So sorry about your brewing mishap, Martin. This stuff inevitably happens. I really admire how you handled it. I so enjoy watching your videos and am really enjoying the current format that includes an additional something extra to the usual type video. In my opinion, you have the most enjoyable BrewTube channel to watch. Thanks for the videos and keep up the great work. Cheers!
I am just now finding this channel after hearing about the recent partnership with Brulosophy. These are great shorts and very entertaining and informative. Blows my mind that through many of the first 4 or 5 batches, and especially this one, you are barefooted! I will assume flip flops are a hazard on a wet floor? great work, Cheers
I myself is a homebrewer about 30 batches in. I really enjoy this series and have learned sooooo much from you. Getting my first keg this week (Goodbye Bottles!!!) and about to buy a fridge so I can experiment with fermentation in lower temps. Much love to you and know that I really appreciate the content!
Thanks again Martin, I have now done the same thing for grain storage and copied your setup to the letter almost. The cost savings is the main reason I did it but it is very cool too. Keep up the great work.
During college finals, I forgot my wine experiment. When the bottle burst, it threw the toaster across the room. no time to clean up, was in finals. Then had to move to new University, my mom was pissed after she volunteered to clean my apartment after I left! Sticky sticky EVERYWHERE :P nice vid
Smart ideas for the containers from the dollar store. Good thing you didn't get burn. You may need a better support system overhead to prevent the mash bucket splashing in and maybe lower your table too.
Martin, as always a joy to watch your videos and brewing creations. Sorry for the mishap. Not sure you should be using an electric brewery while bare footed. Cheers!
I have 3 bulk grains and some misc 1 pound bags I keep in a container but I think I am going to track down a dozen of those containers. I always having to go buy a handful of ounces of this and that. Now I just need to get a list of grains to fill those. Oats, Wheat, Cara-pils, Crystal malts, Chocolate, Rye, Black malt....should be a fun project.
@@TheHomebrewChallenge What I'll probably do is the next handful of batches just buy 4# of specialty grain until I have all that will cover it. Slower to build a collection but whatever.
True vlogs! It happens but we always somehow just keep brewing.... worst thing Iv done so far was drop 6.5 gal of NEIPA called it “no more glass carboys” Cheers
Martin - thanks for the tip regarding dollar store containers! Since I emailed you a couple of weeks ago, I picked up the very same containers for my setup, and they are working out wonderfully! Sorry about the spillage mishap! Had a hose flip out of the kettle with similar mayhem and cleanup - not fun...
Really enjoying the videos Martin, but it would be nice to put the "extra" things that you look at (for example, grain storage in this episode) in the title of the video! I went searching for your discussion about cooling wort the other day and it took longer than it should have :)
I poured wort all over the garage floor recently while transferring, no matter how many times i washed it, i still found a sticky patch for weeks! I was wondering if you shouldn't have adjusted the hop rate, based on having less volume in the kettle, but it didn't sound like it was too bitter.
Loving the channel. I am thinking I may use a still to run tap water through for a 0 base. Currently I have been buying 23 ltr bottles of reverse osmosis water costs $2 Canadian ..........but as I have aquired a still and its legal to own one the hydro cost will have to be compared to see if its worth while....penny pincher lol
Did the same mistake on my second brew day a few months ago that eruption chock wasn't to fun and probably lost at least a gallon of wort in the process haha
@@TheHomebrewChallenge I am ordering various Grainfather kit (I live in the UK) to start brewing myself because I have learned so much from all your videos. Many thanks for them all.
that looked like a difficult cleanup... sticky wort all over everything. But; I'm sure the smell was at least pleasant while you were working to clean it up.
I am old and tired. I prefer the vittles vaults that stand upright. Getting grain out of the vaults that lay down must be a bit like emptying the dryer (which I can barely do). Sorry about the wort mishap. That's why I wear a long shirt and pants and full height boots...
@@TheHomebrewChallenge BTW Love the series. very informative and great editing. I've stated in your previous videos, if you want to keep the whole mantra of brewing and consuming in the same video, might be best to start those sour beers now!
Hello Martin, I love the channel and you are doing a great job with it. I like how the video's are short and to the point but pack tons of info into just 10 minutes or so, very nice. I have one question on how you are dealing with all the different specialty grains. Are you grinding the all at the same mill gap? I am guessing so but want to ask cause I am thinking about doing the same. Keep up the good work and we'll keep checking in.
Last year I bulk bought a bunch of 1lb bags of hops at Yakima Valley Hops during a sale. That gets me through most brews and I just pick up smaller bags of hops when I need them.
Thanks for a great video. How has your efficiency been with the unibrau system? I have been getting low efficiency in the 60’s, but I think my crush size was too small.
I’ve got BeerSmith set at 68% for this system which is about right but is sometimes closer to 70%. Crush size has made a big difference for me so yeah maybe try changing that.
Since you are brewing each week and serving soon thereafter - what is your carbonation routine on these beers? PSI/timeframe until the tasting follow up?
@@TheHomebrewChallenge Good technique to know, also reinforces the idea that your mash can get really hot and still be fine. Boil it, squeeze it, sparge as hot as you'd like. It's going to be just fine
Hello and greetings from germany, the spelling of the hops is not correct, we say in german "Hallertauer Mittelfrüh" and not "Hallertauer Mittelfrüher". It is great fun to follow your channel, hold on and have fun....

G'wan Roy! Geezer doesn't drink and he necks a 6.4% German lager. Respect.
he is an absolute unit of a man
That was def Bernie Gumble in the flesh
Great videos. My only critique is if you are brewing to style, during the tasting segment, speak more to how it measures up against that style.
Great suggestion.

Yeah in subsequent brews I leave that raised vessel alone until it has drained. My own fault.
Love Roy, and his technique. Great series, slowly working my way through. BJCP 5 is right in my wheelhouse.
Homebrew dangers, had a hose flip out of my boil kettle on me at around 200f,ouch. ill have to try this style, great vid.
Ouch!
Ha that sucks, I opened my ball valve forgetting to connect my hose.... 200 f right at my nuts..

Yep it’s great to have the grains on hand but as you say figuring out which grains you’ll think you’ll need in the future is the trick

Another great video. Have you been fermenting your lagers under pressure?
No! Tell me more...

Great video. Would really like to try this one. What was your fermentation temperatures and time schedule for fermentation and lager time?
Cool! Hey why don’t you do a Munich Dunkel next? I could find many videos about Dunkels
Soon. That’s style 8A and I’m looking forward to it.
Get a 2 or 3 step ladder maybe? Its what I use on a "similar" set up
Good to see the home brewing spirit of worrying about the potential beer ahead of personal safety and comfort.
Haha so true. “But what about the precious beer?!”
Thanks Martin. Always enjoy your videos. Not sure how you can brew every week and stay so thin? Must be your water?

When I first saw the splash stains on the wall, I had a strong sense of what happened, from personal experience.
Wort spillers unite!
Haha been there as well... Live and lean :)

A bit of both 😂

I love the last comment ‘… I could drink 8 of them!’. What do you do with all the beer you brew, there must be so much in your house?

Yeah this has taught me to cover up a bit more. Boiling wort and skin are a bad combo.
High water salt content is another key element of this style. Did you adjust your water chemistry to match the style?
I did add 4g of Epsom Salt - although that was primarily to balance mash pH

About 7 gallons.

If it's Roy approved I'm making it

I force carbonate at 40psi for 36 hours. That usually seems to come out about right.
