- For Unreported World, Guillermo Galdos follows Brazilian Federal Police cracking down on illegal mining in protected indigenous regions, and the network of companies dealing in the precious metal.
Brazil exports a hundred tonnes of gold a year and evidence is emerging that suggests almost half of Brazil’s gold trade comes from an illegal source.
But according to police documents obtained by the investigative journalism agency Repórter Brasil, Brazilian Federal Police, have accused a major international gold trader of buying millions of dollars of gold from a Brazilian company they suspect of sourcing its gold from the protected Kayapo indigenous territory.
Unreported World gained exclusive access to the federal police team leading that investigation, which could have implications for big tech companies using gold in their products.
Galdos also travels to the Kayapo indigenous territory to investigate the impact of gold mining on their community. Despite the money being made by mining bosses, most who do the actual mining are also impoverished. Galdos encounters illegal miners who say they’ve been mining for 30 years but earn just enough money to survive. Their work is wet and dirty, and a world away from what many would associate with gold. They wade through muddy water mixed with toxic mercury which increases their risk of kidney failure and serious neurological problems. Meanwhile local villages struggle to contend with increasing levels of disease, and a poisoned food supply.

Thank you for y'all's hardwork.
Imagine being the 1 guy caught when the police didn't even make it to the mine. He should've ran
They where essentially in the middle of a rainforest! If he rain there was a high chance of him getting lost or killed. He probably felt his chances with the police where better then in nature
Kind of ridiculous this video only had 5.4 k views.
Good job guys./gals.
Will you return when the police are able to make it to the mines? Sadly, this did not show the connection to the large companies conclusively. Yes, it mentioned Apple, but can you continue to show the trail from Amazon to Apple? Is this just part one? I hope there is more. It is worth sharing if the whole process from illegal mining to it entering our phones etc. How is gold in my phone again? Thank you for doing the real stories deserving investigation!
He basically explained it, the illegal gold goes to a legit gold company and pays them essentially blood money to get a certificate that the illegal gold is from a legal mining operation (it's not). Then they use that certificate to sell to 3rd parties who think its coming from a trusted source.
MONEY TALKS

The Police guy sounds Dutch, I wonder how he ended up there
All the cops shown in the video are definitely brazilians. They speak good english because they are well educated, they are also Federal Police, which is harder to get in.
Dutch who speaks Portuguese with a clear regional accent? Clearly he is Brazilian, the problem for those of you outside of Brazil is that you think there are only indigenous people and black people living in Brazil. When in fact almost half of the population here is white, mainly in the southeast and south...
This has ended prematurely
The same happens with Carnauba wax!! Everybody in the world has inside in your phone.
And what other phone and tech companies acquire illegal gold?
All of them. And many other minerals, such as copper and cobalt. You may have heard of the slaves in Congo digging cobalt with their bare hands. And this is then used in our tech, especially electric vehicles but all others too. If you have a mobile phone, you can be pretty sure the cobalt in it was mined by a slave worker, even a child, in Congo. Very much illegal and all the companies deny that their products use this cobalt, but if you dig deeper, the sad and terrifying truth is very apparent; all of the companies use a variety of materials dug up by modern day slaves while the environments in those countries is being ruthlessly wrecked and very little is done about it. It's simply too profitable.
South American Countries Still Rich With There Mineral Resources✌️But Bad Leadership Is Main Issue For middle-class & Poor People's They Can't Help There Own Country People Which is very Bad😢These Countries Should Give Them Opportunities👍Love And Respect For South American Latin Countries ✌️❤️Love And Respect From Doha Qatar 🇶🇦 ✌️
Leadership is a facade, who leader our countries are the bussiness and rich families. A cover up democracy. In mine our president want to recover the lithium mining rights for us, but the richest who have bussiness with the foreing actual owners have treats with them and of course don't want to so things are getting bitter

Please mine more gold, mr. digger so I can buy my next phone cheaper. TIA
Thanks for the added sarcasm 👍🏽
@@PegsFlamingoville I don't think that they're being sarcastic. I think they are saying it for real and support illegal mining if they get a benefit from it. That's how the Black Market exists, by consumers who consciously support it.
