Actually, pink used to be boys' colour not that long ago. It was understood as red - symbol of power and masculinity - mixed with white and softened by this mix, not yet fully grown. My grandma showed me my dad's baptism clothes that were adorned with pink ribbons. There could be no mistake, as she had only sons, no little girls in the house. On the other hand, girls used to receive blue clothes which were symbols that they were supposed to follow Our Lady's example, learn to be like Mary.

This is the most satisfying analysis on the topic I’ve heard to date.
It bridged the gap for me between culture saying “the only difference between the genders is the shape of your crotch” and well meaning but inarticulate Christians who have a subcultural stigma for lumberjack men and handmaiden women. What the culture misses is that incarnation of the spirit element that the brother so eloquently elaborates on, and what I’ve yet to really hear explained to me from the church was there is both a profound mystery and a concrete direction to your gender.
