Hrad Helfštýn vznikol v 13. storočí vďaka sliezskemu šľachticovi Fridušovi z Linavy, ktorý sa tejto krajiny zmocnil za bezvládia, po smrti Přemysla Otakara II. Na najvyššej časti hrebeňa nad riekou Bečvou vybudoval malý hrad s oválnym pôdorysom a zneužíval jeho strategickú polohu na lúpeženie. Tomu urobil prítrž kráľ Václav II., keď roku 1287 ťahal na Moravu. Hrad dobyl a lúpežníkov nechal popraviť. Následne Helfštýn vyše sto rokov vlastnil rod Kravarov. V ich držbe prekonal veľkolepé stavebné zmeny. K ďalšej rozsiahlej prestavbe sa neskôr uchýlili Pernštejnovci. Pôdorys hradu tak dostal s konečnou platnosťou pretiahnutý tvar a veľmi dôkladné opevnenie. Po smrti Jána z Pernštejna musel byť Helfštýn predaný, kvôli rodinnému bankrotu. Novými majiteľmi sa stali Ludanicové, šľachtický rod zo Slovenska. Následne Hrad získali Bruntálski z Vrbna. Tí zbúrali starý hradný palác aj s pôvodným gotickým opevnením a na jeho mieste vznikol veľkolepý renesančný palác. Dnes je celá táto stavba len zrúcaninou. Po smrti Jiřího z Vrbna, čo bol posledný majiteľ hradu z rodu Bruntálskych, si vyprosil u cisára Ferdinanda II. Helfštýnsky statok kardinál František z Ditrichštejna. Horšie vrchnosti sa poddaní nemohli dočkať.
Ich nový pán bol preslávený chamtivým vykorisťovaním poddaných. Nie je sa preto čomu diviť, keď na jeseň roku 1626 prepuklo na celom Helfštýnskom panstve povstanie. Jeho následkom a tiež vďaka vojnovým udalostiam bol Helfštýnsky statok spustošený. Aj napriek tomu nebol Helfštýn nikdy dobytý. Postupom času hrad ďalej pustol a slúžil rôznym vojskám ako prechodné útočisko. Až po druhej svetovej vojne bol zaradený do kategórie štátnych hradov ako významná pamiatka. Vykonali sa zaisťovacie práce a archeologický prieskum, ktorý pomohol objasniť jeho minulosť.
Helfštýn Castle was created in the 13th century thanks to the Silesian nobleman Friduš of Linava, who seized this country during the anarchy, after the death of Přemysl Otakar II. He built a small castle with an oval plan on the highest part of the ridge above the Bečvá river and exploited its strategic location for robbery. King Václav II put an end to this when he invaded Moravia in 1287. He conquered the castle and had the robbers executed. Subsequently, Helfštýn was owned by the Kravar family for over a hundred years. In their possession, he overcame spectacular construction changes. The Pernštejn family later resorted to another large-scale reconstruction. Thus, the floor plan of the castle was finally given an elongated shape and a very thorough fortification. After the death of Ján z Pernštejn, Helfštýn had to be sold due to family bankruptcy. The new owners became the Ludanic family, a noble family from Slovakia. Subsequently, the Castle was acquired by the Bruntálskis from Vrbno. They demolished the old castle palace, including the original Gothic fortifications, and a magnificent Renaissance palace was built in its place. Today, this whole building is just a ruin. After the death of Jiří from Vrbno, who was the last owner of the castle from the Bruntál family, he begged Emperor Ferdinand II. Helfštýn estate of Cardinal František from Ditrichštejn. Their new master was notorious for greedily exploiting his subjects. It is therefore not surprising when in the autumn of 1626 an uprising broke out in the entire Helfštýn estate. As a result of it and also thanks to the events of the war, the Helfštýn estate was devastated. Despite this, Helfštýn was never conquered. Over time, the castle continued to fall into disrepair and served as a temporary refuge for various armies. Only after the Second World War was it included in the category of state castles as an important monument. Reclamation works and an archaeological survey were carried out, which helped to clarify its past.
