This is my favorite episode of the series. Definitely the most mature, nuanced, and I love the noir detective feel of it. Jet is such an under rated character.
Was just a normal episode for me a while, but the more I watched it the more it became one of my favorites. The bittersweet ending of an old partner wanting to go out by the man he wronged and stabbed in the back is such a a great concept. And the one last smoke to me was accepting that he never really changed: he didn't shoot Jet this time, but he did lie to him and go behind hisbback ine last time. He put Jet's life at risk one last time, but this time it ended in the best way possible; Jet living, and the final loose ends being tied up.
Every episode's name is a musical allusion and Black Dog is the name of a dope Led Zeppelin song. If anyone hasn't heard it check it out. Also this episode makes me feel bad for Jet's actor in the live action, Mustafa Shakir, as he absolutely nailed the role and seemed to be the only one that cared about fidelity to the original. I can't recommend Cowboy Bebop enough just like I can't tell you how horrible the live action was enough. They learned their lesson though which is what made the live action One Piece a success. Always always respect the source material, the original author, and the fans. They did Cowboy Bebop so dirty.
