Not a cop but I have talked with a homeless man who admitted to me that every year in the winter he will rob a store or gas station and get caught on purpose just so he has a roof over his head to get out of the rain before the heavy weather hits. He's never armed, he doesn't hurt or threaten anyone, he just grabs the first thing he can find that isn't food because honestly a lot of places where I live would just let him steal food and not press charges, no to actually get arrested he has to actually take something of value and walk out with it making sure he's seen with the stolen property so the cops are called. As far as he was concerned jail was free food, a bed, and protection from the weather. And it's sad that he even has to resort to that.
There are also homeless shelters where I live but they're only available to women. Places for men who are homeless don't exist. I know some other places have homeless shelters that are open to everyone but here it's women only.

One of my friends is a cop. She absolutely HATES her job. As she explains it, female police officers usually draw the short straw in domestic violence or neglect cases involving children. They show up, Dad is in handcuffs, mom is dead of an OD, and the three young kids are by default her responsibility until a social worker can arrive. They always have the female officers deal with the kids, and in that line of work, the situations involving kids are never something anyone wants to deal with. She hates the job, but won't even consider quitting. As much as it sucks for her to have to be there for the kids, she couldn't live with not being there for them in those situations. But what really destroys her is seeing these kids years later getting arrested for their own crimes.
She once spoke at a school career day for girls. Her advice to the girls wanting to know how to become a cop was one word... "Don't". Not what the school or her employer were expecting her to say, obviously. She's an amazing person, but she has a look in her eyes you'd only expect to see on a veteran from the losing side of a war. I don't know any specific sad stories from her. I know not to ask, but you can tell by looking at her, she's got many.

Honestly don't understand #13, why did he still get arrested even after it was proven he didn't break his parole. Even if the paperwork/report had already been filled out, I'm sure someone could have just corrected it. Human error happens all the time, and no one is willing to spend an extra 15 minutes solving the problem. Especially since it was right before Christmas...that's just disgusting to do to someone.

I was actually arrested for petty shoplifting cuz I just became homeless. The officer was a really chill guy and just sat with me in the store office for a verdict of if I'd be taken in or not. His saddest story was a 9 year old little girl that called and said her daddy was dead. He got to the house and the little girl was completely naked, bruised, bleeding, and covered in... Stuff. He got her wrapped in a blanket and asked where her dad was. He was in her bedroom with a knife sticking out of his neck. He was also naked.
His saddest arrest was the little girl who had to kill her own father to save her life.

      I have 2 stories.
First: Yeah, I'm that guy. When I go to the hospital with an injury, I ask the Dr what's the worst thing you've treated. I use that just as kinda an ice breaker. Just to start a conversation. They don't seem to mind and I've collected some good stories over the years.
Well, in July of 2004 me and some friends were out flying our Honda CR500s and I came off the 4th jump wrong. Had to unass it about treetop high. Shattered...let me repeat that..SHATTERED my left tibia and fibula (bones in my lower left leg) when I ask my Ortho what was the worst thing you treated he just looked at me for a minute and said "You sustained a Schatzker level 6......there IS no level 7. The worst thing you can possibly do to a leg is exactly what you did."
      Ooooookay. Ask and answered. 🤣🤣
Second story: When I was in the Navy stationed at Ft Worth, we had a Chief that was kinda an a-hole. Nothing personal. It was just his persona. One time for about 2 weeks he really turned into a dick. I mean an above and beyond, over the top DICK. Not just to me, to everyone. I should say here he was also a volunteer firefighter. I donno why he chose me to open up too, but after about 2 weeks of this, we were sitting in the smoke pit and he told me he had been called out to an accident where a guy was pulling a bush hog behind a tractor on a slope that was too steep. The tractor rolled over and he got run over be the bush hog. The Chief was the one that had to pull pieces of him out of the blades. I guess him telling me about it relieved some stress because after that he went back to his usual a-hole self.

Similar to the one with the 90 year old man losing his licence in the beginning. My grandmother has a history of car crashes. Never hit another car, only stationary objects somehow. I don’t know how she didn’t have her license taken. She backed into a tree and kept trying to wedge inside of it claiming “she didn’t see it and didn’t understand why she wasn’t backing into the parking space” she hit a pole in our school while me and my sister was in the back and the pole is still bent and still has blue car paint, she turned into a parking lot while her mom, my great-grandmother, my sister and I were in the car, ran onto the curb and drove into a mailbox at full speed, breaking every single door out of about 20. The only time she was in a crash with another car, this idiot didn’t see the stop light and T-boned her. He tried to blame her for running the stop light in which she showed the police pictures of it, in which she won the case after seeing that it was him who ran the stoplight.

That last story about the old man who hit someone while driving, and the wife who feels guilt for asking him to drive when she knew he probably shouldn't be driving, is an important lesson for anyone with an elderly relative. I've never told anyone this, but a few years ago, I took my dad's car keys and hid them. It was clear he no longer had the cognitive capacity to drive safely. I had been in the car a few times with him when he almost hit someone, or did odd things like drive holding a flashlight to see the dash, or forgot how to turn the windshield wipers on. When he drove alone, he would frequently run out of gas and have to call my mom to come pick him up. Finally, one day when he left his keys in the kitchen, I pocketed them. My mom believed he lost them outside and took that as a sign along with his other behaviour that it was time to sell his car. My dad was so certain that he left his keys in the kitchen and suspected my mom took them, but she would've admitted to it fairly quickly so I'd imagine he's got some unresolved feelings about what really happened. I don't think he ever fully accepted the explanation that he must have dropped his keys somewhere.
My dad now lives in a care home and has early stage dementia. I know he would've kept driving until he got into a major accident. He would've been one of those people who drive into a store because they mistake the gas pedal for the brake, or just straight up run someone over at an intersection. I never should've been the one who had to step up and call it. Part of being a responsible driver - a responsible human being - means realizing there will be a time when you can no longer drive safely due to age or illness and you will need to give up that privilege. You can maybe expect your spouse to take on some of that responsibility, since that's your partner, but don't make your kid have to bear that burden of essentially "taking away your freedom" just because you don't want to man up. Both of my parents really failed in how they handled the situation. I hope anyone reading this will take a moment to think about how you'll handle it when the time comes for you or a loved one.

In the American legal system you can end up serving multiple life sentences depending on the nature of your crime(s) and there is also the potential to do it with no hope of parole or a reduction in sentence. There are people who enter the system at 18 and don't leave until they are old men with their entire life gone (50/60+ years later) or die.

Absolutely, Albeit as a rule it is wrong to kill someone... I still see exactly why she did it and can find the reasoning fairly reasonable, she wanted to end the cycle of violence by putting an end to her aggressor. Granted would it have been better for her future if she could have moved and gotten therapy? Yes, and even now I do think therapy is the correct answer not jail time. As for the person who got killed, Again as much as I do not condone murder I can safely say they brought that on themselves, ideally they would have been arrested before any of this happened but still I can't say the killer in this case was evil for doing what she did.

Because despite it not being an intentional crime, he did still murder a person. That person deserves justice, their family will never get to see them again. The hopes, dreams, plans ect of the victim will now never come true. All because someone who should never have been driving was behind the wheel that day. It also wasn't until later that the arrest happened, meaning in addition to vehicular manslaughter he fled the scene of a crime. We don't know if the person he killed was still alive after being hit, and him driving away, not calling EMS, meant his death. Or if a fast response could have meant the victim lived. In the end this man did kill another person and is a danger to himself and others. I agree it's sad, and all of this could and should have been avoided. But when a person becomes a threat to themselves and others it's not safe for anyone for them to be free to roam around. Also I'm sure the person he killed was more than a little pissed off that the old man who shouldn't have been driving in the first place was allowed to take his life, and bring untold pain to his family.

the part about that story that really ticked me off was the supervisor's insistence without having the guts to do it himself...I would have told him to his face write me up for insubordination, suspend me, whatever, but you're handing this ticket to that man not me

Story 5- That girl snapped and was almost certainly under emotional duress depending on how bad the bullying was. She meeds therapy and very light jail time.
I have no sympathy for bullies and they deserve what their victims do to them even if that is death.

the thing is sometimes the police do look the other way and sometimes that's a good thing or sometimes it's terrible and they're just being lazy. Example my sister has had multiple DUIs has crashed/totaled her car more times than I can count and she still has a license and she's been let go without a report or charges being made multiple times. Her only saving grace is that she hasn't hurt anyone but herself so far but honestly it's only a matter of time
