Anyone that has experience in the aquarium hobby knows that sponge filters are only great for growout tanks, especially discus since canister filters are nitrate breeding factories unless you’re constantly cleaning them out. Sponge filters are also great for cycling tanks quickly if you have a well seeded sponge. Also great for quarantine tanks. If you’re putting them in your display tank then I’m not too sure what to tell ya. That’s just dumb
If u do the maintenance on the canerster filter system and Aquarium fitter I'm disabled I want some thing simple. . I will try them all. The point he's making use what works for u . every single no Aquarium saltwater or fresh water is different I have 2 salt water Aquarium s they both same water different fitters . The canerster filter system has my 90 gallons beat by far . My 150 gallon aquarium has the canster fitter. My point is both water chem is different so use what fitter work for that application
His point is use filtration system as for your application for that Aquarium that works. My Aquariums are different from your s and his not just because I have salt water same thing same tools find the right tools works for the Aquarium
Sponge fitlers are amazing and I will never use anything else. I got exactly 4 sponge filters 2' apart from each other in a 10', 325g central American cichlid tank (4 fully grown oscars, 5 blood parrots, couple severums, red terror, 2 jack dempseys, etc etc etc.) , literally that's all the filtration I got. Pristine parameters and clear water. I used them all, hang on backs, internal ones, canisters... Once I tried sponges, I never went back. I did save a shitlaod of money by buying 4 sponge filters + air pump with 4 outlets, for the fitlration of my 325g tank. Bout $70 total. And I hide them behind decor like rocks and plants.
I have an aquarium so I can look at the beautiful aquarium not to look at a sponge that has waste all over it….and the noise of a loud pump, thats not acceptable either!
The sponge filtration is great when you have tons of tanks to run. No one wants to buy $100+ canister filter for 100 tanks. Also a centralized filtration is great with black outs, only need 1 plug to a generator to power the whole fishroom. I do agree, I don't like the noise or look of the sponge filter. If money wasn't an issue, I would run only sump filters on all my tanks.
No one said that. Hence why I stated if you have 500+ lol I get it. At the end of the day if you have 3 tanks running sponges is a joke. Stop trying to find a cheap route that only takes more of your time which is far more expensive than 3 $50 filters.
A sponge filter with a powerhead is a good method of adding extra mechanical filtration to a heavily stocked tank. The only other filter method that compares in ability to remove fine particulate matter is a canister filter, and changing media once it get's clogged is a PITA. I find it much easier to remove the sponge filter from the tank and give it a quick rinse. Also, no noise bubbling or air pump noise with a powerhead.
I love the Shark Pro! There is one drawback to them though, smaller Angelfish and other slim body fish can get stuck behind them. With that being said we are planning on adding them most of our smaller and medium sized show tanks, now that our breeding room is growing. Sicce has made my experience so much better, and my life a bit easier with their products so thank you for that :)
Haha liked the nicholas cage impersination😂😂😂 I found eheim airpump and aqua forte v-10 and these pumps are very very quiet airpumps! Like you said there is no money to save if you own 2-3 aquarium but you can save a lot of money and electrical outlets and impellercleaning and suctioncups and of course delicat small fish and schrimps with those spongefilter and that´s the reason i prefer spongefilters! I started out as a tech nerd and used canister and stuff but after about 10 years i fell in love with those natural delicat aquariums where you just can´t put a strong current into and ivé done this for 15 years now and im still into this nature "thing" Thank´s for your vid Jay!!
I have replaced all my sponge filters in my QT systems with Shark Pros. So much better with flow, and mechanical/bio filtering. And the water is crystal clear.
I completely agree! The less ugly equipment in my aquarium the better! I’m actually thinking about getting in line heaters for my canister filter to get that out of the tank as well. I do understand the purpose of spine filters for breeding though.
100% hence why I stated you got 500 tanks or you are breeding I get it. Outside of that they are TRASH. No normal fish keeper is saving ANY money/time running an air pump and a sponge. Misconception. 😉
You've got the wrong type of air pump. I've never heard an air pump that is anywhere near that loud. Now I agree sponge filters shouldn't be in tanks that are meant to be show pieces. They are great for people who have many tanks that are not meant for show, but for breeding, quarantine, grow out, etc. They are just plain much more economical and one large air pump can run an entire room of dozens of tanks.
2 years on and I finally got round to getting one.. I chose the 500 because of the low wattage but I also chose to add on an extra cartridge how sneaky of me Now aren't I sneaky? 😯 Great video .
I've used internals, canisters, sumps, hob, sponge, box and under gravel. And over the past 10 years or so I just stick to sponge, box and under gravel. Hate canisters and sumps, so much so that I gave away the fx6 that came with my 240s. Sealed the holes for the sump on another. Granted they all have their uses, but just not for me. Ill use hob as mechanical filtration on a few. Might try an internal and see if I like them now, but will have to see.
This is a great video and topic I use majority of the marketed filters except box and under gravel filters, I haven't tried those two yet. But I tend to have at least one sponge filter in every tank as a back up in case I lose power, I can hook up battery backups to my sponges and fish will be fine. But I also have 21 tanks, so for me cheaper to have a couple big air pumps that run multiple sponges, I have 2 small fishrooms one in my bedroom and one in my basement. The pumps in my bed room aren't loud. I think investing in the right pumps and pump placement is key for minimum noise. My favorite filter though is the seachem Sicce tidal. I'm changing all my Aquaclears to tidals. Because they are just worth every penny, the reliability of the Sicce pumps and having the pump in the water is my favorite part. They always kick back on if power goes out. But my Aquaclears, if they lose siphon then they don't turn back on. Awesome video
