as the majority of Swiss people are law abiding, respectful people. I try hard to keep my cars in a beautiful shape, but then I remind myself: I'm most decisively not in Europe!

    We had the same colour with green interior auto sunroof and 4 speed automatic straight 6 250 from 1980.
    They are as good as new cars even better in city and on bad roads. Maybe some more aerolift after 160 km/h but still stabile at 200.

    When they brought out the E-Class for me that was the end of an era, until then Benz had been about quality, after then they were about looking like quality. We had a W123 from new for 20 years, Benz had changed by the time it needed replacing.

    Hey,Cor... this was really funny!......I like this Little running jokes... So, what you mean is, that this Cars are nothing for " Men without hat'", if they are not living in Switzerland, and if they live in Switzerland, they should wear a cap instead like You do, because of the tempo bumps?
    Changing your mind about the old men wearing' hats Shows may have two reasons: either we both Arne gettin' closer to this ages, or you show us your nice trait.
    I know, its the second one😉
    Thank you for all the work...

    I really enjoyed your video. I thought W124 was from 1986 to 1995 for the USA only. I have a 1987 OM603 turbo with 400K. I also just acquired a 1995 OM606 with 196K. Not fast by todays cars and so I would still never part with them both. Some say the 95"s were the last true MB.

    This is a good video - as i a long term owner of a W124, you’ve nailed all the good points. My only (constructive!) criticism/observation is that the sound of your voice is too low in relation to the music... other than that dank u welt!

    • @DrivingwithGloves
      @DrivingwithGloves  6 лет назад

      Michael Jones thank you very much for your feedback. I think the problem with the sound is due to the editing programm I use on my cell phone. I have noticed that the volume may vary depending on the device used. There is also sometimes an anoying clicking in the beginning or end of a recording. But since I only started making these videos using my cell phone, I know that there is still lot of potential on the technical side 😉

    We bought our 1989 300e in 1992 and kept it until 2019 and aside from regular servicing and tires the most it ever cost me was $7.50 Canadian for a set of Bosch brushes to repair my alternator. It was simply the most pleasant vehicle I have ever owned, and it is still going with over 330,000KM the young family that bought it are using it as a second car. I'am now older, and a widower and have no need for a larger car as the 4 door 300e so I'm keeping my eye peeled for a 190e 2.3 Cosworth or better a 350slc!! Thank-you for your review!!

      The E 320, E 220, and E 200 cabriolets ceased production in 1997. Indian assembly (in a joint-venture with Telco called Mercedes-Benz India) began in March 1995.[1] Offered with four-cylinder diesel engines built by Mercedes' Indian partner Bajaj Tempo,[9] the W124 was replaced there in December 1997.
      Local manufacture in Indonesia are known to continue production of the W124 until 2000 despite the W210 was already introduced in late 1996, making it the last country to locally produce the car since its worldwide discontinuation in 1995. At this time, only two variants were offered; the E 220 and E 320 (the other variants were discontinued in 1996).

I did not like the look of it. I liked though the W124. It was more modern. But by driving the w123 230E in the video, I must admit that it is very good car, even by todays standard!

      Driving with Gloves : I was referring to official German production, because even here in South Africa, it was produced until 1996. Also remember that specialised models like the station wagons and cabriolets / coupes are usually produced for a year or two longer as their new models are usually introduced a year or two after the official introduction of a new model range.

      I grew up with these cars as my Dad drove, first the 280E auto and then the 230E manual in the W123 series. Workwise I also drove the W124 230E for many years and I now own two : a mint W123 230E automatic for weekends and a E230 W210 as my daily driver. We really enjoy the brand very much.

      ThePianotuner1 thsnk you. Yes, you got a point about getting older 😉. I never liked the looks of the W123, and my impression was, that it was slow. Because the owners drove mostly very slow on B-Roads. In the mean time on the motorway you saw the fast other Mercedes models, like the S-Class. But I still do not like the looks of it, but although it has more than 80 PS less and although it is 12 years older than the W124 Convertible, I felt it more agile. But I prefer the looks and the outdoor feeling of the convertibke.
