X61s 's fan can be opened by separating copper pipe from the aluminium fan body, the fan can be extracted from the motor itself and 2-3 drops of silicone oil keeps fan quiet for 1 and a half years. Tested, proven.
I mean, how could you not? As a matter of fact, I was thinking of keeping this machine with only 4GBs of RAM until when Void Linux failed to run an xpbs update during installation, that's when I decided to go ahead with the expensive upgrade. 😛
