l'm curious to see Johnathan's thoughts on Lars and the Real Girl (2007). I am convinced that he is on the autism spectrum as opposed to having schizoid personality disorder, or any psychotic disorder. My reasoning is he clearly wants relationships with others, but something is giving him social anxiety and de-incentivizing it more than the implied incentives of having relationships are incentivizing it.
I'm so proud of Cinema Therapy for all their awesome content and how far they've come that they can have a big name celebrity guest! and I really appreciate David being able to come and share his story

@@CinemaTherapyShowgot a question for you guys is there a way you can do a video about Attack on Titan Eren Yeager cuz I'm curious what your inside is on about him
This is the first time I heard of David Dastmalchian despite having seen him in Ant-Man and its sequel already for so many times. And I am glad to be formally and officially introduced to his name, his achievements and his journey in this video.
Hearing David Dastmalchian talk about his personal trauma, addiction, and mental health was amazing. It was wonderful he was so candid in this. I hope you have him on in the future to talk with him more just to hear his stories. This was one of the best episodes so far.
So this is kinda meta, david, idk if you’ll ever see this or any of the cinema therapy guys will see this but david was in a movie about my grandmother. Hulu’s Boston Strangler is about Loretta McLaughlin the incredible reporter who not only was just a general badass journalist covering some of the most important topics but one of the women covering the Boston strangler case in the 60s. Loretta is my grandmother, I got to go to the premiere, meet Matt ruskin and Keira Knightly and everything. David if you ever see this, thank you for helping to bring a piece of my grandma back and showing the world how badass she was, even as playing a serial killer.
I never actually realized that Dark Knight was David’s first film role because when I saw that movie, I recognized David from some Wendy’s commercial. Ever since then, I’ve always been excited to see him because I always know he’s going to be doing something great. Having him on the show did not disappoint in the least! Please bring him on again
"BABAYAGA!" was easily the best scene in the movie. Also his role in The Suicide Squad, while often played for laughs was still filled with moments where you can see his misery, pain, and discomfort with his condition. I remember the scene where he gets up in the middle of the night, bloated and sweaty, and he looks up and makes eye contact with one of his companions and his eyes are filled with this sadness and just exhaustion as he drags himself up and goes to the bushes to purge the dots from his system. It was a moment where I had such empathy for him.
I really appreciate David’s vulnerability in this interview. Being vulnerable in this way is really the key to encouraging others to seek mental health. It’s never enough to simply say “get therapy.” This man is a talent and has a good heart to open up like this with the intent to reach others.
I remember seeing David in the Dark Knight when it first came out, and immediately going to IMDB and asking myself "Why hasn't this guy been in more stuff?" like 5 minutes on screen in Heath Ledger's best role, and all I could think was "This David guy is going somewhere"
David is like Kate Blanchett and Gary Oldman... You know their face so well but within 10 seconds of seeing their new character, you forget it's them and that they've been in all these other films you love bc they just BECOME. 💚💚💚 cannot wait for the next half of this interview!!
This guy is a personal hero of mine. He was able to turn childhood trauma and struggles into something genuinely positive in a healthy and constructive way, and that's something I, as someone with serious mental health issues, aspire to do. He draws upon those bad experiences, but doesn't feed them, and thats really awesome to see. I'm always excited to see when David is in something new. I hope the writer/actor strikes gets resolved in a favorable manner for them, because i really wanna see david do more ^-^
I've loved him as an actor as I've seen him in so many things. He's awesome. It's so great that he can speak to the things he's had to deal with. The way he speaks about the trauma and situations are similar to some of the things that I have also had to deal with. It's so great that he's getting and advocating getting help needed to deal with this kind of stuff. He's a hero to me for that.
Something I LOVE about this channel is that trauma responses aren't seen as cringe or shameful. I just love that people understand and a lot of people aren't angry and hateful or put off by that. It's so validating to see successful people who have moved past that and see it for what it is.
I cannot believe that you were able to talk with him! David Dastmalchian is such a great actor and it's awesome to finally see him talk about his personal experience in performing these roles. I also think his voice acting should be recognized too in animated movies like The Long Halloween as Calendar Man and, recently, The Doom that Came to Gotham. I've enjoyed him in every role since I first saw him in Any-Man and it's amazing seeing him be open about his life and career! PLEASE bring him on again to talk about everything else from Dune to The Suicide Squad to Oppenheimer.
I have been a fan of David Dastmalchian since The Dark Knight. Today, I rediscovered him as a vulnerable and deep individual. Looking forward to seeing him in the next episode of Cinema Therapy. You guys are truly amazing!
You cannot play that level of insane in a film without having personal experience with mental health issues. I'm so sorry for what David has gone thru but I'm proud of him for turning it into something beautiful and meaningful to the rest of humanity.
david seems like such a wonderful person with such depth and layering to his character that he can also portray in roles, he's truly an underrated actor.

I think you could say that David is at the front of the pack of the new generation of our best character actors. He's always so compelling, and he's just great in everything. We've kinda gotten past the "prime character actor" stage for guys like Giamatti and Buscemi and JK Simmons and actors like that, but I think David is absolutely picking up that torch and running with it. He's arguably the best in the new generation of kinda weird, quirky, a little different performances. So looking forward to what comes next for him and I think he's absolutely good enough to eventually get a couple Oscar nominations. He's just such a compelling actor.
omg, no waaaay. you got david dastmalchian, THE DAVID DASTMALCHIAN on your show 😭😭😭❤ y'all have NO idea how much this man meant for little 8y/o me. he and heath ledger were one of the reasons why i became so interested in theater and acting. we all know how impressive heath was as the joker, but david made my heart beat in excitement.i was in such awe that i wanted to become just like him! (obv the actor part, not the actual character 😂) often i even skipped forward to or replayed the scene in 5:03 just to see his performance again and again and again 🤭 now that i know more about and did some acting myself, i understand just why i was so impressed. david has such a huge talent in conveying multi-layered complicated feelings. he is one of the few actors i can actually differentiate between the actor and character and the character still feeling very real and organic/natural even tho some of his roles were definitely inspired by his own life. many big sceen actors feel like they're just playing themselves but in different settings. i'm not saying they're bad actors, they're actually really fcking great, but david dastmalchian just never feels like that whenever he's acting. or at least not for me. sometimes i wish i became famous, not bc i actually want to, but my god it's one of my biggest wishes to act beside him in something and tell him personally how much he changed my perspective of acting and how much he means to me. who knows, maybe if the whole studying education thing doesn't work out, i'll pick up acting again 🤭
What a complicated, profound performer. Not only is he an amazing dramatic actor, the fact that he improvised those lines in Ant-Man is proof of his comedic skills as well. I’m so glad he’s been able to overcome trauma. It was a pleasure getting to know him and his story. Thank you, Cinema Therapy.
It's crazy how many big movies he's been in but he's just now getting recognition for his talent. I just saw him in Late Night With The Devil, his first leading role I believe, and he is definitely a capable leading man. He's going to be nominated for an Oscar in the next 5 years. I firmly believe it.
Wow, I had no idea that David had such a difficult life! It's really great that hes reached a place where he can talk comfortably about his struggles and also make some amazing art ☺️ I shall enjoy his performances even more now! I'm a big fan of actors who can act with just their eyes, so I'm glad he took that director's note on board 😁
David is one of those actors I am always excited to see in a film. I remember noticing him in the show Gotham and instantly recognizing him from The Dark Knight. He was basically a Joker acolyte in Gotham, too, and he was so fantastic even if it was just for two episodes. While looking up his filmography after that I saw an interview with him talking about when he was living out of his car and struggling before getting the part on The Dark Knight. He is such a talented actor and his story is so inspiring. Thank you for this episode.
I'm so impressed. This is by far better than 99.9% of tv interviews with big budgets. This actor is truly an actor. He's so wise to approach it with a mental health lens and not use acting as sole therapy. Gotta be the healthiest moviestar out there. How perfect for Cinema Therapy? I wish he was a reacurring guest. Thank you for the trigger warning, those help me. Thank you as well for being a source of comfort as I try to get help. I love this space. Such positive masculinity with healthy relationships warms my heart.
I just recently saw Oppenheimer with my dad and when we were driving home talking about the film and how well certain actors did, I brought up David. My dad doesn’t watch Marvel movies so I was trying to explain how huge of a range David has. This video proved me right but also made me realize how many more films I need to hunt down and watch! 😅 I’m eager to see what else comes from this very talented mind in the future.
Oh my gosh---I love love LOVE David Dastmalchian so much! He has so much range as an actor and any role he plays is automatically amazing because of the depth he brings to it. I know you guys don't do TV shows, but my favorite role of his will always be the first role I ever saw him in: Murdock on the new Macgyver reboot. He just had such a CHILLING presence in literally every seen. I also really appreciated him sharing his story and opening up; I didn't know those things about him before, but I love him even more for it now. So glad he was on the show!
I dont know if its because he's super dedicated to his job but he always look so handsome, I think when people are doing what they were born to do and do it passionately they look like the most beautiful creatures
That was amazing. So cool that you got Mr. Dastmalchian on the show. His acting skills are on point, being able to build up the tension in scenes like in Prisoners but also being super fun to watch in Antman🤯👏
I just saw The Last Voyage of the Demeter and he was fantastic in it. The whole time I was wondering who he was, because I've seen in here in there so many times, but he was never the big marquee name for any of the films I saw. But he has such a memorable face that I guess he's subconsciously lived rent free in my psyche all this time lol. He seems like such a sincere and gentle soul and it was really wonderful hearing him talk about his process and his insight into his own struggles. I'll definitely remember him now~
As a training counsellor, I knew I had to work on me first, so I can be at a level to start helping others in their personal journeys. Been a massive fan of David's since The Dark Knight, and so glad to see where his career, and his life journey, has taken him so far
It was really cool that David was call back to play Jerome Valeska's main worshipper in Gotham, it was like a nod to his small role in The Dark Knight, love it
I am so bad with actor names so whenever I saw David Dastmalchian act, I just assumed he was an A lister I never heard of. I mean, his acting is phenomenal!
I just rewatched The Dark Knight last night. David has such an unforgettable face! I also like him in Prisoners, Dune, and The Suicide Squad. Watching him in action is such a 180 to listening to him talk though! He plays such intense characters, yet he's such a normal person
Words cannot describe how much I love this channel I will continue to recommend it to people. As always great job cinema therapy team for creating such amazing content. ❤❤❤ David is such a gloriously talented actor, thank you for sitting down with him❤❤❤
This interview is fantastic! Mr. Dastmalchian is such a legend in the horror community, which is my favorite genre. What a spectacular episode. Thank you for a great show.
by the last name, i’m assuming he’s armenian. and i find it amazing that you guys commented on and noticed the use of his eyes in his acting cuz i’ve always said, the way i can tell someone is armenian descent besides a name, is through the eyes. idk what it is but no matter what % of armenian you are, we all have the same look in our eyes. i think it’s from the generations of trauma our culture has gone through and he definitely works it in his acting
Ok this is awesome. I loved his character in Flash, The Suicide Squad, and even Dark Knight. And the fact that he’s an addict with years of recovery is awesome.
Every once in a while you see an actor who's simply amazing from the start. I had no idea that the Dark Knight was his first movie but I remember his acting as if it was tattooed in my heart. I've loved him in every other movie I've seen him since... Thank you for this!
I was a special events server in Burbank a few years back and David was a guest at one of the events. It was a small room with about 12 people. A lot of the other people there ignored me and my coworkers, which feels awkward in such a small space, but David was so kind and treated us the same way he treated guests at the event. I didn't know who he was until afterward. Everyone kept referring to him as the Ant-man guy. It's so cool seeing how all around of a good guy he is. To be so vulnerable and open with what he has struggled with because he hopes it will speak to someone else. What a cool dude.
You guys continue to amaze me. I feel that you voice what fans want to ask people who work in the film industry. I hope more will recognize what you are doing.
He’s probable one of the most under-the-radar and underrated actors of our generation. It was a pleasure to also see he seems like a wonderful and healthy person as well. ❤️
David is beautifully open & candid about his experience with mental health problems & is extremely well spoken in his understanding & knowledge of mental disorders. What an absolute treasure of a human. Really looking forward to a Part 2 in future covering Polka Dot Man & possibly even Abra Cadabra on The Flash, it'd be nice to explore how he approaches more confident characters
Phenomenal interview! David is fascinating, and interestingly fit right into the CT dynamic, he seemed like he naturally belonged there, which not every guest does. Really excited to see the new 'Psychology of an Actor', so much to explore there. Beautiful discussion, looking forward to seeing David come back someday for Part 2! 🥰🎉
I appreciate the fact that OSDD and/or DID (or something very easily mistaken as that) is discussed here in such a clear and compassionate way. Thank you.
Just watched him in the Dracula flick Demeter. Really enjoy seeing him pop up and glad he’s getting a lot of roles. Just sorta discovered this channel and really broke down on the “Up” review. Lost my dad a bit back and it really hit hard. You guys bring up a lot of interesting points and can still bring the laughs.
Took a bit to finally watch this but as always excellent. David is consistently a compelling character actor and seems to a wonderful person. Keep up the great work David and we will keep watching. I also want an honorable mention for his part as Murdoch in MacGyver. He was the only person that truly earned and honored that part from the original series. His episodes were the only ones I enjoyed.
Kudos to David for doing the interview, and for you guys supporting the writers and actors. Love his work ever since Murdoch from the new MacGyver (I actually missed him from Dark Knight)
This was fascinating! Thank you, David Dastmalchian, for talking about your movies, your process, your history. You do incredible work. Never realized The Dark Knight was his first role, 'way to come out swinging' indeed. Thomas Schiff really stuck with me, and I'm glad Nolan + co called him back for that. This was a great interview, can't wait to hear about Polka Do Man, too!
Bro this dude is a legend like been a fan since like Gotham I feel like I’ve seen him in all my favorite shows always super memorable and stands out even in a small scene soo glad he’s gettin his props
This was a real surprise. David is incredible in the little parts he usually plays, it doesn't matter if he has one line or five, he delivers. It's awesome you guys got him to participate on the show and I hope he comes back to keep sharing. :)
Wow, you don't really know a person's story until you listen to them talk about it in front of you. This is a door opener for future guest actors to talk about their experiences.
"Prisoners" is one of those movies I watched once, and I've been toying with the idea of rewatching it, but it's just too...everything for that. Perhaps one day.
I have never clicked on a video so fast! Thank you so much for making this! David Dastmalchian has inspired me so much with his characters! One of my favorite actors of all time! Hope y'all talk some about his role as Murdoc in MacGyver (2016), it was my introduction to his wonderful acting and I would love to hear the psychology behind a character like Murdoc!
For the little screentime he gets, his character in the dark knight absolutely lit up the scene and he genuinely gave great material for Dent to work off of!
I can't wait for you to bring David back! This was such a fascinating deep dive and I love how open and honest he is about his life experiences. I'm similar with being very open about my mental health and trauma history, my experience with SH addiction, etc so it's refreshing to see that reflected in someone who is in the public eye and, thus, hopefully can break down the stigma more about discussing these things openly.
I recently saw David in Voyage of the Demeter (he was admittedly the best part of that film) but he too fascinates me because of the fact that he has the most interesting look more than any other actor i've seen, you don't get that a lot in cinema. His face almost looks like a sad painting
It’s SO cool to see you guys doing episodes with a celebrity!! I’ve seen almost all of Davids roles, he’s truly exceptional at playing characters who you can totally tell are very mentally disturbed without saying a word. I think my favorite was his role in Prisoners; chilling.
I don’t know if you guys will ever see this but I really love your videos, the way you approach each story and character with such care and depth, it’s so good! I’ve just been catching up on some Psychology of a Hero videos, and I really think since the new Guardians that Rocket would be an amazing contender for this series - also so would Bucky Barnes, I think his journey is just amazing up until now, especially Falcon and the Winter Soldier!
This was an absolute delight definitely have David Dastmalchian back to discuss more of his roles !! I love him in the Antman films he's so funny with the whole "baba yaga" 😂
That was very interesting, great professional actor with his own personal story of healing. My addiction was stress, working hard and success and i can very much relate to the healing-work he has done and is doing. Thanks for sharing ❤

Mr. David Dastmalchian you are the pride of my Kansas City
David Dastmalchian is one of the most amazing character actors in existence today! I love his work.
We’re hopeful that we can do it more. It’s really meaningful for us too! Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
@@CinemaTherapyShow Thank you, this means a lot to me!
Growing up I was so scared of David! Later in life I realized this was absolutely outstanding acting skills. What a treat guys! Thank you!
Love you guys, loved David. His openess and charm are undeniable. Please have him bak.
We planned to, just waiting for the strike to resolve. David was such a great guest!
What a GREAT get! Dastmalchian is a freekin' superb actor!
David is one of my favorite actors and human beings. I would love to just give him a hug one day
David is a highly underrated actor.
That was amazing. So cool that you got Mr. Dastmalchian on the show. His acting skills are on point, being able to build up the tension in scenes like in Prisoners but also being super fun to watch in Antman🤯👏
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
❤❤❤ David is such a gloriously talented actor, thank you for sitting down with him❤❤❤
Thank you for watching and sharing our channel. It means a lot! ❤️
This interview is fantastic! Mr. Dastmalchian is such a legend in the horror community, which is my favorite genre. What a spectacular episode. Thank you for a great show.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
by the last name, i’m assuming he’s armenian. and i find it amazing that you guys commented on and noticed the use of his eyes in his acting cuz i’ve always said, the way i can tell someone is armenian descent besides a name, is through the eyes. idk what it is but no matter what % of armenian you are, we all have the same look in our eyes. i think it’s from the generations of trauma our culture has gone through and he definitely works it in his acting
Thanks so much!
Thanks so much! We were so happy with our conversation with David and we look forward to more interesting discussions.
I appreciate the fact that OSDD and/or DID (or something very easily mistaken as that) is discussed here in such a clear and compassionate way. Thank you.
I want to see a super-produced movie with him as a lead. Love love this actor.
Such an underrated talent, absolute gem. Amazing video!!
Couldn't agree more about David! Thanks for watching!
I need this man to play Franz Kafka in an autobiography. He can do it. I’m confident. THE MATERIAL IS THERE! THE VISION IS SOOO CLEAR
Between the new format, the respect for the strikes, and the guest, the nerdy joy is strong with this one 😍😍😍😍😍
Kudos to David for doing the interview, and for you guys supporting the writers and actors. Love his work ever since Murdoch from the new MacGyver (I actually missed him from Dark Knight)
omg did you see how cute david looked at the end when they were praising him he’s so adorable 🥰 i swear i’ve never seen him blush before
Literally one of the best actors alive. Super underrated. Bridges the MCU/DC universe. David deserves SOOOO much love.
I’ve never seen David in an interview format and I’m so freaking excited rn!!!
He has THE perfect character actor face. Just super interesting to look at - great on camera.
Bro this dude is a legend like been a fan since like Gotham I feel like I’ve seen him in all my favorite shows always super memorable and stands out even in a small scene soo glad he’s gettin his props
What a damn good actor and a genuinely likeable guy. He should definitely be invited a second time
This was a real surprise.
He's not my favorite actor but by god I can recognize him in every role he's in and he never disappoints.
Agreed - David is awesome and really gives his all to any role he gets given
I can't wait for you to bring David back!
Absolutely enchanting in Prisoners thats the role i associate with him the most
David brings so much to his roles. He has a gift for sure!
Such a great episode... I'm blown away by the backstory he created for Kurt.
I love that I always leave a cinema-therapy video with tears in my eyes and a big goofy grin

@@CinemaTherapyShow 😊
I recently saw David in Voyage of the Demeter (he was admittedly the best part of that film) but he too fascinates me because of the fact that he has the most interesting look more than any other actor i've seen, you don't get that a lot in cinema. His face almost looks like a sad painting
It’s SO cool to see you guys doing episodes with a celebrity!! I’ve seen almost all of Davids roles, he’s truly exceptional at playing characters who you can totally tell are very mentally disturbed without saying a word. I think my favorite was his role in Prisoners; chilling.
It's SO cool for us too! Glad you enjoyed it!
I absolutely love David Dastmalchian!
Whenever I see him in something, I just know he's going to be a scene stealer.
Thanks for watching!
OMG, I watched The Suicide Squad literally the NIGHT BEFORE I found this and never enjoyed a Cinema Therapy episode so much. Thank you, David!
Also, loved that you finished the episode on the scene in the club where PDM sees EVERYONE as his mom. 😆
