I realize it has literally been YEARS since you commented this, but the reason why it sounds that way is that the foundation of the piece is The Dies Irae, an ancient human song about death.

In old London, the darkened streets brighten like a light from heaven, the moment this song begins playing.
It's as if he didn't receive a single present on Christmas and now his unleashing his anger and fury for the world to hear. Beautiful indeed. But on a serious note, I love this version so much. It's absolutely the BEST that I've ever heard. And wow, whether it's on a violin or piano, Carol of Bells will always sounds amazingly epic. Tommy truly is talented artist for doing this on a piano.
The skill and passion in this is breath taking.
My father is a pianist, he is unable to play now.....however, his passion and skill were awesome. I have never met a greater pianist than my father. I have in fact met a few artist and they are all wonder, however, my dad is the best.
