- If your fridge or freezer is in need of a new gasket, well you’re going to want to watch this super helpful and super easy to do tutorial on how to fix a refrigerator door seal. The team at Habitat for Humanity ReStore were kind enough to let Lou demonstrate how to do this project in their showroom.

Before you can replace the refrigerator or freezer door gasket, you need to determine what model number appliance you have. This can be found inside the door of the unit.
Once you have that info, you can either contact the manufacturer or do some research on-line to order the replacement gasket. Keep in mind, the gasket could be pricey depending on the make/model so do your homework on different parts suppliers to get the best bang for your buck.
With new gasket in-hand, simply pull out the old and insert the new gasket by hand directly into the channel that runs along all sides of the door. Be sure it’s a snug fit as a loose gasket can cause your appliance to run unnecessarily to offset any leakage.
And what do you know… you fixed it in 15:00.

refridgerator door gasket
The best way to tell if the gasket is the issue, is to close the door with some force. What should happen is a vacuum seal, making the door difficult to open immediately after closing.
If your freezer door easily opens right after closing, here is what i suggest. Using a medium scour sponge, clean along the side of the gasket that touches the fridge. Also clean the fridge along where the gasket connects. Clean inside the gasket, food debris has a tendency to slip in there. If cleaning doesnt work, inspect the gasket for rips. Another common issue is the gasket will begin to sag along the bottom. If this turns out to be the issue, and you are a normal person who doesnt have $200 for a fridge gasket, what i suggest is simply removing it and flipping it over. This way the sag down is now at the top with gravity pulling it the other way.
*IMPORTANT* When inserting the gasket back into the freezer door, ensure that your corners are lined up correctly. The offset corner will pull the gasket in one area, preventing it from sealing properly.
I hope this helps someone!
Great suggestion
Thanks mate, this was much more informative. He should have called it "How to replace the seal", you did what he described in his title, "how to fix it".
@@woodenswordsword118 ive made it my lifes work to fix the unhelpful information on the internet. Glad i could be of service!
I am an older lady with no help around the home. THANK YOU so much for letting me know this is something I can do without being out-talked by a repairman looking for a big job. That isn't much of a job at all.
Great to have these dad videos around. Even when I’m 48 they are absolutely priceless. Thank you 🙏🏻
Knew that the thingy around the refrigerator door wasn't sticking, but didn't know it was called a gasket. Thank you for assisting me with purchasing a new rubber thingy and then installing it! Awesome! Thank you!
I don't consider myself to be much of a dummy (at all) i figured this is pretty much how it worked but mine didn't want to just pull out and I wasn't going to force it. With this video, made it a little more confident that maybe just need a tug. Straight to the point, no bloat garbage in the video. Very very much appreciative. I know this is a couple years old but very much would like to thank you for the simple video.
I found this clip quite informative. I removed the old seal easily after watching & thoroughly cleaned the original seal then refitted & to my surprise it now seals really well
, thanks for the information.
Good to know. I’m trying that first!
I have my fridge Ave freezer both set to the coldest and it’s right at the max temperature it should be to keep food cold/frozen. Hopefully this works.
Bud, you are blessing to a lot of people.
Thank you for a short, sweet, to the point demo.
One of the very best on YT!
👍
Great video, I was able to press the strip back around into the Grove. Perfect repair, millions times thanks.
This is replacing, not fixing.
You have no idea how much this helps. My family and I cannot afford to get a new fridge. So yea this helps alot!
The information in the video is not wrong, but the title is wrong. You're not fixing the seal, you're replacing it.
Replacing it is technically fixing it
Semantics. Is replacing it is the fix, it goes either way.
Just like
my mom
Oohhhhhhhh
Thanks captain obvious
@@jimgillion6453thanks! This is what I was looking for.
I like turtles
Glue the old one back in if it’s in good shape. Hold with large tape until glued.
What kind of glue?
Excellent. My gasket was out of the ridge on the bottom making it not close properly. Also twisted the screws in more so the fridge panel was closer connected to the fridge door.
Our house is a habit for humanity and I'm changing my refrigerator door seal today... Crazy what videos pops up when you look up dyi
I did mine just as you showed. Very easy, simple and straight forward. really pleased with it and thank you.
Excellent! I've just replaced my fridge door seal on Candy/ Hoover fridge and your video was just what I needed.
Yours is the shortest and the best information I've found when searching for a fix for this thank you
Thank you for such a detailed introduction, it is very useful to us
Seems easy enough. Thank you tons!!
GOOD GOT DAMN JOB JOHNNY YOU HAVE SAVED MY LIFE WITH THIS
Thank you for your video!! I learned something new today
Thank you so much, this video helped heaps. You earned a sub.
Great video! I didn't realise it was so simple. Now to do mine....
Enjoy the $200 gasket.
Omg mine is sealing properly now.. thank you! ❤
You replaced it?
Lou, you are the BEST! Thank you!
Thankyou
The title should be "How to REPLACE a refrigerator door seal". Good video, but I was looking for information on fixing my seal.
Thank you very much! I get ideas how to clean it, that’s easy than I thought!
Thank you, this vid literally helped me right now 🙏
This is the Will Ferrell of appliance repair.
Thank You
Wow looking so easy
Thank you for this video 😊
Thanks for letting me know it doesn’t require glue, I thought I had to glue it back together
Yo I feel like everyone I know always thought it required glue or something more difficult than just popping it back in with your hands lol. edit: even me
Some do require glue. Shown here is but one way a seal is attached.
True however my issue is that the door keeps letting the gasket come loose from the groove and this is even with a brand new gasket, I am to the point I need to find some kind of adhesive to use to make it stick into the groove.
So did the adhesive work?
Waoooh amazing its that simple.and easy to fix
This is what I need
Thank u so much sir.
My freezer door gasket has a few hairline cracks in it that's causing some ice buildup every single day that I have to fry off with my fingernails. I really don't want to have to replace the whole gasket just because of that. Isn't there some kind of gasket repair patch kit or food grade silicone I can use to repair the cracks on the gasket?
Very good
Thank you so much!
Awesome save me $50 just by revealing the the door
Thanks exact fridge that I have! yay
I bought a brand new GE/Hotpoint replacement lower door seal (WR24X10229) for my GE model GTH17DBC2RWW fridge which looks like it may be the same as in the video. The old damaged seal came off as indicated in the video however putting on the new seal was a fight to the death requiring all the strength my 70 year old arthritic hands could apply. This was not like the ease of installation as shown in the video. If I had to try this again I think I would apply a little silicone grease to the seal where it mates with the tracks on the door which hold the seal once it presses in fully. Any thoughts?
I ordered a seal that's 1/8" too wide and too long. Will it still fit? I can't find the right size anywhere.
Did I understand you to say to get the refrigerator's make and model number in order to purchase a new gasket at either a refrigerator parts store or on line, which you said will likely cost upward of $200? As w/ any repair, compare the cost to repair vs replace, then make a decision as to what best makes sense for you!
$200 for a gasket seems extremely high to me, especially for a refrigerator than most likely has aged quite significantly!
I purchased a used Kenmore side by side when I remodeled my home about 12 years ago for $300. The gasket appears to prevent the doors from always shutting completely as often times when I go to the fridge, the doors are slightly cracked open!
However, it still performs quite well...only maintenance required is to periodically clean all the debris that collects underneath where the fan and refrigeration tubes are located!
Considering this scenario...any suggestions?
No. He said to be careful, because some can cost that much, but it's important to shop around and $30 is normal/common.
@@PeterLawton In written print while he is speaking about the gasket possibly costing upwards of $200 it says "You can find gaskets for as little as $30 depending on the type of unit you have"...guess the point is to shop around for the best price!
I just got new gaskets for my fridge/freezer and it was only $130ish including shipping, so definitely look around on different sites for the best deal and double or triple check it's for your model fridge/freezer
What about using a heat gun to form the seal back into shape ?
I have a big old freezer I just picked up for 200$
Internal lines are rusted so really not sure how long it'll last and not looking to put 200$ more on it !
But it sure would be nice to put that seal back into shape.
My problem is the gasket itself doesn't stay inside the door. Can't seem to find any advice on that one.
I got the right gasket for my model, but it’s just like a cm too long and a cm too wide. What should I do?
Sir that’s the freezer. Is is the same for the refrigerator?
Wow! Thanks!
I got a brand new refrigerator and an upright freezer. The freezer portion of both of them doesn't seal right, and I have ice build up. Quite frustrating for new appliances
What a guy.
Lucky I double checked that it was just the frost built up in the top freezer that was stopping the door from sealing shut.
I can't find the part for my refrigerator :( . it's only 12 or 15 years old. Is there any hope for me?
I thought we can FIXING the old magnetic rubber to be like a new one 😂
This isn't "Fixing it" it's "Replacing it"
What if mine is off track?
I have a brand new fridge but the magnet is so weak the freezer door opens when you close the fridge door
Do you know where is best place to shop for gasket? I checked and it's pricey.😢
I have A new 2yrs Kithen Aid model kbfn 506ess02,,s/n ka2202613 and my problem is it doesnt stay close, is there a magnetic surface, and what do I have to do. thanks
$200? our 7 cu ft samsung fridge cost us $230 here in asia in 2011 brand new. 12 years later the seal has now failed. the other samsung bought a year earlier failed 5½ years later. got repaired multiple times including replacing the motor and finally failed early this year. ironically the seal was never replaced and we're not sure if that was the problem.
How To change rubber seel deep freezer Dawlanc
You don't always have to buy a new seal I'm sure they have stuff that will make it stick again without having to buy a whole new seal gasket
mine is already bad as it is, I wonder whether doing this could make it worse 🤷
I just looked mine up before I found this. It’s like $219 for the fridge door (not inc the freezer)
I just bought a freezer, put a towel on edge to prop open until I was going to use and now the seal has a dent in it, will this pop back out???
Did it? :)
The replacement gasket I bought won't stay in the lower part of the refrigerator door ..looks like it's time to glue it
Mine started doing this a year after I purchased it!!! Do I still need to buy a new one- a new seal?
No model number of your own unit, no information regarding warranty on your own unit, and you're trying to get specifics about it? What are you doing?
Awesome, thank you!!
If the seal is not torn, can't you just stick it back into the groove instead of buying a new one?
Mine is glued 😭
this isn't even a fix, wtf. this is a replacement lol
The bottom of my gasket is not in place. Can I glue it back with gorilla glue?
Good luck finding the part
I wonder if magnets lose their strength
The fact that these aren't universal and aren't $5 at most shows companies don't care in the slightest about the environment
Water is wet and fire is hot. I bet it blows your mind about fastners on a vehicle being in standard and metric for no apparent reason
You did not fix anything,, you change parts
for $200 dollars na im just crazy gluing that sht
Most are less ($200 is high -- he said as much): ruclips.net/video/nmKOlZq0MSs/видео.html
Yeah the new seal is not sticking at all what gives?
too bad there was noyoutube or online shopping in 1993. we could've replaced the seal on our white westinghouse fridge 😂
I can't as the door is not closing
Why is it a good deal to buy a used freezer /fridge to only spend upwards of $200 for a new one??
An old one in good working order for $200 is a WAY better investment than a new $200 unit. Even new expensive fridges aren't built to last at all. A couple fixes to keep an older, more robust model running is the way to go.
not really an how to fix but more of a how to install new one
I thought you were going to show me how to fix it without spending so much money
I fixed my wife like this. She doesn't respond to her name anymore.
$200... haha more expensive than the fridge...
This is a how to replace video not a fix video you need to change your title and not clickbait people some people really trying to fix their stuff you know cuz they don't have the money to buy the replacement. Tool
Yes it's click bait for sure
What about those the have the screws. Not that simple at all.
Can’t you just re-magnetise the seals? 🤔
Magnets are only a small part of what's keeping it sealed. They're much bigger than just the pouch for the magnet for a reason.
Not for $200
Oh wow apparently to fix a seal, you just buy a new one.
Fix your fridge in 15 minutes...and $200.
Plz Next video send me my request
Absolutely useless advice. If the seal has lost its magnetism chances are the fridge is a few years old. I was quotes £176 for a pair of seals for my whirlpool fridge freezer. about 4 times the units value. Just sell it and buy a new one!
Just checked they dont make a gasket for my freezer fridge anymore. ? What can i do has small leak in corner of freezer?
Me and my mom had a similar issue when I was a kid, try putting a small blob of Vaseline near the unsealed portion, maybe spread it. It’s a tad messy but it’ll fix it for a little while until you figure out a solution or replace it
@@tylerlowe1321 I found one on e bay. $37 dollars.
Ok so your repair advise is to replace the thing? Can’t these things be fixed at all?
@@jhana9220 Mine is still sitting in the box lol. I need to install it. My fridge is working fine again. I un plugged it for over 24hrs then pulled the gasket out some plugged it back in and working good. I still have a slight leak in the corner but its working fine. I need to change out the gasket since i do have a new one and it does need replaced you can find them on e bay.
This video simplifies the process too much. When you buy a new gasket, it commonly does not come laid out flat but rolled or folded in some fashion. With this, you will need, at some level, to reshape it so that it seals properly. You can reshape the gasket using various methods (e.g. heating with a hair dryer, soaking sections in hot water, etc.). I suggest you view other RUclips videos that provide more comprehensive information on this subject..
Well seems this guy doesn’t know how to fix and reuse things…. I mean like fix the seal with E6000 Walmart glue and clear scotch tape over to hold the repair while drying
😂😂😂
not fixing it involves buying new parts..
