One trick I’ve learned doing freehand; dullcoat the model before you get started, then use a pencil to lay down your design. If you mess it up, the dullcoat allows you to really use an eraser pretty hard to clean it off.
Wow so I've been on the fence about getting into WH40K, mainly because of the painting and actual construction of the minis, but man you've just inspired me to start. Thanks for all the great videos.
I'm a simple man. I see Miniac "Eavy Metal Marines, I click like. Would love to see Space Wolves here. Keep up the absolutely wonderful work, I live for your updates
Yes. These long takes are what i missed in the previous videos. Slowly spinning, so we can see every detail and stop the video with a clear frame. Perfect.
Tip I got from Steve Bowerman and Tom Moore, of citadel army painting team glory, was to base IF with a 50:50 mix of Yriel yellow and Averland sunset. This is definitely a less vibrant colour than the box art marine but seems to suit IF's style. Either way my experience with IF's was so traumatic that I've put them on permanent hiatus in favour of Blood angels... Brilliant tutorial as usual
I have spent a ludicrous amount of time painting imperial fists over the years. Doing an entire force is madness and I could feel your pain deep down in my soul.
Dude, been fun watching your skills improve through this 'Eavy Metal series. This guy is especially well done. Yellow is a gargantuan pain and probably the bane of mini painters the world over. Well done. Seriously great stuff.
Lovely painting as usual. And yes, yellow over black/brown is a royal pain in the rear. (several thousand points of 90's Brettonians taught me that) . Nice tip on shaved hair/five o'clock shadow. Much quicker than mixing in with the skin tone. I reckon I'll have to give this a go for one marine of each (main) Chapter. p.s. It's Latin not Spanish. Aquila should be pronounced Ah-kwi-la.
25:15 When comparing the final result to the box art we have to keep in mind that GW surely photoshops out small discrepancies to achieve that cleanliness. Overall it turned out amazing and is easily comparable!
Getting back into painting minis again thanks to your videos. Gonna try my hand at the Imperial Fists and I'm going to be taking a lot of the advice in this vid.
Awesome - I've just finished a bunch of Imperial Fist terminators, which I did in a completely different way ... but ended up with really similar appearances - Great Video as usual :D
A tip for the wood base next time: sand it with fine sand paper, use thin CA glue to completely cover the wood and let dry, add another coat and let dry, sand with fine sandpaper. At this point the surface should be smooth and flat like plastic. Use some spray sanding primer and sand with very fine paper. At this point it should be perfectly flat and smooth, ready for paint.
For the highlights on the purple feathers of the crest l, what it over the white you used, you could so a slight and thin silver to make those edges pop a bit more. Maybe that would get you closer to the box art like you wanted. Just an idea that has worked for me in the past. Looks great anyways man!
Fantastic work. Would love if you delved into painting Imperial Guard miniatures, especially since so many people have so many variations of doing the model's fatigues and it would interesting to see your channel's take on it
Awesome Video. Started Painting 2 Months Ago and tried replicating this style. Was nowhere near your result, but still was pretty happy with my Model. Learned many things while doing that. Thank you for this video and keep up the good work. (Yellow Paint is the devil ;D)
I do not use a rattle-can nor a airbrush. The best priming I have found is metal color diluted to far beyond the point of being called a wash. It works great and give a subtle priming color that is easily covered with no variance visible. Can someone comment on this so I get some thoughts and input.
Are you sure your not falling in love with space marines? Kick those skinny little dark Eldar to the curb! Beautiful Mini! Just what I've been waiting for.
Looking back on this video. I can see you have come along way scott. This still looks awesome compared to the level I am at but your stuff these days is unreal.
Just found your channel recently and spent most of my work day being both entertained and schooled. Great work! Love this space marines series and I hate space marines😂
Use Tamiya pannel lining. Its 100 times easier than how you paneled lined. After you have done the yellow spray the mini with matt clear, then add the panel lining. if you make a mistake you only need a damp ear bud to wipe away the mistake.
get a wine cork, rip it into chunks with your fingers, chop it with scissor, stick it in your "herb" grinder. This will give some very convincing rocks that are much easier to glue to a base than real rocks.
I am looking to start my collection of Primaris Space Marines, I am always noticing that you have the parts attached to something to hold it, the body attached to a block of wood and the head a cork, this sounds stupid but are you sticking them to the block and cork with super glue? i really would like to try this technique and I have not tried this. Please help,
would agrax earthshade be a good sub for the rhinox hide for recess shading? also, i feel like this yellow is a little too bright. maybe i just haven't be considering an imperial fists army enough to consider what shade of yellow would look nice
18:55 maybe try to make a stencil for the circle next time, a small circle is easily cut from some masking material. paint around it, remove it, center the detail on the mask an repeat on the actual mini. ;-)
a surprisingly low use of washes here. with hindsight do you think you could have saved your self a lot of pain (like panel lines) and still gotten a matching box art look by leaning into washes more ?
It looks great, but man, that is a long way to do yellow. Maybe using the airbrush helped. I prime white, base coat with Averland Sunset, wash in Nuln Oil, rhen rebase coat with Averland Sunset, then go over the armor again with Yriel Yellow.
@miniac have you ever used a jewelers lens? Or even the head band style magnifiers? I only ask because I know how much eye strain painting minis can cause. But my mother also used to paint minis. But she did sales with her work. She ended up stopping painting due to eye strain and poor eyesight with age.
I am planning on getting a set for myself. I remember all too well the eye strain i used to get trying to see the tiny details on miniatures back in the day. I was just curious what you thought about them and if you had experience using them. Also I have a ton of photos of military vehicles and even vehicles that suffered battle damage. I was a mechanic in the Army for 15 yrs and did 3 tours to Iraq. So if you ever need reference material for what real battle damage looks like just send me a PM. I won't send any pictures of vehicles that had had wounded or worse service members in them. I wont disrespect those guys by doing that. But I was also a recovery vehicle operator on a M88a1 medium recovery vehicle. So I had many recovery missions with this vehicle. I would be happy to help you out if you need reference material. Just know I will do it in a respectful manner and wont share stuff that people outside of my units should see or know about. Thank you for answering my questions man. You are definitely getting me as a patrion supporter when I can do that next month. Thanks again man. Also I am no longer active duty. I am a disabled vet. Thanks again man.

Excellent and tidy painting!
Nice! This is the best mini paint chanel that I found. Finaly I learned how to paint a mini with a decent visual.
You can use super glue as a finish on your plinth in your pseudo-lathe. It's a pretty common finish for lathe work that gets super smooth.
