This scene is not puppetry, though - it's the actres with two other people standing behind her (though there are a few takes where they seem to have used artificial arms). Actually, the effects in this movie (I think it's from 1940) were grounbreaking for their time...The musical piece that goes with this scene is "The Dance of the Silver Maid", but having the character dance would have been impossible at that time if they had wanted to show multiple arms at the same time. It's actually one of my favorite films of all time; I remember when I was small, they showed it every Christmas Eve.
Like many people I saw this when I was a young kid, got freaked out and had it it chiselled into my memory, but now that I'm watching it again it's amazing how much my memories of it got wrong. I "remember" her having a more impassive and statue-like face, inhumanly long and thin arms to go with the spider-like elements, music in the background that's more evocative of clockwork (I probably conflated it with the wind-up doll scene from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and having a more efficient and mechanical stabbing motion when she kills him. It's funny to think that my child's eyes saw and remembered the uncanny valley effect the film makers may have had as their vision, without the filter of the special effects limitations. There are a number of Disney films that have had the same thing happen (eg. my memories of the opening of Beauty and the Beast had the painting being shredded by a shadow that was too quick to see, and the Beast himself being much more badly lit and shadowy than I see as an adult), but I hadn't realised I was getting false/exaggerated memories of live action films too, though it makes total sense that I would. There's so much I need to rewatch!
I watched this back in the 80s, and for some reason, until now i remembered her as, not being an actress, but a stop motion figure with blue arms, who pulled the dagger from a cavity inside her head.
This is literally why I went through the trouble of finding this scene and making it available. There was something so special and unique about it and I knew I couldn't be the only one who was affected by it. I looked for it everywhere but I couldn't find it, so I decided I was going to find it myself and make it accessible to everyone who needed to see it again. 🤘

I just watched this movie after seeing an interview with Francis Ford Coppola who loves it. Up until this scene, I had totally forgotten watching it as a kid. When she appeared, I immediately felt the same way I did as a kid seeing her. Totally freaked me out. Still feeling pretty icky about it tbh.
Yes! I remember that scene too! A lady toy that stood still and would crush someone when she hugged. Is it from a different movie? It messed me up as a kid .
The Silvermaid is played by Mary Morris and she doubled as Halima; an agent of Jafar. The story goes that the directors entertained revealing the Silvermaid to be Halima and the handmaids; however, many felt the revelation would not be palatable to 1940’s audiences. Although using humans and parts for his creation would be within the scope of Jafar’s character, the fact the Silvermaid is made from people familiar to the audience before the transformation was just too repulsive. That is why Halima, the handmaids and the Silvermaid are not seen again, in order to move the story along and prevent the audience from dwelling on the Silvermaid’s origins. Supposedly, raw clips taken to support this approach are locked away in a film vault in the UK.
@@arminiuschatti2287 thanks for the item. Been looking for a movie that had a similar scene of this but instead of having 6 arms, she had two and would squeeze people to death with bear hugs. Been looking for over twenty years and this is the closest I’ve gotten...
This is pretty funny, since a similar scene in a Harryhausen Sinbad movie where the villain animates a statue of Kali has HINDUS complaining about insults and blasphemy! Every religion has its snowflakes...
One of my favorite movies. This scene completely fucked me up as a child. Puppetry and movie magic will always be better than CGI
same here

Totally freaked me out when I was a kid. Seeing this like a bad flashback. NOPE.

I remembered the spider scene so vividly except I remembered more spiders being at the bottom of the tomb not a squid.

@@momexrath Thanks for doing that, it's definitely appreciated
I had the exact same alternate recall as you! I also remembered the blade being longer!
Good thing I first saw Mary Morris as the exotic ingenue in 'Pimpernel Smith'. Such a mesmerising presence!
Let’s not forget! No cgi in those days that’s why I think this film is under rated‼️

Silver Maiden: the nightmare of my childhood!
It's not "Silver Maid," it's "Siva" maid. With the multiple arms she resembled the Hindu God Shiva (who is spelled "Siva")
Yeah That's why she was Silver lol
This used to frighten me as a child. I really do not understand why he went near her. She looks so evil.
Because he’s been hypnotized by her stare. One of Jafar’s mechanisms in the manakin.
She was a new Toy.
As a dancer this scene gave me so much inspiration to my style. I love this scene to death
It's so evocative and fascinating. This movie was a strange and beautiful gem.
Pun fully intended, I presume.
I’d love to see the behind the scenes for this scene..that maiden just is Scary and incredible at the same time
Great!💖📽🎬🎞🎥🌟🤩👍👏
From Hong Kong🙋♀️🌏💝🌺🥰
Even stands up to today’s standards - Its a wonderful movie 👍
When A king just wants to consoom the next product......only to be consoomed himself.

I wouldn't even get NEARR that thing!!
I swear I remember her crushing someone to death with a hug. A guard they used to test her?

@@arminiuschatti2287 Fantastic. He Killed Halima and her girls and morphed them.on this Dangerous Toy. That's why Halima is Missing after this scene.

I been done like that by women...
You mean they seduced you like this actress?
They were disrespecting the Muslims due to their defeat during crusade wars
It's from a 1940's movie. It's not meant to be interpreted in neither a political or religious aspect. It's from a 1001 nights tales.
