Countries With The Best Military Assault Rifles (Ranked)

  • Published on Mar 6, 2026
  • Every major military power on Earth claims their standard-issue assault rifle is the best. They produce slick propaganda videos, inflate their specs on paper, and charge taxpayers billions of dollars for "modernization." But when the bullets actually start flying, marketing doesn't matter. Physics does.
    We are cutting through the nationalistic hype to rank the top 10 assault rifle manufacturers in the world. This isn’t a popularity contest; it’s a brutal look at engineering, combat effectiveness, and logistical reality. We are separating the battle-hardened legends from the overpriced plastic toys and the manufacturing disasters that shouldn't have left the factory floor.
    We’re taking a hard look at the different design philosophies that drive the world’s armies. You’ll see why some nations, like Switzerland, treat their rifles like mechanical watches-building instruments of incredible precision that are too heavy and complex for modern expeditionary warfare.
    We investigate the "quantity over quality" approach of the East, specifically looking at China’s struggle to modernize their arsenal and the embarrassing ballistics issues plaguing their newest flagship rifle.

The G36 is a toy made of plastic.. the reason they adopt it is NATO munition to adhere to NATO standards, but this means weaker calibre .. hurray female soldiers are happy and german army loves cutting costs! :)

      The guys in Ukraine seem to prefer the 36 over the 416. Not sure about the A5, but so far I've heard issues with some of the design choices up to and including the A3. Very similar operating systems. 416 is beautiful, hopefully the A5 looks very promising. A lot of the things I've heard the troops have issues with have been changed. Valgear does a pretty good breakdown. 2 of my buddies had similar feedback on the earlier 416s.

      Poland’s mainstream military rifles are the FB Beryl and, increasingly, the FB MSBS “Grot” (which has similarities to the Bren 2).
      Polish Border Guard is specifically reported as using the CZ Bren 2, and Polish special forces use a variety of weapons which may include the Bren 2 and its variants.

    • @herkulespoirot2697

      @TigDegner Unfortunately, the information from the Česká zbrojovka website about the use of the CZ BREN 2 PPS is incorrect. Only samples were obtained for comparative testing. Although highly rated, the Polish Army and the Polish Border Guard selected the domestically designed BOR and MSBS Grot 7.62N rifles for use in the Polish Army and the Polish Border Guard. However, the Polish Border Guard uses a number of CZ P-10 series pistols.

      @herkulespoirot2697 if I'm not mistaken, we are in agreement? You may have confused my comment with someone else's.
      For the Polish Border Guard, there are documented contracts and reporting for MSBS Grot (5.56) and MSBS Grot 7.62N.
      CZ Bren 2-family rifles have been tested by SG and appear in SG training-center weapon lists, but I haven’t seen a clear public procurement announcement showing Bren 2 PPS adopted as a standard SG rifle.

      He had several large-scale upgrades and improvements. The latest version is just a diamond. By the way, the two-shot mode was excluded there.
      On the AK-12 model of the 2023 model, the muzzle compensator brake with a bayonet mount gave way to a non-removable slit compensator with a conical inner part. To attach a low-noise firing device, the shooter now does not need to separate the muzzle brake compensator and take care of its safety. The muffler is easy to install and fix on top of the compensator. The handguard has also undergone structural changes with additional fastening of the gas tube lining with a transverse pin in the front and rigid positioning in the rear. There are other important innovations. Its protective properties have been noticeably improved - now it better protects the shooter's hand from high temperatures during intense shooting. Increased accuracy of firing due to a shift in the mass of the bolt carrier and a reduction in the recoil shoulder...
      As a result of the improvements made, the AK-12 became lighter and more convenient for the soldier. Its resource has also increased.

      The only reason the QBZ-191 was considered bad in this video was more than likely because of test firing videos of the rifle that surface on BiliBili (Chinese RUclips essentially) which showed the rifle key holing a whole lot. It was later proven that rifle was using rubber bullets which are notorious for causing trouble in certain rifles. So I personally think the 191 isn’t that bad.

    • @Dapicomp
      @Dapicomp Month ago +2

      So the biggest problems with the Chinese QBZ191 are: 1) they are only used in China, 2) they use ammos with a calibre that are only used in China, for over 30 years?
      so the F22s must be shit since no other country has "adopted" it.

    • @PKfourty
      @PKfourty Month ago +2

      @Dapicomp Chinese manufacturers have produced export variants of the QBZ-191 which are chambered in 5.56x45. These variants (CS/LR42 and QBZ-195T) are currently being exported to Hong Kong and Thailand. So that debunks your first claim. Now as for your second claim, if the 5.8 mm round is so bad, why would China keep it instead of reverting back to their stockpiles of 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r?

    Italian army is planning to change all the arx160 with the new beretta Narp in the very next future, which is developed by Beretta in collaboration with italian special forces....the french GIGN has alredy planned to change their bren 2 with the new Narp praetorian in 6.5 grendel.
    The rifle is new and of course not tested in mass operations but it seems to be one of the best assault rifles at the moment.

  • @Arty_McParty
    @Arty_McParty Month ago +6

    This is the realistic part of warfare , it all looks good on paper , but in reality , this are the thing you need in a gun.
    1-Durability
    2-Simplicity
    Most guns are great and most guns are lethal, we are human beings not tanks most bullets can end us if striked in right part of the body , some can't be covered like armpits , face , and you can hit on arthery in your leg , arm also it just easier to control if you act fast, if it hits in groin area , arpit , neck , these are the most complex wounds which can't be tourniqued or cut off , so technically any gun is valid , even your hand-gun!
    It's about volume of your shots , that's why when you see or experience combat you notice a lot of firing back and forth , it's not becuase they see on enemy , it's for , two things...
    1-Suppressing fire
    2-% on hitting somethng
    When you hear wissle and other sounds of guns you don't want to pick your head up! And another indicator that your enemy know where you at and they are not out of ammo...
    Most ACTUAL Combat is just spraying in to direction enemies at, you don't see many people aiming down the iron sight , possibly slightly , but nothing like the games you play "Call of duty" etc, no one has time sit there and aim , you become sitting duck yourself as on easy target while you find your target and aim at it ...
    If I Had to pick this would be my picks
    This what you looking for in a gun
    -Realiable > Light > Simple > (Nothing too long you not sniping and if you get in to close range buildings you be in apickle and if you don't have Beretta , Five-7 or Makarov you screwed.)
    Everything else all situational . And most guns can be good in some scenarios then others.

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago +3

      Durability and simplicity matter way more than anything, and most rifle fire in real fights is about suppressing and keeping heads down, not perfect aim like a game.
      Only thing I’d add is “easy to hit with” still counts too. A rifle can be reliable, but if it’s hard to control, hard to mount an optic, or the ergonomics slow you down, your hit chance drops even if the gun never jams.

      @thegunversity Wait, but you included the FN SCAR in the list, which also had problems in its infancy (pre-series version). Much of the criticism stems from articles sponsored by competitors who lost comparative tests conducted by the Military University of Technology and attempted black PR. Contracts for the supply of assault rifles are worth millions of dollars, and some companies don't like new players entering the market, eager to grab a piece of the pie.
      PS. Poland does not use the Czech CZ Bren 2 automatic rifles, they were only tested with other rifles in 2018 and 2020 by the Polish Border Guard. From 2022, the Polish Border Guard is being re-equipped with the wz. 96 Beryl rifles withdrawn from the army.

    Hi there, I was realy surprised to find my service rifle in your video and even on position number 3. The AUG 77 was everybodys darling in Austrian Army in my duty period 1994 for many reasons, some not mentioned. First of all, it made a sniper of every soldier, headshot on 200 meters guarenteed. The aiming optic is part of the rifle body and you can use it for carring it or even running. That brings me to the second advantage of this rifle. It is light like an airgun, the body is fully synthetic, and short like a submachine gun. It was made for fast movement and climbing, impotant in the Alps. Third advantage, it always works with temperatures under -20 degree Celsius. That can happen in the Alps in winter time. And point number four, it is real easy to clean. Made of a minimum number of components. As I mentioned, everybodys darling.😊

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago +1

      That's great to hear from someone who actually served with it. The integrated optic and weight are exactly why Austria got it right for alpine warfare.
      The cleaning simplicity and cold weather performance at minus 20 are huge advantages most people overlook.
      Appreciate you sharing the real world experience with it.

    If they start making 7.62 rounds like rcbd round dropping the grains down to 100 to 110 it is effective out to 600 yards no sweat

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago +3

      A lighter 7.62 at 100 to 110 grains can definitely push velocity up and flatten it a bit, but it usually gives up ballistic coefficient, so wind drift and staying stable past 400 to 500 is where reality hits.
      “No sweat at 600” is optimistic unless the load is really dialed and the barrel twist is matched. A lot of people chase light bullets and then get surprised when the heavier ones track better at distance.

      I get why people like the ARX160, it feels great in the hands and it’s crazy light. I ranked it low because “feels good” isn’t the same as “wins fights”, and the mushy trigger plus the flexy polymer rail setup and bulk profile are real downsides once you start caring about keeping zero and making consistent hits. It’s a PowerPoint perfect rifle that still comes with tradeoffs people gloss over when they only talk about how it handles.

    How out of date could you be? Australia has now implemented the EF88 Austeyr, and a magazine swap was far from difficult even with the original weapon. Without ever having handled one before, I once stripped one down past simple field-stripping and reassembled it with ease in minutes. Granted, an Aussie soldier around 1990 trained to use SLR's, F1 SMG's, 9mm FN pistols, and a bunch of machine guns and anti-armour weapons shouldn't have any problems with such a simple system, but nor should any competent American soldier. They are ideal particularly for shorter soldiers due to the balance, is that the problem? They're different so therefore suspicious.

    The Galil was developed and produced in conjunction with the South African Armscor back in the late '70's and early '80's. In the SADF they were called the R4. 5,56 mm and very reliable. The only weakness was the rear sight mounted on the pressed plate steel cover of the bolt. This cover could move slightly during manouvers throwing the accuracy around. Once that problem was fixed it turned out to be a great assault rifle. 35 or 50 round magazines. Bipod which had inbuilt wire cutters. Rifle grenade config was standard, as was night sights.

    Norway and a few other NATO countries have been issuing the 416 as the standard rifle for many years by now. Norway was the first country to standardize on this platform back in 2007, with the first deliveries in November that year.
    As a reserve officer I always liked my AG3 (serial 196296) which I got 3 decades earlier (in 1977) when I finished my compulsory service, but the 416 is of course a lot easier to carry around and more comfortable to shoot.

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago +1

      Norway really was ahead of the curve with the 416, way before it became the “default answer” rifle for a lot of NATO units.
      And respect on the AG3 too, those old battle rifles have a special kind of charm, but yeah carrying one all day makes you appreciate how much nicer a lighter 5.56 carbine feels.

    The real value is found in the second hand (used) market. Regardless of original purchase price, the second hand market caters to people without national or political objectives. I have no idea what it is now but I do recall seeing the black market prices for both the M16 and AK-47 and they both highly valued by people who needed a lot of guns and had a choice.

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago +3

      That’s a solid point, the secondhand market is basically the most honest “rating system” because it’s pure demand, ammo availability, and what survives abuse. AK and M16 both stay expensive for different reasons, AK for rugged simplicity and M16 for common mags, parts, and 5.56 supply in a lot of places.

    Yet again, another list the omits the L85A3 just because of the history with the A1.
    The L85A3 has shown to out perform the M4. The main problem with the L85A3 now is the lack of ability for left handed users... i.e. all soldiers are right-handed. But that is not enough of an excuse to omit it from this list when compared to some of the other rifles here, as the L85A3 is extremely accurate, has the bullpup capability mentioned in the AUG segment, and it is now an extremely reliable rifle.

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago

      Fair take. I didn’t leave the L85A3 out just because of the A1 memes, I left it out because this video is ranking countries by their mainline rifle “ecosystem” and export impact, and the L85A3 is basically a UK only solution with some hard limitations.
      A3 is absolutely a big improvement and it’s accurate and reliable, but the left hand issue, weight, and the whole bullpup manual of arms still keep it from being a clean “best in class” pick for most armies.
      If we did a pure accuracy and build quality list, it would look a lot better.

    The Galil was a wonderful rifle; incredibly reliable, and it did everything you would have ever wanted, but it hasn't been made for decades and the tools were scrapped. But it wasn't 'phased out' because of weight: the US unloaded (for free) all the M16A1s from the first Gulf war, (It's called 'nobbling a competitor') and as every government always has something else to do with money, we were given the M-16. Which was an unreliable pig. We went from never having problems to lines at the armourer's shed every morning. (not just my opinion: see "The Gun" on the Atlantic: "If you have a round that won't seat, and you push it in with the thumb loader and fire it, you REALLY have problems". ). From then on, buyers would arrive and say "But YOU aren't using the Galil. why would WE buy it?" The M-16 was known for preventing you from getting to base and home by hitchhiking, because of it's length. (most Israeli autos are small ones) As for the Czech rifle, 200 metres is a long distance, and you don't see much from that distance. If anything. Nor can most people hit anything at that distance. The M4? Why would anybody want a direct impingement system? WHY? The critics are right. Will 5.56 penetrate good body armour? I'm curious. Copying that crappy magazine system is just another example of American pressure to conform to... American standards... because if they don't get their way, they take their toys and go home. "It's gotta be 'murican". Plastic magazines may solve the problem, (I never had any) but the metal ones are famous for getting slightly bent and from then on giving you a double feed. An early example of what they now call "interoperability", even though it looks like they really are going to take their toys and go home this time. Plus the Ace is made in the US, for commercial sales, and Americans expect to get something that looks ... American.

      You’re not wrong that politics and free M16A1s played a huge role, that kind of aid can kill a local platform overnight.
      But the Galil weight and ergonomics were still real complaints once everyone started moving toward lighter carbines with optics, and Israel moving on didn’t happen for just one reason.
      On the M16 thing, early setups plus maintenance and mag issues made it look way worse than the later A2 and M4 era, and DI itself isn’t automatically “unreliable” if the system is built and gassed right.
      Also 5.56 vs armor is mostly “depends on the plate and the ammo”, modern plates stop a lot more than people think, which is why the caliber debate never ends.

    • @richardsmiley7272
      @richardsmiley7272 Month ago +1

      @thegunversity I never met anyone in the IDF who complained about weight. We hated the length of the M16. It was known as "Nun Tet", an acronym which normally means anti-tank, but in this case was anti-tramp (tramp being hitchhiking.). In small European autos it was nearly impossible to get in and out with that rifle. Optical sights? Well, since you can't see anythone that is trying to hide beyond about 100 feet anyway it doesn't matter that much.

    AK 12 went through lot of changes since then though. Most of the issues with it are solved now also there are different versions of the rifle for different calibers for export market and shorter length version for urban warfare. fire selector is ambidextrous now. Also they removed the burst mode. The rifle not holding 0 was an assumption by lot of gun review RUclips channels since then they demonstrated it does infact hold 0 even after lot of rounds. I watched some of their videos, Apparently designers from the Kalashnikov themselves travel to the front line to ask feedback and thoughts about the rifle so soldiers can directly complain to the people actually making the rifle. And I believe some of attachments previously bought separately by the solders now comes with the rifle itself.

    • @thegunversity
      @thegunversity  Month ago

      Thanks for the detailed update! I wasn't aware they'd addressed so many of those issues. The burst mode removal makes sense honestly, and if they fixed the zero retention problem that was probably the biggest complaint I saw floating around.
      The designer feedback loop is actually pretty smart - going directly to frontline users instead of relying on military bureaucracy.
      Do you know if these improvements are standard on all new production AK-12s now or are they rolling them out in phases?
      Because if Russia's actually issuing the updated versions widely, that changes the ranking quite a bit from what I covered in the video.
