@Shafeone oh I'm well aware of the hardships. our unit does week long tacticals in the winter time nothing like a forced march in rough terrain after a 5 hour battle. but at the same time as reenactors we do get many luxuries that soldiers didn't have back then and a sense of a romanticized battlefield. we can see the what drew those aristocrats to watch the battle of manassas and have a truer understanding of lee's quote "it is great that war is so terrible else we should grow too fond of it"
at 0.24 seconds, the kid in the back is me!!!!!! the whole thing was like hell, i mean all the noise and smoke.....man i really feel sorry for the many drummer boys that went in with their army.
The cavalry needs to lose the yellow piping and shell jackets. Especially for Fighting with Gen Buford. Majority of cavalry wore sack coats and trousers with no piping. Artillery units have the same problem. That and the fact that I have never seen an authentic Cav group and only three Artillery units with proper drill and uniforms.
There are several reenacting groups in New Jersey. Go to your search engine and type in; Civil war reenacting groups in New Jersey. Then just scrool down until you see a unti taht you like.
That painted a pretty good pic of what civil war combat was like in that last scene. Add some artillery shells and case shot and you've got it for sure. That rebel yell is something else. Can be quite intimidating the first time you hear it in battle. But I like the big deep toned manly "Hurrah" of the yankee solidiers.
The American Civil War is the only War where I feel heartbreak over the losses suffered on both sides. No matter who was right or wrong in the end, no matter if the were Yankees or Rebels, they were all still Americans at the end of the day. There's no glory in a war fought among Brothers.
Jesus! The production value of reenactment videos sure have increased since I was active. That damn 135th Antietam video was a travesty, every farb in the whole damn place was shocased. nothing like a 300 lb Yankee screaming "Holy cow look at all the freaking rebels" LOL still laugh at that. I would love a copy of the entire video from this one though. I wouldn't be embarrased to show this to people!
@gtaisawesome87 i love cannon fire...that thud in you feel in your chest as the earth you stand on shakes. followed by the sweet smell of the clouds of black powder smoke.
Will I wish I was in Dixie hooray hooray In Dixieland I'll take my stand to Live and Die in Dixie oh way oh way oh way down south in Dixie oh way oh way oh way down south in DIXIE!
@RememberApostrophes as impractical as it looks, thats actualy the most effective way to use old breach loaders. their most effective when used all as one combined attack. but yes, if i was on the front ranks, i would shit my pants knowing i would most likely be one of the first to go. the americans used tactics that were considered "guerilla," and wouldent work in a conventional war that the british were used to fighting. but as americas army grew, it went conventional by the end of the war.
ha ha ! a gun enthusiast! I will look out for you on the news. I can just see the headlines now " Today a 21 year old chinese man went back to his school and shot dead the headmaster and 14 children. A self confessed gun enthusiast and latent homosexual he is said to have collected a large arsenal of weapons and pictures of soldiers in sexually compromising positions" Here's Ted with the weather......
Come, all ye sons of freedom, and join our Southern band, We are going to fight the Yankee boys and drive them from our land. Justice is our motto and providence our guide, So jump into the wagon, and we'll all take a ride! Wait for the wagon! The dissolution wagon! The South is the wagon, and we'll all take a ride!
HAHAHAHAH THERES SULLIVAN AND I AT 0:54 !! I'm the one with the knapsack and Richmond gray. Sullivan has the Wheat in his kepi. We came all the way up from Florida to kill us some Yankees.
well first of all you have to be overweight and in your 50s with a lot of money to spend on finery and equipment. then you waddle over the battlefield pretending you are a real man. then you spend the rest of the day filling your face
Did they not know to spread out, Why fight like the Romans did side be side when you don't have to. They even did this in WW1 until the Germans showed them a new way of fighting. Yup the Germans put a stop to this. And modern combat has begun.
because you can't be effective in combat with muzzle loaders without beeing in a tight formation. thats why we almost lost the revolutionary war at first
+ Charles Whit Actually, the generals were still thinking in terms of Napoleonic conflicts and the accompanying tactics. By July, 1863, most troops had rifled muskets , which could easily hit a man at up to 600 yards. A smoothbore with ball could be counted on for maybe 50 yards, or 100 with massed fire. Few leaders, apart from Longstreet, knew that an attacking force needed at least a 6:1 superiority (instead of the accepted 3:1) to carry a position. Add that to the mix of rifled ordnance guns, grape, canister, advanced time fused shells, etc., and it's a wonder that more didn't die. A truly terrible war.
+plooker39 yeah. I think it was the worst time in history for a war like this. I was at this event. saw myself in this video actually lol! definitely the loudest event I've ever been to. are you a reenactor also?
Bryan S. Well there have been some pretty good histories of the "War between the States" written by unbiased historians. Shelby Foote is a good example.
This looks much better made than the 140th reenactment video.
I was there with the 125th Ohio (portraying the 8th Ohio): It was relaxed and dry in camp, but every time we took the field, the rain would start!
I really cant stop watching this video. This is absolutely the best representation of the most ferocious part of Gettysburg I have ever seen!

the roschilds sure loved this war. they made billions of it.
We laid the boys to rest on both sides. It still hurts today.
is it just me or is the sound off by a few seconds?

The first day of the battle the yanks had the upper hand? They fought well but were eventually driven from the field.
Their producing another film just like that for the 150th Battle of Shiloh, which will be attending!!!!!!!
Why did Lee attack in the center?! :(
@AUG351 So, by that logic, if slavery had not existed, there still would have been a war?
@PrinceChaloner
It's a Guidon I think you could just make one
The fucking waste of it all.

More likely to hit something if all soldiers are firing the same way also being in ww1 more accurate rifles were used
+Beerrunner81
Ours is not to wonder why ours is just to do or die.

Boy is this biased!! :(
It always is...whoever wins gets to write history.
