Veronica, And yet another fantastic video. The narrow gauge railroad looked fun, and the 1,000 feet of tunnel also was cool looking. Who would have thought there were so many neat places in California.
Thanks for sharing that fun memory! I took my friends from London there in the early 90s and it was their favorite part of their California visit. We sat on the hillside - in my old red convertible Mustang - after the ghost town closed at sunset and watched an awesome lightning storm in the distance. They couldn't stop talking about it.
My Dad and his Brother bought a little piece of Land in the Mojave Desert in the 1950's. We used to go there a couple times a year and search through the desert for "odds and ends". Found really interesting stuff from the 1800's out in "middle of nowhere". Us kids always looked forward to Visiting Calico Ghost Town for lunch and a Sasparilla! It's cool when you are 7 or 8 years old to do stuff with Dad and Uncles. Fond Memories of Calico Ghost Town!
For them it was probably the quintessential American experience! It would be like us having tea time with Big Ben in the background and then meeting a member of the royal family. Your friends were lucky to have had such a good memory from their visit!
Thanks Tim! The railroad was definitely a highlight, and it was so interesting to see part of the actual mining tunnels. Many more fun destinations to come! Take care! Veronica
Yes, Bodie is up north off the 395 near Mammoth Lakes. We plan on visiting this summer for a video. It's a much more authentic experience and I can't wait to go!
Bodie is very cool! We hope to make it up there for a video. Calico is very accessible, so it makes a nice day trip. Hope you have fun. Your son will love the gold panning, train and mines. Take care, Veronica
Thanks SwtPea64! Yes, the mining tunnels are really neatl. It's interesting that they maintain a steady temperature of around 60-65 degrees, which made them a comfortable place to work in the scorching desert heat. Thanks again, and have a super weekend! Veronica
Hi cullyvan. I agree about Bodie - and can't wait to shoot a video there! Another interesting ghost town is at Randsburg off Highway 395. At Calico, a fire destroyed much of the ghost town, but five buildings were saved, which now include the Park Office, Lane's General Store, and Lil's Saloon, Zenda Mining Company building. Many of the mines are also still intact, though too dangerous to enter. But it is a real ghost town!
Hi there! The ATM is over by the coffee shop. They used to have really cool cowboy shoot-outs here on the streets, but unfortunately some guests complained about the noise and they did away with it. Too bad. They do have many fun events, including Calico Days which is coming up Oct. 9-11 with stagecoach rides, an Old West encampment, Old Miners Triathlon and other attractions.
I love this video! I went for my 17th birthday years ago as I commented before. I went a few months ago. It was different than I remember but still great! I mean its been 10 years since I first went so I forgot. :p I love this video!! Awesome!!
i love ghost towns:) i've been here and Tombstone, AZ. I used to live in Ft.Irwin, CA and Sierra Vista, AZ. Another really cool place to visit in Arizona is Bisbee, AZ.
i like stopping there everytime on my way to vegas from la.it has a ghostly feeling to it .i have been there when everything is closed and it feels weird and lonely.but cool.
I grew up in California, lived her my whole life, and love to travel. I like to share my travels with other people, hopefully helping them out with tips and information about the destinations. Before doing this, I was a travel writer and editor, so it comes naturally for me. Hope you enjoy the videos!
@Heatfire12 Yes! Walter Knott worked here as a child, then bought the Ghost Town. When he started Knott's Berry Farm, he brought many artifacts from here to form the Ghost Town portion of the theme park. It's actually our next video, so stay tuned! :)
I see your point... But it is supposed to be haunted. And it was once a thriving silver mining district, so though it's not abandoned, it is technically a ghost town. Hope to make it up to Bodie soon....
Only 5 of the original buildings remain because there was a fire that burned down most of the town. Interesting question about the other ghost towns. A few others in California are Bodie, Randsburg, Rhyolite near Death Valley. Thanks for commenting! Veronica
@Guardians555 A ghost town refers to a deserted mining town. Even though it is being toured by visitors, it is still a "ghost town" because it is no longer inhabited as a real city.
The sub-titles are hilarious! If they are not supposed to be hilarious I would get rid of them. I once lived nearby. The bottle house was moved there after I left. It used to be several miles away.
@julietmustdie4 They aren't supposed to be scary. A ghost town is simply a former boom town (usually from the Gold Rush) that no longer has a community of residents. There must be surviving original buildings. Calico is all of these things, but it just happens to be run by the park system. Coloma, our latest video, was where the Gold Rush started. It is also a ghost town of sorts, even though it is run by the park system.
Unfortunately if it's not maintained in some way, vandals quickly will destroy it. I'll be doing a video on Bodie Ghost Town this summer; it's considered one of the best.
@TheRiverRioGrande OK everyone. According to Wikipedia: In mining and excavation, a glory hole is an informal term for a large and impressive excavation open to the surface.
calico is pretty cool, but for a real adventure one should take a look at the other ghosttowns just minutes away by 4wheelers. like hanson, the borax works down the canyon behind calico, or whats left of the huge commerical mining operations down wall street canyon.
Veronica,

Thank you, Stephanie! Sounds like a fun birthday! We wish you many more happy ones! Glad you enjoyed the video! Veronica

Veronica, the town looks so incredible!
This have somekind of calming effect to me..

I've been there twice since I'm in the high desert its very lovely.
Looks like a fun day.
Looks like Super Fun!
memorable to me as this is the first time i've been to a mining place.
The Ballad of Calico was a great album about this town by Kenny Rogers and the 1st Edition. Great album!!
Yes, it's cool! Bodie Ghost Town is really popular too, up off the 395.
Nice tips. Thank you!
When I went there was this house that was at angle. It was cool since you stood on angle without falling.
I love this video! I went for my 17th birthday years ago as I commented before. I went a few months ago. It was different than I remember but still great! I mean its been 10 years since I first went so I forgot. :p I love this video!! Awesome!!
I remember camping there all the time as a kid.
i used to go there when i was little! had sooo much fun :)

Hi, thanks for your comment. Actually nobody lives there, but it is a tourist attraction. Check it out sometime. Pretty cool!
I agree. It's not to be missed!
@FoxPlant2006 Yes, the Knott family purchased the actual ghost town as well a long time ago. Now it is run by the park system.
i love ghost towns:) i've been here and Tombstone, AZ. I used to live in Ft.Irwin, CA and Sierra Vista, AZ. Another really cool place to visit in Arizona is Bisbee, AZ.
Nice video thanks for sharing

That was actually filmed in Barstow and Victorville, right nearby! I actually was on the set...
@Heatfire12 Yes! Walter Knott worked here as a child, then bought the Ghost Town. When he started Knott's Berry Farm, he brought many artifacts from here to form the Ghost Town portion of the theme park. It's actually our next video, so stay tuned! :)
Yeah, it's a neat little place. :)
Nice Video. I visited Calico August 2006.
I see your point... But it is supposed to be haunted. And it was once a thriving silver mining district, so though it's not abandoned, it is technically a ghost town. Hope to make it up to Bodie soon....

@woodyratsdog Camping sounds fun. We'll have to try that when the weather cools off this fall. :)
@Guardians555 A ghost town refers to a deserted mining town. Even though it is being toured by visitors, it is still a "ghost town" because it is no longer inhabited as a real city.
I dont watch california travel tips but I have this marked on google earth.I decided to look it up on youtube and found this.
I've been here a couple of times. It's a cool place to stop at, if your going by it.
really, from dusk till dawn was filmed in Victorville?! I lived in Victorville for 7 years and never knew this. Lived in Spring Valley Lake.
I just realized 3arch did a good job with making the Lucy lane phantoms, look exactly like Lucy Lane
@wildcat2114 It depends on the day. There are certain weekends that it gets really crowded, especially Father's Day, Mother's Day, etc.
@hotdoggy854 Yes. They filmed it at the old A-shaped cafe off I-15. Think it's a Mexican place now. Other scenes were filmed around the area as well.
Its was a great town and old to see..
I had a great time there in 1981.
The sub-titles are hilarious! If they are not supposed to be hilarious I would get rid of them.
I once lived nearby. The bottle house was moved there after I left. It used to be several miles away.
Ha! The running joke around our house. Why didn't I notice that when I said it?
@GeorgeVreelandHill You're welcome! Hope you have a good time!
@assortedfish They'll be having their Calico Haunt coming up soon!
man this is place when i wanna visit.
@SpartanHaloGuy Thanks. It's on our list. Snowed out right now though...
@superchickrocs1 Yes, I point out the four original buildings in the video....Thanks for sharing.
@superchickrocs1 Actually, many of the original buildings are right there in the town. You must be thinking of the mines?
@kingmaxim187 Interesting. Where is this at?
i went there last week it was soooooooooo funn! (: yall shuld go.
@julietmustdie4 They aren't supposed to be scary. A ghost town is simply a former boom town (usually from the Gold Rush) that no longer has a community of residents. was this the ghost town that was used in Charmed when the girls' father wants to buy it but Phoebe sees a ghost fight and gets shot?
@CaliforniaTravelTips really, from dusk till dawn was filmed in Victorville?! I lived in Victorville for 7 years and never knew that.
@2indulgent For something like this, check out Cerro Gordo near Lone Pine and Death Valley. It is very remote and rarely visited!
@Tavarith Thanks!
I never bothered checking out the tunnel, didn't know it was a 1000 feet long!
Yes, it supposed to be haunted by Calico's first school teacher, Margaret Oliver, and former resident Lucy Lane.
I went yesterday it was cool
Makes me think of the zombies map buried in black ops 2
Unfortunately if it's not maintained in some way, vandals quickly will destroy it. I'll be doing a video on Bodie Ghost Town this summer; it's considered one of the best.
@TheRiverRioGrande OK everyone. According to Wikipedia: In mining and excavation, a glory hole is an informal term for a large and impressive excavation open to the surface.
Is this still open? We're going to California next year.
Yes, I just took my son 2 days ago. And its super cheap! $8 per person and kids are free. Its really a good time. I highly recommend it!
Awesome and thanks for the info
@19steph83 Thank you Stephanie! :)
Has any BO2 gamer realised this is NOT a gaming video
@Forston22
lol I know!!! This is Veronica's husband Jason, and I told her people were going to comment and laugh at "glory hole"!
Walter Knott? as in the moved Ghost town in Knotts Berry farm?
calico is pretty cool, but for a real adventure one should take a look at the other ghosttowns just minutes away by 4wheelers. like hanson, the borax works down the canyon behind calico, or whats left of the huge commerical mining operations down wall street canyon.
@LegoSofaStudios What are you talking about? Haven't seen any comments about that.
How it that? I've never been.
yea rocking in that chair is lucy lanes favorite chair
BO2 FTW!!
Black Ops 2 FTW!!
Where is leroy ?
Now I know why my husband was laughing at me when I said that. I had no clue what "the other meaning" was. Ah well, it's good for a laugh.
