- VPRO Vrije Geluiden and 3voor12 invited A-WA to do a session during Into the Great Wide Open 2016.
A-WA (pronounced Ay-wa) is a band formed by 3 sisters: Tair, Liron & Tagel Haim. who grew up in the small desert village of 'Shaharut' in the southern Israeli Arava Valley.
With unique magical voices and lots of natural groove, the sisters combine Yemenite folk singing with electronic dance music.

Thanks for your music. I m listening to this concert since 3 years, and it lead me through so many difficulties I can t explain. I dont understand the lyrics, but, sadly..., but the first two Songs always remind me, who we as human beings are supposed to be. I love you all my brothers and sisters in this world.

In the ancient Jewish Biblical tradition, the kidney is the seat of the mind, the heart of emotions.
Sorry but this song has nothing to do with Jewish Biblical tradition. It is a Yemenite Arabic song. I know the singers are Yemenite Jews but to understand their songs you will need to think in terms of Arabic Yemenite tradition -- not Jewish tradition. The word used was "alkabd" which means "liver" in Arabic -- not kidney. Arabs in Arabian Peninsula reference the heart to express love just like most of the world but they also reference the liver to express emotions. In this particular song the phrase was "love is a red fire burning the liver" which means that she is experiencing an intense emotion (love) that feels like an intense fire burning through her own liver -- intense pain of love. Interestingly Arabs of the Levant do not reference the liver the same way.
By the way, the singers do have an accent with they sing in Arabic. For example, the way they pronounce Rohi which means "my soul" sounds more like Roohi which means "get away" in feminine form. Of course I do not have a problem understanding them based on the context.
In general, the song is about a girl who is madly in love with a man. She tells others to let him know that her soul is wrapped around him (the fact she wants others to give him the message suggests that either she is shy to express her love for him or he knows but he avoids her because he does not lover her.) The girl is in agony with intense emotion burning through her body (liver). She cries day and night and her tears never seem to stop. She can't eat or drink obsessed by the one she loves. Nothing seems to help even the best doctors can't find a medicine to ease her pain.
