Ha! That's cool I've actually rode that climb (nearly exactly the same time as Neil but on a lot more training) when in Oz on holiday. Altho that was in the b9 so was starting to struggle, as that was about hill 4 or 5 from memory!
Another great video, thanks Cam and Neill. Great to see the improvement. Never mind the Pedla gear, if the cowboy hat can keep the magpies away where do I order one!!!
That's such a big change I can't imagine it's due to 7 weeks of training. What were the differences in ambient temperature during the tests? What time of day? How long before the tests had Neill eaten? What had he eaten? Did he take on the same fluids/calories during both tests? Any change to bike setup? Wattage on trainer calibrated the same before each test? Not saying base training doesn't work, just that this much of a change after 7 weeks doesn't pass the smell test as being solely from base training.
Most of the improvement in FTP and VO2 would probably be due to the general volume increase in that time as Cam mentioned. Simply riding more than I have in the previous 6-12 months (going from zero volume to some volume) tends to push things up a bit. - Neill
Yes, wondering if the cardiac drift is better with the updated ftp, that is the real test. You would expect less drift if he is no longer riding at 70% of ftp. I'll stay tuned.
@@roadcyclingacademy I think some people here in Qatar did a 24 hour ride of around 600 km around the country and the total elevation for that was around 500 meters. An overpass to cross the motorway is what counts as a hill around here.
What are your thoughts about FTP long and short version for someone that does not have a strong core/base training? I would expect the power drop over the full 1 hour test is greater then the 5% reduction used in the 20 min test based on 20 min average Power X .95. This I believe matters because most training plans uses FTP as the measurement to define zones. So a 1-1.5 hr workout with a false FTP based on the 20 minute test could be harder then one based on the 1 hour test. Thoughts?
I think the one hr test is not practical, it's too daunting and many don't have access to roads to complete it. Max effort for an hour on the trainer is pure death also. I'm also not a big fan of the 20min test for many amateur and recreational cyclists due to the inability to pace it. Thus, the Half Monty becomes a great tool for FTP. At the end of the day, the numbers are rough, but most of the time, there abouts. Then people can start training at FTP, and learn what is feels like. Using progressive overload techniques we can slowly building towards holding their prescribed FTP for longer periods. Cam
It looks really interesting.. How this progam works for Neill and how you (Cam) explains it.. Learning a lot and as a 'new' beginner also a bit useful for me..I am busy training on Zwift not outside due to chemo and radio therapy.. But my goal is to loose the weight i can (114kg i was 90kg because of the medicine the increase and not having much energy).. The target is to ride next year juli/august the Mont Ventoux. To prove to myself i have control over the body.. But i wished i had a programm like Neill's It's a shame we don't have that really in the Netherlands.. So i use the Zwift work-out mode. Also love your cycling projects about the high end bikes.. One question which wheels do you recommend for climming on a Wilier GTR Disc 2021 Astana edition. thank you for the video's and keep up the good work!!!
We wish you all the best with your chemo and radio therapy Terry. And also your training goals, keep up the great work. Not sure about the best wheels for that bike but I am loving my 30mm Caden wheels for climbing!
Nice vid, again getting lots of info across in a short period, clearly, without taking yourself to seriously ... nice
Cheers Chris.
Great stuff. I enjoy seeing these improvement videos.
Nor Cal cycling do a couch to crit series which is of a similar premise.
Great channel Cam. 👍🏻
@Harry HardC ha ha! Some dude called Jeff. Races a bit. 😁

Haha! We need to start selling them
Always an inspiration to watch the improvement of an athlete!; great job Neill 👏👍🏻
Another great video Guys. Love the data. As this doesn't lie.

Great video as always! Hope you guy’s are staying safe out there with all that covid craziness. Come to the states!
Yes, Florida or Sweden looks the goods.

Love seeing segments mentioned that I be done.... I'm 25 seconds behind Neil 🤔. Motivated 😁 (Dixon rd Assent)
haha nice one Byron
Is there a specific workout on systm/sufferfest that can be used for the heart rate fluctuation test?
Cam just gets me to use the Wahoo app, plug in the wattage and just sit there for an hour - Neill
@@roadcyclingacademy yeah I remember seeing a vid now of him doing that very thing. Cheers
"if you don't have climb" as far as I can tell, every road in my area is a climb going up... Great series
You’d be surprised, some people don’t have access to climbs!

@@mathewrose2951 lol thats wild. my usual 60km+ ride can get me around 200m elevation gain
That wasn't Neill on the trainer, it was Davey Sommers, I'm sure of it

@@roadcyclingacademy Thank you very much.. I will keep my eyes on the price:)
Now watching
Cam how have you found and adapted to the 165 cranks considering you do a bit of crit racing
They're fine for crits, I am not a sprinter though
Muscle "memory" is a real thing!
Tru dat
With the cowboy hat, you should entitle Neil’s next video to Brokeback bikefit 🤣
I would just like to point out that Neil's kid does look like him :D, those eyes tho
Cowboy hats on trainers = aero gains
Haha
