Then there is the story of Tertius, the Dragonborn no one wants to admit knowing. He deliberately chose to be a fighter, and added 2014 Purple Dragon Knight. He then took magic initiate, to learn 2014 True Strike.
I really like your attention to detail on this breakdown!! All the way down to taking the Heroism spell from level 1, but getting rid of it at level 10 (25:25) because the aura expands to immunity to the frightened condition. Most build creators add spells and forget about it, but your lists are never stagnant! I can tell that every level there is a re-evaluation of every feature / spell, and that is why you're the best IMO.
When I first subbed I was surprised to see you weren't already over 100k considering the quality and effort you put into your videos. A well earned milestone, congratulations :)
I love this demonstration that doing the baseline damage is just fine if you're bringing a lot in other areas. The Bard comes to mind too, where without the conjuration spells you might do pretty average damage but offer a ton in support, skills, etc.
The sad part is that Warlock or Valor Bard (with 1 level paladin dip) are actually better Smiters than full Paladins. Eldritch smite even guarantees prone while not reducing damage.
100k let's gooooooo I think stuff like Shining Smite, Wildheart (Wolf) Barbarian, and I think there are some more, which give advantage regardless of the attack type, are reaaaaally putting attack roll buiilds higher up in ways that are not very obvious. You got 2 warlocks that can adv eldritch blast every turn, maybe Sorlocks, maybe you even have a monk. That's a lot of advantage attacks. The shining smite is almost like a "marked for death" type of deal. Wolf barbarian has to be close to them ( enlarging yourself works well, if you can ) which will have potentially lower uptime, depending on the enemy, if they're staying away from you or not.
Love seeing an example of a character built to relate to another character in the party and demonstration that optimization can include theme and roles other than damage.
How did you feel about your gnome sorcerer being killed so early in the campaign? How much time and effort was invested in creating this character and backstory? Feels like a dm misstep to outright kill a character so soon. Or did you go into the campaign expecting this so didn’t get too attached?
Do you think it would improve the game if you had more HP at level 1 (maybe the amount you would have at lvl 3) but then didn't level up your HP until lvl 4? (Or thereabouts)
True and a lot of seasoned players do this. I more mean from a game design perspective. Would they have been better to add more HP to the start of the game so 1st time players are not as vaunerable at lvl 1? I can imagine there are a few players out there who played once, got killed immediately and then felt discouraged to play D&D again.
I’m going to play a Vengeance Paladin in a campaign my sister is writing. You just made me rethink my entire spell list with your last two videos. I had largely written off the smite spells since I planned to dual wield, but now I’m realizing between lay on hands and smites I’ll probably have my bonus action full and thus don’t really need the Dual Wielder feat at all, so I can do something else with my feat at level 4. Thanks Chris!
Cool video, fun concept. Sounds like an extremely useful member of the team. I’d love to hear about all the other party members and what they bring to the table. 29:44 When you show a graph, please include the y-axis scale.
I laughed 😂 so hard when the ship went across the screen! Merry Christmas Chris and thanks for all the great videos this year. Also the Stardust reference is the best!
4:54 man it feels good to have my ability score array justified by one of the best dnd youtubers. I had someone question why the wisdom dump, and I'm like bro you don't understand how MAD paladins are. Something has to get dumped and it can't be dex because I don't want AC penalties as a front liner. Though honestly, for my next paladin, I'm thinking about a level 1 warlock dip to help with the MADness. Charisma is just too important for the paladin. It literally drives the whole class. Wotc honestly should have created a weapon bond feature similar to warlocks so that paladins could use cha for weapon attacks.
I think Gaiman was referencing Roman naming habits, in which children were sometimes just called 'first' 'second' 'third' etc. So Primus, Secundus, Tertius (Una meaning something like 'singular' i think, my Latin is about 25 years rusty). Narratively it shows how little value they, as individuals, have to their father. Which fits rather well with your poor overshadowed Paladin.
WOTC definitely missed an opportunity to have the various smites work like Rogue's Cunning Strikes or Barbarian's Brutal Strikes. Make Divine Smite work the way it did in 2014 (but adding a once per turn restriction), with a damage cap so full casters can't outsmite full Paladins, and add higher level features unlocking the ability to trade damage dice for changing damage types and adding debuffs to replace the old smite spells.
I have a devotion paladin built for an upcoming campaign that focuses on being a shield for the party. He will use the protection fighting style and shield master feat. But now I'm reconsidering the build because being the second best paladin ever sounds pretty good!
The group i am dming for are playing with played a paladin a bunch at lv 4-9 . And i have to say these new smite options would have helped a LOT. And i will port them back into 2014that we are playing. A bunch of times there were high ac opponents that a conc low action cost would have dobe wonders . Then there were LOS /stealth abusing opponents it would have helped against. Especially since this is a conquest pala that can guarantie a hit when it matters. So yeah i like the new smites .
So just as a note on your point about there is more to dnd than damage, I remember your video's on the battlefield control wizard and the pacifist wizard. The number one go to spell of my last wizard was watery sphere, the sheer number of times I simply took one or two foes out of combat prioritizing either casters or high dex high damage foes and just kinda trivialized those encounters while otherwise just tossing around ranged cantrip damage, or throwing down a sleet-storm and turning an encounter to 1-2 enemies stumbling out of the spell every couple of rounds rather than 10 foes showing up over 2 rounds... so satisfying, and in a way that didn't make anyone else feel overshadowed . Sure I almost always did way less damage than the bard using magical secrets to get destructive wave, but like you said in those videos the C&C focus did more than any other one thing for the party overall in making those encounters go smoothly for our side.
I think that if you want to do multiclassing, Draconic Sorcerer could be a good call for you, it will grant you more life and more slots to burn with smite, will get you the shield magic and other kinds of various magic too, you will have the sorcerer points to quick spell things in your bonus action like True Strike, Hold Person, Mind Sliver and stuff, get access to the Innate sorcery and attack with advantage with your bonus action spells, this problably will resolve your problem with damage, and also can make sense with your history and lore at the time you choose the multiclass. I think that picking only 8 levels in paladin and the rest in Sorcerer would be the way to go (also maybe 1 or 2 levels in warlock to get hex, armor of agathys, and Eldritch Blast, Pact of the Blade and/or Agonizing Blast to put on True Strike or/and in the Eldritch Blast). 8 Paladin + 8 Sorcerer + 1 Warlock = 17 levels of the player character.
Would you consider a video for the gnome, even if it’s lowkey like your patreon only fighter build you did on dndbeyond? I love all your videos, but some of my favorite are when you are not just optimizing but synergising, either within a party or with a non-damage focused concept. I’d be curious how you approached this party and campaign as a sorcerer (even if you ate it in the second fight 😂).
I would love to hear about the other characters in the campaign. How did it feel to have your character die? Did you want to make a duplicate of that Wild Magic Sorcerer?
Oof. Level 1 playthroughs are always brutal. I always make a back up character, just in case. I'm extra careful when I'm playing a sorcerer or wizard. Paladins are awesome though! I'm glad you're having fun. I've been playing a goliath pact of the blade fiendlock/devotion paladin and its been really fun, we just hit level 6.
Sorry to be repetitive, but I would love to see the sessions of that campaign (or a similar one), every time you tell a detail it sounds very interesting
Lol, my comment from the last video was what would you do if you had to level up beyond level 13. Also. What characters are the rest of your party playing?
Congratulations to 100k subscribers ... what I am wondering the whole time this video and during the searing smite video is: you're on a ship ... wearing plate armor ... I know that DnD is not really realistic, but have you considered being thrown off your ship? You'll be sinking like stones in your plate armor ;)
Frodo can’t make it without Samwise. Being the guy that makes the big hit it is nice but not the only thing that matters! A paladin support is a cool build too!
How much value are you finding in the javelin's slow mastery? I think I would've gravitated to a switch-warhammer mastery for situations where pushing is valuable.
Hey Chris, just wondering how come you don't use the optional rules for origin feats where you can change what the feat/ASI's are, like you did back when Tasha's came out? Now, I don't think it is a specific rule in the 2024 PHB, but it does mention if you use an old background, you can customize it in this way.
@ makes sense, thanks for clarifying! Will you be doing the same for future build videos if you make them (assuming they aren’t for a campaign you are in)?
Don't mind me, I'm just here waiting for the updated D&D24 Wizard build... Yeah, I know that the class is almost unchanged. But the spell list has changed quite a bit. Edit: congrats on 100k subscribers!
If Tides of Chaos refreshed on any spell, and not just Sorcerer spell, I'd say three levels for Wild Magic Sorceror. Not just to sneak in Shield,. Glamour's Mantle of Inspiration would be protective, but the goal isn't to out shine the Searing Smite..
@@Psuedo-Nim As fun as it would be, there is very good reason why smites can't do that. Paladin already has a problem where every other Charisma caster can use their smites better than them. Bards, Sorcerers, and Warlocks can already smite harder due to faster spell slot level progression, and Bards and Sorcerers can smite more often due to getting more spell slots. If Tides of Chaos could be refreshed with non-Sorcerer spells, then suddenly it becomes very difficult to justify going more than 6 levels into Paladin in games that go into tiers 3 and 4. Because Paladin 6/Wild Magic Sorcerer 3 would hypothetically be able to grant themselves advantage on their attack roll through Tides of Chaos, increasing their chance to hit and crit, then immediately smite on the same turn to both refresh Tides of Chaos and automatically trigger a Wild Magic Surge, and then do it all again next round. And as the game progresses in level, the problem gets even more out of control as the Paladin/Sorcerer gets more spell slots and higher level spell slots at a faster rate alongside their other Sorcerer features. The higher level Paladin features can't compete with that, so for the health of the game there has to be that restriction to Tides of Chaos.
"A gold dragonborn paladin in golden armor"... so sticks out like a sore thumb and can't access any city (especially not via a port full of poor workers) without being swarmed by a thousand beggars. While i love your character builds, i would challenge that concept and your oaths as a DM xD
Then there is the story of Tertius, the Dragonborn no one wants to admit knowing. He deliberately chose to be a fighter, and added 2014 Purple Dragon Knight. He then took magic initiate, to learn 2014 True Strike.

now I'm curious. inquiring minds want to know

Yes, they still double.
the second banana energy makes me giggle.
I'm curious, for a ranged option, why javelin over trident? I would have thought topple would make trident more useful as a ranged option
I don't like topple with ranged attacks. Prone provides your target defense.
Would it be worth it to dip into warlock for pact of the blade considering how high your charisma is?
My Str is at least as high as my Cha until level 12. Maybe after that.
