Sorry to point out but you missed a scene where the lightsaber is ignited. Sorry to point that out but interesting fact that not even the creators or vfx artists at the time making the scene that they missed a spot where vader's lightsaber prop blade was shown and not have the vfx added as he walked down the stairs. You can see it if you walk it around 2:18. I just wanted to point that out!
@ I will say that the recolouring in this is amazing but the lack of the music which was one of the best parts of it and the fact that the fast parts look like a sped up 1920s film roll completely ruins it for me
if the purpose of fixing something is to remove its problems and improve on it then wouldn’t removing the soundtrack and making it look comically sped up ruin it? Don’t be a wuss and be offended by an opinion on something you didn’t make
Well the lightsaber colors are more brighten a more saturation, I like it but I like how the film is more slower, even Vader take it slow because he is no Jedi, he's just a boy, but one or two elements here and there are quite good
@@scottdatplanetsaveno, it don't. Though I like some of it, especially that part with final exchange is speed up too much. It would not go with William's music too.
@@scottbraun2457 This chain of comments here sums up my feelings on it. Plus, the only way you can modernize the glows is by erasing the original entirely and doing it again. Pasting another glow layer on top of the existing one just over-exposes the whole thing. The cores get chunky and the clipping of the hue is more severe.
One more thing, Luke. Never, NEVER throw your lightsaber away when facing a Sith Lord. Help you it can. Lightning from the emperor will hurt. Saber's stop it.
It was the lightsaber that embodied Luke's aggression and symbolized the Emperor's ability to seduce the light side to the dark. Luke force grabs the lightsaber with his gloved, artificial hand, but throws away the lightsaber with his left, organic hand.
One thing that really stood out to me was the symbolism when Luke looks at his prosthetic hand and then they cut to Darth Vader's severed prosthetic arm. It showed that at that moment, Luke had become a little more like Vader and had the potential to become calloused like Vader was.
You did an amazing job, the only qualm I have is that you omitted a Jedi's Fury. Which makes sense because it showcases the new SFX and it wouldn't have matched up with the increased speed of the fight, but that is my favorite musical piece of the whole saga. Still giving it a big like.
I was assigned to do the wiring for a disco ball in the throne room when this went down. Palps forgot I was there and I saw the whole thing, without music of course. Really brings me back.
I wish you could have included John William's score for this scene. Watching it without really showcases the heavy lifting it does and how much it adds to the film!
You left in the shadow of Vader's prop saber. Without the music it's like the ANH finale without the music where you can only hear footsteps and Peter's shouting in the end... 😆
Very cool. I actually tried something similar recently marginally speeding up sections of the duel, and I think it works very well for the first half. In the second half where Luke is going berserk and the swinging is kinda wild the increased speed looks slightly goofy, so I’m not quite sure what to do about that. I’m kinda hoping that at some point someone will give this scene the “sc38 reimagined” treatment and there will be some appropriate clips to edit in
Thanks for fixing Luke’s blade. I always thought it looked too fuzzy in the actual movie and not enough like the traditional blade look. But nothing else needed fixing. The updated sounds are kinda cool but not necessary.
It's interesting seeing it without the music. Makes it more like Empire. The lack of music in the ESB duel really highlighted the seriousness of the situation, how much was at risk. This duel in its original form always felt too comfortable, as if Luke was only going through a formality. The music in the last part made sense though and the original speed was spot on. Great work here!
No offense to the effort but the OT lightsaber effects work better with pre-2012 prequel and original effects. Whoever was in charge of remaking the sound effect beyond that point made it sound like sandpaper rather than a brush or a fine, continuous broom we grew our hearing attached to.
1:19 there should be a lightsaber igniting sound FX there. 1:45 I do like the slight speed up (could have been goofy if too fast, but I could see it maybe a touch slower, but overall I like the effect).. I also notice Vader breathing heavier and faster.. nice touch on that. 2:52 I always felt that, speed up or not, maybe there should be a bass sound FX and show sparks coming off of Vader's chest panel, along with a crushing sound to indicate Luke was crushing Vader's chest, not just flailing his lightsaber against Vader's... maybe even show pieces of equipment pelting Vader akin to what Vader did to Luke on Bespin. I always hated how, at 3:02, Vader just "takes a knee" and let's Luke win. There has to be a way to edit this to get rid of Prowse just handing (heh heh.. "hand) the victory to Luke.
*_OBJECTION, YOUR HONOR!!!_* The witness has clearly manipulated the footage and audio so it's too fast and we don't get the awesome music the official movie scene gave us.
I really don't understand why people try and fix something that is perfect. It sounds like they are fighting in the kitchen. Why would I want to listen to people stomping their feet and out of place sounds replacing ones done by industry experts. Just because its so easy these days to do vfx and sfx doesn't mean everyone is an expert.
This makes me long for the glory days of "Real Star Wars". If only the sequels could have been filmed decades sooner, with the original cast, and with no "Woke" political agenda! Just pure epic story telling!
The later part of this scene works so much better with John Williams' music left intact. Unlike previous battles, this one is about Luke trying to redeem his father, not destroy him.
2:53 - 2:58 was a bit too fast for my taste. Reducing the playback speed to 0.75 hit that sweet spot where it looked like they had weight behind their swings/parrys similar to the Maul vs Obi-wan duel in Phantom Menace.
The more I’ve watched this scene over the years the more I hate it…Vader seemed to be so weak… he got kicked down the stairs so easily and couldn’t even land on his feet…as he walked back up the stairs it looked liked his knees were hurting… the battle choreography was terrible…Vader fell down practically by himself before Luke went ballistic and cut his arm off… I get it though.. I know Vader did not truly want to kill Luke but I just never really liked this scene; even with it being sped up it’s not as good as it should have been but I still appreciate it for what it is.
The only thing I was hoping to see from this that I didn’t was fixing the orientation of Vader’s lightsaber at 2:10. I know it would be tedious work but considering you’re already remastering everything else, might as well give the 0.5s scene a shot and make the lightsaber hilt oriented the correct way. Other than that, great work
Well nice work though, i can hear lighsaber's sounds from episode 2 , but the lack of soundtrack and speed up are ruining whole scene . Anyway much respect for your work! Ps how amazingly for 80's Vader's voice effects sounds , it's definitely not just James Earl Jones (rip) original voice.Much better than nowadays neuro networks!
The speed should have remained as it was (feels very slightly faster) but overall this is top tier. My argument regarding the apeed for what its worth is this is just as much a battle of emotion as it is technique. I feel like they should be going to slower cause they are really laying it in. The father trying to drown his sorrow and the son figuring out his.
"Take your father's place at my side." Right... you just sold out your lifelong homie and now you think I'm gonna fall for your dumb shit too?! Dude is THE worst salesman.
I much prefer the old school clashing impact and clattering sounds than these new I describe them as muffled and toned down. The original saber clash sounds add depth to the scene and so did the background music playing.
Looks absolutely stunning, the sound quality for me is top-notch. I have to agree with others, speeding parts up didn't work for me, they were too noticeable and took away from the natural physical emotion of the duel. Overall? Stellar work, grade A.
The first accelerated segment at 0:38 felt pretty good but that second one at about 2:53 felt a bit too fast. It was much easier to tell it was on fast forward; didn't look quite as natural as the earlier exchange.
Yes, correcting the rotoscoping mess that even the “Special Edition” treatment couldn’t fix, the melding of the red and green lightsabers where they lost their individuality and just looked messy. Making each blade look the way they should was great but the sped up part you could’ve left alone.
The faster pace is cool. What about the lightsaber shadows cast on the floor like broomsticks? Surprisingly, they were not addressed in the Special Edition.
once vader brought up turning lukes sister to the dark side he was pissed, the rage flowed very powerfully and it almost consumed him to kill his own father.

Without the music it definitely loses a lot.
