Nel It literally is a period, though. It’s part of the estrous cycle, and it has similar symptoms and discomfort, so it’s not inaccurate or inappropriate to call it a period.

It’s anxiety, not pain. When they are “menstruating” or better said, heat, their biology is telling them that it is time to get pregnant and they do want to mate. They are much more vocal during heat because they are trying to get attention from other dogs who can mate with them. Like a mating call!
When my German shepherd got her first period, she was completely fine, wasn't like this dog at all. She would run around like her usual self but get blood everywhere...

After some arbitrary google searches, it seems like some dogs *might* experience some very mild discomfort or pain, besides just emotional. It wouldn't be the same menstrual pain humans get, but I think he knows that too and it was a translation error, since he was getting hid info from a vet. A female dog will swell and become hypersensitive, so she could feel pain from overstimulation too. It doesn't seem like its common for dogs to be be in pain during their heat, but it seems it is possible. I think he was right when he hypothesized she wasn't used to this sort of pain, and thus it was worse for her.
Our Midwest Journal so for humans we get cramps because the uterus is contracting to get rid of the accumulated endometrial lining. Dogs uterus’ do not collect this lining so they don’t suffer through cramps like women do. We seem to be the unluckiest when it comes to periods and period pain 😩 the passage of blood for dogs is just cells that come along with hormones that they release (which is why they have increased urination to leave their “scent” for males). Anyhow, I think maybe the most pain or discomfort dogs might feel is from their vulva being so swollen. Also, if anyone has a dog in heat I know the bleeding gets everywhere and it’s kind of gross and annoying so if you do choose to put a diaper on the dog make sure to change it often because they can get major UTI’s from them not being to lick their blood off so that bacteria can make it’s way into their tract.

Dogs don’t actually feel pain or period cramps since they don’t shed their uterine lining like humans do unless they get pregnant! So your dog is not in any pain during its period theyre probably in heat :)

I really do start to wonder...if someone’s child and your dog fell into a river and were both about to go over the waterfall and you could only choose one to save, which one would you choose? To me a dogs life is no where comparable or equal to a humans. Though I am kind to dogs and would never purposely torture or mistreat a dog, I would value a child’s life more than my my dogs life.

Abigail Chaiyasate I’ve had the same thing before, though I’m not sure if it’s normal nor am I saying the same thing will happen to you but as periods passed by I started to experience more pain and mood swings so I’d be aware of that just in case, not certain that you would experience the same since everyone is different :))
That's because the dog is not in pain. She just REALLY wants to get pregnant because her body is telling her that everything in her is ready for puppies.

Claudia • Your friend doesn't need to be a vet, then. Cats are basically in a constant heat cycle which is why they can get pregnant at basically any time. Also, female cats generally don't want to mate so the males force themselves onto them (and male cats have barbed penises).

I always wondered how they jump on trampolines and be that happy while their body is literally leaking. I can barely even sleep for a week personally. I used to never get cramps and after my son(2nd born) now i get cramps often some times a week or 2 before the leaking even begins

@@gints2766 if you're going to try and spread information do some research before spreading what you believe to be correct. Dogs have heats aka an estrus cycle. Not a menstrual cycle. A female dog will bleed at the very beginning of a heat but its not due to her ovulating, its due to the swelling her body has. Most mammals reabsorb the blood and eggs in the uterus rather than discharging them.

@@black_forest_ we arent fertile at the time of menstration so women arent typically horny during that time(although I notice I am right before and as its about to end) the strongest sense of arrousal comes around the time of ovulation which is a week or 2 after your period ends. The need for emotional comfort is probbaly because of the pain/discomfort...we want someone to comfort us in that time. Dogs are fertile during heat, humans arent fertile during menstration.

My boyfriend's aunt and uncle have a Great Dane and she wasn't bothered by her cycle either, if anything she appeared to be more active. It was also extremely messy, the would try to put something on her to absorb it and it would take her all of 10 seconds to remove and destroy whatever they used.

They look for males to mate with. As some comments had mentioned, it was actually her heat, which had same symptoms to human menstruation. But while human menstruation was time to lay off the sex, dogs heat was the time they craved for sex. I think it was also the only time females actually got into the mood to mate although they technically could also mate at other time (I'm not sure, though)

I guess its different for everyone. I feel nauseous trying to eat anything while I'm on my period. So I eat very little and mainly stick to teas and soups. It sucks.
I think she was bothering him because she wanted him to mate with her. When my dog was in heat, she ran away from home and didn’t come back till she was pregnant. She gave birth to four dogs. Two of them were the same breed but different colors, and the other two were different breeds. We had a male dog but he was too young for her 🤷♀️

Abigail Chaiyasate I’ve had the same thing before, though I’m not sure if it’s normal nor am I saying the same thing will happen to you but as periods passed by I started to experience more pain and mood swings so I’d be aware of that just in case, not certain that you would experience the same since everyone is different :))
That's because the dog is not in pain. She just REALLY wants to get pregnant because her body is telling her that everything in her is ready for puppies.
So, those 'twitches' are possibly cramps. They're internal stabbing pains that can be felt in your abdomen, back and hips

Moca Chii according to my friend which happened to be a vet, yes cats get periods too. But usually the blood amount is so little that the blood disappear because they groom (lick) it before drops into the floor.
Claudia • Your friend doesn't need to be a vet, then. Cats are basically in a constant heat cycle which is why they can get pregnant at basically any time. Also, female cats generally don't want to mate so the males force themselves onto them (and male cats have barbed penises).

I always wondered how they jump on trampolines and be that happy while their body is literally leaking. I can barely even sleep for a week personally. I used to never get cramps and after my son(2nd born) now i get cramps often some times a week or 2 before the leaking even begins

Dogs have heats aka an estrus cycle. Not a menstrual cycle. A female dog will bleed at the very beginning of a heat but its not due to her ovulating, its due to the swelling her body has. Most mammals reabsorb the blood and eggs in the uterus rather than discharging them.

@@black_forest_ we arent fertile at the time of menstration so women arent typically horny during that time(although I notice I am right before and as its about to end) the strongest sense of arrousal comes around the time of ovulation which is a week or 2 after your period ends. The need for emotional comfort is probbaly because of the pain/discomfort...we want someone to comfort us in that time. Dogs are fertile during heat, humans arent fertile during menstration.

My boyfriend's aunt and uncle have a Great Dane and she wasn't bothered by her cycle either, if anything she appeared to be more active. It was also extremely messy, the would try to put something on her to absorb it and it would take her all of 10 seconds to remove and destroy whatever they used.

As some comments had mentioned, it was actually her heat, which had same symptoms to human menstruation. But while human menstruation was time to lay off the sex, dogs heat was the time they craved for sex. I think it was also the only time females actually got into the mood to mate although they technically could also mate at other time (I'm not sure, though)

I think she was bothering him because she wanted him to mate with her. When my dog was in heat, she ran away from home and didn’t come back till she was pregnant. She gave birth to four dogs. Two of them were the same breed but different colors, and the other two were different breeds. We had a male dog but he was too young for her 🤷♀️
