With Ally's surgery far in the rearview mirror, her recovery has come a long way! And that means that finally we're coming back to life! Randomland Adventures is coming back! And just as we're getting ready ... a freak storm AND the assembly of the custom Tiki planter project!

Hey Justin, good job on the planter. Remember any wood that comes into contact with water and dirt will rot. Treat the wood with water resistant stain to extend the life of the wood.
Put some mclockeys man o war on there. It will last years longer

Love your garden projects Justin!! I’m a huge gardener and love making garden art too.
A suggestion for your wood planters. Make sure you clear coat seal the whole piece. I usually use Krylon or the Walmart equivalent brand of waterproof clear coat spray. I seal with at least 3-4 coats. Not just wood projects but also figures and statues to keep there color, and protect from the weather. It is faster than the roll/paint on version.
Also line that planter! I have multiple wood planters that I line. Then they will not rot much overtime then.
Thin and flexible pond liner does work well. They are generally non toxic. Use big staples to attach it around. Smooth as you go. If you look up re-upholstery, use that technic ;).Do this all the way around the inside and the wood bottom section. Keep the center open for ground contact.
An alternative to this is putting a big crate inside of this planter and only clear coat the inside and out instead.
Either way, this planter will last for a few decades this way :).

Ahhhh I’m so happy Ally is making amazing progress, I struggle with hyperthyroidism, IBS, and other GI issues so I can definitely understand the struggle of keeping up with day to day especially after surgery. You both are such troopers and thanks to great men like you and my hubby are why we don’t feel alone but also able to feel independent. Wishing You both the very best! Good to see you both coming around again back to yourselves ✨
Ally looks so good! She looks tired, but you can tell she's so much happier and in less pain and less stressed out.
Officially adding this little tiki build to my project list! It never even occurred to me that they could be made out of regular pieces of wood planks like that. Oh the possibilities! And glad to see Ally on the mend and able to do more things!

I'm so glad that your Ally is doing so well, and was able to get out and spend some time with you on Valentine's Day! I could only imagine how it must feel to be feeling better and wanting to do things for yourself. Something's you can do, others you want to do, but not quite yet.
I am so happy that you had awesome friends & family come in and help you both out. Weather it big or small gestures everything helps! Not knowing you, I prayed. I prayed for you & Ally, the medical staff, friends & family on surgery day. I prayed for her recovery & for you, knowing it must have been hard to see her like that & still praying that the rest of her recovery goes as the doctors want it! Prayer is so powerful!!!
That storm was quite something, I loved it! Watched from my window, in my recliner...made hot chocolate! I'm glad you got your planter finished right in time, it looks awesome!!!

Wow that planter is SERIOUSLY a masterpiece. You are a talented man Justin.
Send the rain to the Mid-west, we've only gotten two snowfalls this year, usually were worried about the snow flooding the Missouri River and surrounding fields come spring, but now were worried if the soil won't be wet enough come spring for the crops.
It's great to see Ally doing so well.
You might want to line that planter box with some heavy plastic to protect the wood from rotting. Nice job on the carving.

I'm so glad to see Ally up and about! I can see her getting better and better each day. 👍 Awesome project, Justin. It would be way more "Randomland"-like if you had kept the wood different colors. Lol. Of course, the burning of the wood is a good way to season it without poly finishes. If you have any vole/mole issues and you want to use your raised beds for food crops, you should add a physical barrier on the bottom. Hardware cloth works well. Its name is deceiving since it's not really "cloth". It's basically chicken wire on steroids. Lol.
You did an amazing job on the Tiki posts, keep up the good work. Glad to see Ally is on the mend. You guys are awesome. Best of luck, you two.
Blessings to beautiful health... Our daughter spent several months at OHSU with similar conditions and we're proud save today she's completely healthy ❤... future surgeries may be necessary to continue the further development organ functions. Best wishes to your family always

Those carvings aren't So-So, they are pretty damn awesome, and something like old boat rope would work well on the planter if it's needed.

Oh, you might want to check into deck screws, they are a little more outside friendly than regular wood screws.
Random woodworking. I fully understand your process. I've used it myself in the past. The planter will look nice for many years to come and apparently that was the point. Good to see Ally looking well again.

Justin, your planter turned out awesome and looks great with your theming. I would recommend lining the backside with a black thick-mil plastic to keep water/dirt from contacting the wood, seeping through the cracks, etc. You can simply staple-gun it to the wood, and don't do the bottom so you've got drainage. Also great that Ally is doing well too. HAIL the tiki carvings!

Nice to see you both getting back to normal. Ally really looks great considering all she has been through.
Drywall screws will rust and break off, especially in a planter. Also, I would reinforce the corners with wood, those galvanized brackets look good but once you add soil (weight pushing outwards) the only thing holding them are the screw threads which will loosen with wet/dry cycles. It is an amazing piece of art.

I'm Buena Park born and raised, we had some serious rain storms back in the 70s-80s with hail and the streets flooded etc ...I live in Missouri now and will say the storms are much more scary here though ...

Btw, you should consider offering some of your tiki stuff at your booth in the antique store. I'm not much in to tiki but the craftsmanship on your pieces is really good and I bet that people who are into tiki would gladly buy some of your work.

Don't stand under a tree during a storm. I hope the hail didn't hurt your cars, it can do a lot of damage. I'm from Indiana and we deal with this quite a bit. Love the planter. Take care ya'll.

Add a liner. Like thick pond liner. Dirt will push out the wood. Watering the dirt will also retain the moisture and rote the wood. Black trash bags will be a cheap alternative. Staple it to the wood 👍

That was a pretty cool (or cold) thunderstorm that blew through the other evening. Thunder is pretty rare in Anaheim and hail is even more rare.
The Tiki planter is coming along great. What may be cool if you just do 1 hidden tiki figure post of a character or subject you love like an Batman Tiki, Frankenstein tiki or Samurai tiki as an Easter egg.
Justin, just so you know, I was a Disneyland Resort Engineer 10 years of cast member service. Trust me, the only really important part of life is not what you do, but who you love!
Planter pro tip...make a plastic liner or your hard work will rot out faster than you would expect. Some inexpensive vapor barrier would do the trick. Protect the sides and let water drain out of the bottom.
Be sure to seal the back of the wood so that it does not rot away too fast.
Now if you use a heavy gage trash bag you wont need to dump the vacuum tub just lift out the bag.

Glad to hear you and the fam are doing well. The planter looks great! If you haven't filled it yet, and you haven't looked into it already I recommend you check out a method called Hugelkultur. Basically a better way of filling deep garden beds and might be a bit cheaper if you can find some large stumps and material to fill the bottom before using expensive soil. Just something to think about. Thanks for all the adventures over the years and can't wait to get back to some new ones. Take care.
