  • Rus Snyders let me tag along on his day 2 competition of the ‪@KayakBassFishing‬ National Championship as he fished a tributary of Kentucky Lake. He breaks down several catch, photo, release tournament skills in this banger of a tournament performance that includes a 22 inch river smallmouth.
Rationale for being in the "Top Ten Videos" Playlist:
In terms of quality of edit and videography, this one just came together well to tell a story. The story is an historic win in the sport of competitive kayak fishing. The mechanics of what Rus does in this day two of the 2022 Kayak Bass Fishing National Championship provide someone who is new to the sport a guide for how to do "Catch, Photo, Release" kayak fishing tournaments the right way. The mechanics of his presentations should be inspiring and educational to those who are veterans in the sport. As soon as I finished filming it, before I set down to edit it, I knew that this one would be the video I was proudest of, even though I never made a cast in it's production. Rus's story is always worth telling, and I told it in a way that nobody else could have.

Congrats Russ. Some awesome hardware there. Thanks to Russ and Jeff for the great video. Thanks Russ for the commentary along the way too. Most guys don’t want anybody filming while they fish. A great ambassador for the sport

I tried to hang back and just let him fish. He just started narrating what he was thinking. I don’t believe that Rus is a “talk to himself” kind of guy. It’s the kayak fishing guide in him that automatically slips into teaching mode. We are lucky to have his generous teaching.

Thanks Tony. The most remarkable thing about that day isn’t anything I captured on video. I think that I failed to capture it because I was “staying back” so I wouldn’t be in his way. Here’s what I observed throughout the day, even during the first two hours when he did not have any significant fish on the board: When I could see Rus’s face, he was always smiling. I could see that top row of teeth. Dude is happy. I don’t think that it was a “just that day” sort of thing either. “cheerful” is a fishing skill. It’s directly related to Positive Mental Attitude.

This style format tournament is different. There is no “weigh in” per se. Please watch the video to see how each fish is photographed on a measuring board, and that photo is uploaded to the tournament judges. It is a length based tournament, not a weight based tournament.
