- "The Tale of Johnny Town-mouse" by Beatrix Potter follows the adventures of two mice: Johnny Town-mouse and Timmy Willy. Johnny grew up in the city, while Timmy is from the country.
This READ ALOUD, read along (video includes easy-to-read text from the book) story by Beatrix Potter teaches tolerance and acceptance of differences. The reader is led to the realization that people (or mice) are indeed different and that is perfectly fine. We do not all need to be copies of each other.
Timmy Willy is a simple mouse. He was born in the country, and is perfectly at home in the country. Quite by accident, he finds himself visiting the city and crossing paths with Johnny Town-mouse.
Johnny Town-mouse is a city-born, city-bred mouse. Upon meeting shy Timmy, he accepts him into his life. Timmy is in awe of all the city grandeur, but quickly discovers that he cannot settle down to fully enjoy all the city luxuries. The bright lights and city noise leave him uncomfortable, and eventually even feeling ill.
Johnny Town-mouse helps Timmy Willy find a way home. In the spring after his adventure in the city, Willy receives a surprise visit from Johnny Town-mouse. Despite all the wonderful experiences Willy has to offer his city friend, Johnny finds he cannot last long in the country. He returns to the city, claiming that the country life is simply too quiet for him.
"The Tale of Johnny Town-mouse" is an excellent story to help children understand and accept that they can be different from their peers without it meaning they are inferior or less important. People are different, and where they belong may differ from person to person.
