Not me! I want to know more about trolls to better decipher real trolls from "perceived trolls" in real life! I find it as fascinating as a Karen calling someone else a karen (when they aren't being a karen)
Trolls from Norwegian fairy tales and folk lore comes in alot of shapes and forms, some big as mountains, some small like cats, some friendly, some not so much. Many of them can be cathegorised into a group of ''mythical creatures'' in Norway we call ''De underjordiske'', meaning something similar to ''those who dwell underground'', because that is where alot of trolls in Norwegian folklore is believed to reside, inside mountains and under the earth. One famous ''figure'' amongst ''de underjordiske'' is a creature called ''Huldra'', she isn't really a troll, but she can be viewed in the same cathegory as some of the types of trolls who lives inside the earth. Huldra is said to be a ''beautiful woman'', often said in folklores that people can meet her at the open marshes, or inside deep forests where she will show herself to lonely travelers, often lost in the forest. She looks like a beautiful, almost half naked woman and seduces and tricks men to follow her into the mountain, and if they do she closes the mountain behind them, trapping them underground forever. It is also worth to mention that according to the folklores, should one look close enough, one can see that ''Huldra'' has the ''tail of a cow'', which is also very often a similarity to other ''Troll'' figures in Norwegian folklores, the cow's tail. Also.. Hulda isn't really a beautiful woman, it's just her ''illusion'' according to the folklores, to trick and seduce men. She is actually quite ugly and gruesome looking, like any troll often are portrayed. Also, ''troll'' is probably a old word for something related to ''magic'' in Norwegian, ''trollkvinne'' is a different word for ''heks'' or ''witch'' in Norwegian. While it's litteral translation is ''trollwoman''. More traditional and ''stereotypical'' trolls from folklore is often ''made of rock'', or will atleast ''turn to rock, and die'' if they are exposed to sunlight. There are so many cathegories and sub-cathegories of ''Scandinavian folklore trolls'' that I probably couldn't list even half of them if asked, just know that they come in many different shapes and forms, most often mischievous and decietful, but some are friendly or neutral, or even helpful when shown respect. Like the ''Fjøsnisse'' which isn't a troll but more like a ''nisse'', but not to be mistaken by ''julenissen'' which is Santa Clause, a ''Fjøsnisse'' is more like a troll in the sense that it's more a mythological creature, that often is said to reside inside farm houses, watching over life stock, and they are often if not always helpful and kind. But what a Fjøsnisse and Troll have in common is that they are often viewed as more of a ''spirit'' than something physical.. Of course in the folklores and stories they are portrayed as physical creatures existing in our world, but it has been a tradition in Norway for some farmers to put out a bowl of porridge in their farm house around christmas, to ''appease the spirit'', because the folklores explained that if you were kind and respectful towards the ''Fjøsnisse'', it would keep watch over your cows and animals, and keep sickness away from them. So no matter if its a Nisse or a Troll, these things have always been viewed on more of a ''spiritual level'', if that makes sense, like.. ''They may exist, but we can't see them because they are hiding, or even have the ability to turn invisible.'' I know.. Norwegian folklore is confusing, but our older fairytales often keeps to more traditional trolls so it's easier for someone new to get around the concept. From back in Norse Mythology, ghosts, ghouls and dark magicians was also a cathegory of ''trolls''. So my point with all this is that, most Scandinavian folklore about these various trolls and their cathegories often comes down to, ''forest spirits'' or ''spirits of nature'', maleviolent or benevolent. You could even say that the ancient ''Jotne/Jotun'' from Norse mythology can be cathegorised as a type of ''troll'', those being the ''ice giants'' from Jotunheim, the classical ''bad guys'' from Norse Mythology. Some traditional trolls from Norwegian folklore can easily be recognized by the sentence, ''Her lukter det kristenmanns blod!'' meaning ''Here I smell the blood of a man of christ!'' since many traditional trolls are portrayed in a way where they eat humans, while both hating and fearing christianity. So eating a ''holy man'' would be a win-win situation for that traditional type of troll.
GROZNAYA haha actually now days she looks like a old troll haha 😂 but no she hade troll statues and when we was drivning inte Mountain tunnels and there was also troll statues so my parents and The older ones..scared me and told scarry storys =)
Im watching these for a D&D game I'm making (and just out of interest) and when you mentioned the Peikko is Small to Huge I was like "wow thanks thats specific and helps me a lot"
Trolls are massively large creatures, with large ears, long noses, covered in hair, dim-witted and typically captured with large pits covered with branches and dirt......... in other words, they're likely mythologized mammoths. "Living mountains". I know there are also stories of frost giants throwing large stones, rocks, and even massive chunks of ice. Imagine a mammoth or mastodon throwing massive boulders, rocks, and tree branches at hunters.
The trolls that i have read about was large giant monsters with large noses and pointed ears. They are very interesting stories about mythical creatures of Norway.
Bara bra. Reminds me of the troll themed restaurant I ate at while visiting the Dalarna region in Sverige. It was so cool with dozens of detailed troll figures and troll paintings. Maten var välsmakande öckså. (excuse my poor svenska)
Where I live in Sweden there is a place in the forest near me where there is many huge stones and the legend said that the stones where throwd by angry trolls at the viking village there
Awh,there was no mention of Loki ,he was said to give birth to the Troll women, whom they descend from, ogres and witches. But I love these videos. These are great to listen to as I get on the bus to go to work.
Also trolls have appeared in the media in World of Warcraft you can play as a troll from the Horde Faction (Plus the druid form is the most cool part). In Dungeons and Dragons they were align of lawful evil. And including other media for trolls are Troll Hunter, Warhammer Fantasy, Box Trolls the movie, the live action German movie The Troll Hunter, and the childhood movie Trolls plus the second sequel Trolls World Tour. And sometimes they have tails too.
Awesome! I'm working on a video about Trolls also, and came in to see how much I got and didn't get. It should be posted in the next couple of days in case you would like to see my take on the creature ☺️👍
I had a couple Norwegian trolls as a kid and they scared me so much, I would see them full sized staring at me at the end of my bed. Why was I told that they protected my dreams, and now I find out that no they are just malevolent mythological creatures lol
Love this, just finished watching Netflix Troll, which was amazing. I wonder if Trolls were just left-over Neanderthal that hadn't blended in with human during those olden days
Very nice and well presented video! Now I will have to binge the rest of your channel. :) The Finnish troll you describe, however, is more of a common Scandinavian/Norse troll. There are more distinctively Finnish trolls too, called maahiset (or maahinen in singular form), who live underground.
@ 3;23, Trolls are considered to be related to Giants and in earlier stories they were often considered interchangable creatures- but thats, a story for another day.. And We are waiting with baited breath for you to tell THAT story SOON...
Looks like this one died in the flood the water was coming from below the ground, and above, and they sunk in to the ground. It was like quick sand to them because they were really heavy.
shamanic (spiritiual) practicies are exist all other, and the parasitic subtle body of slavic obour, and the baghest (bear/house/burial/mountion spirit) sharing similiaretis with this mound dweller alleged night hag attacks (turn into a cat, that grow more and more on the chest of his victims, crush him to death). I am highly wondering, if this unnatural metamorphosis of Glamr into this horrible being, came from fae=alien genetics, that start to kick in after the death=hibernation of fae-blooded human (similiar to the Palco fish, or the body became an "chrysalid-layer" of sort, for their new, transformed body).
These trolls sound incredibly similar to the Jewish legends of the Nephilum or fallen angels who took form as giants who also took human women to mate with and also ate humans

Trolls, giants, ogres, elves all used to be the same. Only through the course of evolutionary pedantry did they get specialized over time. Just like dragons. Back in the day, before the term dinosaur, dragons were pretty much any of the surviving creatures. Then pedantic Gumbies came along and tried to categorize and organize them into classes. Im ill, lying in bed with fever, I took my medicine and am listening to your stories, cause it calms me down 😊 thank you for your work
Hope you get better soon!

Just had a thought that og meaning of "trolls" is practically the same as "yokai" - Supernatural creatures in general
@@thanator4063 Yokai is a Japanese thing, not... Scandinavian
This series is like an industrial drill ripping right into the area of my brain where my interests lie.
Thank you!
Well put!

Hammas-peikko is one of the smallest-- tooth-troll that is.Too small to see. They make holes in the teeth and love sugar...
I just discovered this series, I'm about 4 videos in, and I am loving it!
This helped me with my Mythology term paper, and I cited you good. Thanks so much
The trolls where I grew up were literal living mountains. Always terrified me as a kid and I still think about them today when I'm in the wild
They are super scary when you are out in the wild!

What would be interesting is a troll venturing into a modern city at night and reeking havoc.
3 seconds in and i am madly in love with your voice
Here in Denmark the highest density of trolls is on the Island of Bornholm as far as I know ;-).

true, it's random wether aa trolls explodes or turns to stone.
