I have a weird question(beginner animator). I love animation and seeing my finished work is one of the best feelings. But I`m don`t have this fiery passion to start working on animation and I need to press myself to start. Can this lack of "fire" to begin be attributed to my current 0 skill in animation? Like, when you get into it deeper, you`ll start ramping up? I`m in Animation mentor Maya's basics workshop currently. P.S. referring to a video. I fear to stuck at the beginning and not been able to get to a studio level and conscientiously not able to bring animation to people so to say.
Hey Soldier. This happens to all of us. If it is a continuous feeling, this just might not be for you, but if you're felling like that temporarily then power through it. I used to feel it quite a lot in the beginning and most of it came from me putting too much pressure on myself instead of enjoying the journey and being creative. Remember you are doing this for yourself and nobody else.
From my experience... find something small, like a punch (literally 20 frames), open maya and just relax, and do main poses from that punch, like 3 poses... Do that next day with something new eg kick it's a bit longer require more posing but still make few key poses... do that every day. it's ok, don't blame yourself for not animating 8h a day. You might think "wait, that's nothing like 15 min and done?"... yes but 15 min of doing something is more than 60 min of thinking about doing something. After a while you will break that initial "starting barrier" and you get into the flow or should I say routine. What I did was more like "15 min challenge" I took 1 action, had prepared file with empty scene and rig and with clock running I did as much as I could in 15 min, slowly increasing length until I stop counting time and just animated freely. Also if you have animation friends do it together and then do feedback round. PS. render all animations and keep them, you might not see it now but progress is made and you will laugh at your dorky anims later.
Hi great video. I have a web series myself, but am a little confused on how you can know this is meant to be more then a hobby? I really love doing the show but I’m unsure if this is meant to be more or not.
Hey there. it really depends on how invested you are and most importantly you need to do it for fun. The way I think about it is, “I would do this even if I didn’t have a big audience as it’s good material for future animators” As long as you keep that in mind you’ll have no problem. Also trying to preview how the future will look like or having an idea of what you’d want it’s the easiest way to be disappointed with your progress, take it one day at a time as in reality that’s all you can do.
Really interesting video H. Animation is definitely a vocation and outside of the industry some people will never understand the creative urge. They don’t understand the urge to create outside of the “ job role”. It’s like a strange addiction as a itch that needs to be scratched. I gotta be honest though, As someone who is animating 20 yrs now, I Don’t have the time/ energy to be as proactive outside the work role/ daily tasks. It’s important to maintain that work/ life balance. Especially in these current times. I’m waffling now but keep up these great important topics man!! Amazing and inspiring stuff!!
Hey Gary, such a pleasure to see your comment on my videos brother. Thanks a million. And you're right work/life balance is essential. Family is the VERY most important thing in life and ultimately what remains. Keep strong man
That's exactly my approach but as a comic book artist. I work on freelance projects for publishers and dedicate my spare time (NOT during crunch periods) to developing my own IP. I hone my skills by giving my best for my clients as I'm paid for that, then use my "leveled skills" on my creator-owned project. But... I confess... I'm making some animation here and there for my own ad campaign. And I liked it. Then I made it my hobby with full passion. Before that, I used to make some pretty awful little games as a hobby. XD
I really want to do animation as a career. I make stop motion short films and I am interested in drawing. But I'm a little stressed because I have a year to college and I haven't done much about computer animation or modeling. My family is related to this industry, but I feel backward. What would you suggest I do to improve myself before going to university? Do I overestimate computer programs or do I need to learn urgently?
Hey D...great question and what I would do is really hone in the basics of animation. Even if you do it in stop motion it's all animation, the medium you use to animate is just buttong you need to press to make it happen. Go through every chapter of Richard Williams animation book and try to really understand each of the 12 principles. It doesn't hurt to setup a computer and get yourself familiar with Maya or Blender and see how they work and what buttons you need to push in order to make the same animations you do in stop motion. Once it clicks you realize it's all the same, just different mediums. I hope that helps
Thank you. You put some good life tips in there too. I’ve been wanting to get into animation as a hobby, but it’s very intimidating to me cuz I’ve never done it before. I’m really only good at video editing, so I’m gonna try animation out thanks to your vid. Keep up the great content bro 👍
Glad the advice was useful. Please do give it a try. It’s hard very hard, specially in comparison to video editing. But in the long run, so much fulfilling. best of luck in your animation journey.
Its funny how i can relate to this so much. Its my first year in animation and i started of so excited like literally animation was my life all day everyday. I obsessed so much cause i love it so much. The thing is that wen i finished the year i feel like i drained out all creative energy because of all the hard work i put in. Now i am at a stable place were i love it but i keep my emotions more in check and dont let it demotivate me. Because i have realized that by obssesing so much it kind of killed my creativity by the end of the year. But once again i am enjoying it but at a stable pace. Has this been the case for any of you?
Hey Ja, yerp I can relate too. Getting that perfect middle ground it's though when you get started. As you get older and more experienced it will become second nature and you no longer think about it. But it will take a while. Thanks for sharing.
Omg thank you that was so inspiring. I did a degree in music and have my own music featured around the media, but I've never been in a professional environment continuously under an employer, under than my internship which I did in Prime Focus World, mixing audio for Bollywood movies back in 2013. I'm thinking of getting a masters or perhaps another bachelors in design or animation, which are my two other fascinations in the creative world. I also make RUclips videos and I find that when I disregard the outcome of the video, and whether the audience will "like it"... I get more creative and get even more into my soul purpose, flowers and dragons and all. LOL. I even fuse multiple topics into the same video. I'm not sure where I'm headed next in the creative world, but I'm excited.
Thanks for the great comment Zephyr, and yes I found the same when I make content for myself that I’m happy with it ends up being the best content. And best of luck in your journey. Having fun through it all it’s absolutely the most important factor. Keep in touch.
That's a great way forward, I didn't know at the time but I also was pursuing having my own company and now that I have it's the best thing I've done. Couldn't be happier.
This was an interesting video. Back when I was a senior in high school I joined an animation class. I really liked it and learning about the skills of animation was fun. But this was the me in high school. I procrastinated because having everything I was interested in being counted as a grade stressed me out a bit. Second semester was right when the pandemic started. School was cancelled which was a disappointment. We were gonna do a big project for that class. After that summer I decided on what I wanted to do with my life studying mechanical engineering and learning HVAC skills. Two years later to right now I want to get back into it. I decided to maybe take it as a hobby because I already have a set profession I'm already passionate about. Should I still want to get into animation even though I already want to do something else with my life?
Hey Cure...if you already found your passion and you are content then seeing Animation as a hobby is the way to go. But if there's anything inside of you still telling you that you'd like to pursue it, then do it by all means so you don't have that fear of missing out. ;) Hope this helps.

Almost every animator that I follow or know, usually animates in his own projects after work, so they can keep creative and exploring new ideas.
Yerp Aaron...most of the animators I know that are happy and fulfilled is because that do something on the side. Super important for motivation.

Oddly enough, drawing started out as a hobby since I was a kid but now I choose to go out of my way to start my own future company someday instead.
