All we have on TV now is continuous re-runs of the BB Theory. 60s and 70s TV was awesome.

Interesting how civil and cordial these folks are. Today topics such as China, Oil, Gas, Mining, Political Strategy, PM's Philosophical leanings, CBC budget, Russian censorship, NDP/ Liberal collaboration are still forefront issues.

I'm pretty certain that this episode actually dates back to 1974, based on the various issues and people being discussed - especially the speculation about an upcoming election. Pierre Trudeau headed a minority govt. between 1972 and 1974, with support from the NDP , which was then led by David Lewis (he's mentioned at one point in the broadcast). Trudeau won a majority govt. in the 1974 election, and soon after David Lewis quit as NDP leader. Also, there are references in the broadcast to China and to premier Chou En-lai - by 1976, both Chou and Mao Zedong were dead. So I would guess that this show was taped and aired sometime in the first half of 1974.

At the beginning of the clip Fred Davis congratulates WO Mitchell on becoming writer in residence at the University of Toronto. I looked it up and his appointment ran from 1973-74, so your dating of the episode is correct.

@@The4preston Yes 1974 because Ed Broadbent was federal NDP leader in 1976.

@Andreas Goldfus, it's actually 1974. That was when there was a minority government and the NDP under David Lewis supported P.E.T.'s Liberal government. Two other clues. _The National Dream_ was aired on CBC TV during winter 1974, and Trudeau mentioned he watched it. Final item, W.O. Mitchell was the Writer in Residence at Massey College, University of Toronto, from September 1973 to May 1974. In the program it mentions he's the Writer in Residence at UofT. Please change the title to the correct year.

Only problem is that was the year the CBC gave on that clip.

Well, it's also an indication of how closely tied the CBC was and still is, to the government, that it's not a news broadcast but a Prime-Time Entertainment Show that normally a serving Primeminister wouldn't be on. Do journalists still travel on the same flights as Politicians on foreign goodwill trips?. Also, the Trudeau family itself has social ties to the Chinese government going back decades which makes the current investigation into election meddling all the more interesting.

Serious people were routinely guests on Front Page Challenge, from across the political spectrum. And the interview portion always included serious questions about serious topics. This wasn't The Daily Show or the like. (Also it's much more the Castro regime in Cuba that the Trudeaus have been in bed with. Sometimes literally.)
