Let's have a look: 1 - AlphaZero and the Mastery of Chess 2 - AlphaZero and the French Defense Lesson 3 - AlphaZero and the Synergy Demonstration 4 - AlphaZero and the Deadly Bishop Pair 5 - AlphaZero and the Protected Passed Pawn This makes me super eager for books 6-10
Humans are taught that the goal of chess is to checkmate the enemy king. AlphaZero has taught itself that the goal should really be to checkmate the light-square bishop.
I absolutely love how you commentate these games. As someone who's chess experience is a bunch of games played in homeroom in high school you describe the games in a way that is simultaneously interesting, informative, and easy to follow. Please keep up the great work!
"Soon, all of the white pieces will be attacking the black king. And guess who's not around? This guy; he's garbage!" *Throws black's light-square bishop off the board* This part had me laughing so hard. Such a wonderful analysis of this game and the importance of controlling space.
It's fascinating to me that Stockfish was still rating itself favorable when the light square bishop was trapped and not contributing. I think the people who program it are going to have to seriously reevaluate their algorithms after this series, to appreciate certain positional deficits for what they are.
Well, you have to understand, chess is so complex that to brute force solve it would require more information than the universe is capable of holding. (10^120 positions, 10^80 observable particles.) So you have to use heuristics. And sometimes that leads to valuing material even though it doesn't do anything.
@@AndrewBlechinger no since most of those permutaions are illegal, a larger proportion are nonsensical, and large databases underline openings and endgames so its more likely tactics in the middle game whih is closer to 10^9
Christian Lund Overall, I'd say chess is the most toxic and cruel community I've ever experienced. But there are some pleasant niches, like the comment sections on Jerry's videos for instance.
I think this game out of the 10 demonstrates the most how differently alpha zero plays from a normal engine. Its saying to itself that my position in the future will be good even though its not at the time it sacs the pawn, like a human player it thinks this "must" be good I just dont see it yet.Very much like Go where the player is trying to set up favourable conditions on board.
_"I've no idea if it even has an evaluation function or how it works"_ While Stockfish do brute force search, AlphaZero skips irrelevant moves and focus on those moves which looks promising, like a human would do.
That just means that humans are not playing correctly. If you read the Encyclopedia of Chess Middlegames (ECM), temporary imbalances in material due to a trapped piece occur all the time. It's like a power-play in hockey. Most humans just lack the technique to pull it off on the level of an AlphaZero, but that will one day not be the case. A human can recognize the smothered mate instantly. What we're seeing is that the computers understand calculus while the humans have barely solved algebra. That too will change. A human should be able to draw every game and one day will, in part thanks to what the computers are teaching us. I've already resumed my old style of "Tal" like sacrifices that I had assumed Stockfish proved were unsound, but which actually are sound, just above the level of even a 3300-rated machine.
@@ATMOSK1234 we can still train neural network to evaluate their position, even if we don't know how they do so. I am pretty sure AZ has a numerical evaluation since its freely availible concurent, leela chess zero, has one.
I love these Alphazero videos Jerry! Your commentary on them really helps me to understand the thought processes behind each move. Keep up the great work!
Watching the structure slowly shift to favor A0 is crazy. Such a subtle progression, but by move 18 the effects of the pawn structure are brutal. I see that happen to me when I play better players, but usually it's not as radical as this, where black's bishop is completely cut off from play.
AZ has been brutally targeting blacks light square bishop in these games. Typical weakness of alpha beta based engines (SF etc.) is being able to spot pieces that are trapped long term. It's the same type of weakness that makes them bad at properly evaluating fortress positions.
Done with school for the year. Now it's time to finally binge watch the Alpha Zero vs Stockfish games. I'm just going to press the like button before watching.
Thank you Jerry I like how you analyze every detail and answer all of my "what if..." questions. I like that you let the engine run to move 40 to explain the pawn move. Thanks.
Damn I learned something new in chess, so not only did the AI not kill the useless bishop but as if the ai knew it's technically dead and not really there as long as he block those pawns, the bishop just sat there waiting for his appointment all day till it was too late, Gg.

in fact deepmind Alpha Zero lost some games to stockfish. there were 1000 games between them, you can find it on the paper they disponibilized and in some youtube videos covering that subject. :}
Yea they published 100 games but they had many more played. I am assuming they do not want to publish them all because they want to analyze how the AI in each program is learning and adjusting to each other so they can sell that information. It is worth MILLIONS to programmers involved with advanced AI industries.
I wonder if self-learning AI could turn into a problem for chess, in that it'd be more difficult to catch cheaters; if new, better AI make more human-like moves and decisions, it may be more difficult to catch what would previously be obvious engine moves.
You make a good point. It will be more difficult for human players to detect the kind of style indicative of cheating at first glance; however, cheaters on chess websites such as lichess are caught using statistical analysis. Admins look at how often the computer agrees with their moves and simply applies t-tests to reveal cheaters. The kind of machinery used by google's deep mind is too specialized and powerful to be commercially available in the foreseeable future, so it is unlikely that we'll see cheaters using alphazero specifically. But I am excited to see the improvements the stockfish community makes to their engine, even if they continue to use search algorithms and opening books instead of deep neural nets. Exciting times in the world of chess engines.
Indeed, I hope a standard Chess engine prevails over this A0 soon. Even though my guess is that A0-style of AI is superior to the standard Stockfish one in the long run. I hope that a a standard stockfish can beat A0 soon.
Me being me Aren't you just punishing people for good chess, in that case? It basically would become impossible for a real upset to occur in chess, because they must have cheated- and that would take a lot of the fun out of things.
Great video again Jerry. Love to hear you analyzing games, you're the best. They must renamed AlphaZero the "Bishops Killer", once again he was so good at neutralizing those :-)
The "bad bishop" is a well known concept that doesn't require a computer to exploit. Many human players have played sacrifices like the one AZ played but not with this level of technique.
pls make more videos on super computer matches.... Its really instructive.... The way of looking at chess is changed after seeing the games of alpha zero.... Thank u so much for the videos.... Really improve my game
At 8:25 (black to move) what's wrong with pawn f5 forking the knight and queen? White could capture on f6 with either the pawn (en passant) or the knight (checking the king). Either way after the exchanges the queen and the rook (black) would form a nice battery on an uncontested half-open f file.
At 8:41 the commentator suggests Qc7 as an option for black, but it seems to me that white will punish that with Nxe6! After fxe6 Qxe6+ follows, and then the white queen takes the bishop on e7, thus winning a pawn
My plan as black at move 14 (7:23) would have been Qc7, Nd7, at some point long castles, and maybe actually c5. No danger on the kingside anymore, all targets are gone
11:30 what if instead of Qd8 we have Ra3 (not a2, a3) threatening to take that bishop. If the bishop moves to say b2 Rb3 or even c3. If bishop to e4 the rook can take that bishop (on c3) and if the queen is taken the rook falls with check and the bishop is picked up afterwards with a dangerous past pawn. (winning a net piece) If after Re3 something like Be1 (now Be4 is a legitimate threat) Qb3 seems like a good idea with a future of moves like Qb2 and c3. It's a lot more active play from black to be sure.
Quick question at 11:02 Why wouldn't white just push Bishop to h7? Bishop h7, Black King takes, White Queen takes f7, if the rook comes out to defend the black-tile bishop, then either queen could take the pawn or the rook could push to the a-file and work from there... I assume there's a reason but can someone point it out?
14:06 I would exchange queens and sac my e pawn by advancing it. This would activate my light squared bishop. It's still losing at this level because you're down a pawn, but it's better to sacrifice a pawn and get a minor piece into the game. F6 pawn doesn't pose a major threat anytime soon with the queens off.
I would be curious to hear you thoughts on the stockfish suggestions shown on the right. Sometimes they differ from what stockfish in the game does but also the moves are not discussed by you as bad moves. E.G. at 11:30 it suggest Ra3, with a depth of 27.
I dunno why, but i was first scared at how good Alpha0 is at chess and at go, something like this with its ways of playing, to me is very intimidating just thinking of playing against, how can you best something that is already 12 moves ahead of your current move variation. But now i realize that this is an opportunity to learn from something as smart as it! Alpha Zero's strategy: "Let's play chess, but *I* decide where the pawns are."
Quick question at 11:02
Why wouldn't white just push Bishop to h7?
Bishop h7, Black King takes, White Queen takes f7, if the rook comes out to defend the black-tile bishop, then either queen could take the pawn or the rook could push to the a-file and work from there... I assume there's a reason but can someone point it out?
