This is a masterpiece of Progressive Rock! A great example of Swedish Prog scene! Excellent in all terms! Great production too. Anglagard thanks for your music!
I've got one for you that fits that description: Try "Goddess of Darkness" by Ars Nova. It's an all-instrumental album that sounds like ELP's "Barbarian" all the way through. Keyboards, bass and drums played by 3 Japanese women. It's "dark" without sounding too sinister. Very cool. You can get it fairly cheap at Discogs: www.discogs.com/Ars-Nova-The-Goddess-Of-Darkness/release/560603
If you guys haven't checked it out yet, they JUST released a brand new album this month, 18 years since their previous release (Epilog). It's called Viljans Oga. The album is 4 tracks, the shortest of them being 12 minutes long.
All three of their studio albums are masterpieces IMO. The writing within this group is just so absolutely amazing. The way their compositions develop is on par with some classical masters, and that is the highest compliment a "rock" band could receive. I hope we are lucky enough to hear new music at some point from this band. Please also check out Mattias' amazing band called Necromonkey - very very different from this music - but has that Scandinavian flair and is absolute top shelf as well. Cheers from NY.
20 years from the release date and I'm hearing it for the fist time - what the %@ !! Well, at least I finally "discovered" this music. I'm a looooong time Genesis & Yes fan, so this is music to my ears !! Thanks for posting.
I like to think that this and Anekdoten ("Vemod") sparked a revival in the 90s that kept classic prog alive while it was being reinvented and combined with postrock.
Anglagaard is the finest of Port wines from the Douro region in Portugal. Sex pistols is the shipping gift that Baldrick brought to Sir Walter Raleigh and Melchett.
Example: Yes, as you know is one of the most recognized prog-bands. I think they sound like they try to hard all the time. Pink Floyd is more mellow and relaxing, I can agree. Änglagård started in the 90s in Sweden when it was extremely unpopular with prog. You think they cared about that? They wanted to play what they loved and they recorded what imo is 2 of the best prog albums ever made. Extremely talented, so much feeling in all their songs, sounds like no other band.
I'm not sure if what you call "trying too hard" isn't just that they have a higher tolerance for dissonance and abrupt change. You could call them Nordic savages for this -- they certainly don't have the smooth edges of Floyd or Oldfield.
there's a point where better or worse doesn't exist anymore, it's not a competition you cannot shut yourself down to the new contributions to music, these artists don't and they try to generate something original and beautiful nobody will be like PinkFloyd nor better cause they're unique but there are many bands that are or attempt to be unique as well
Hello, does anyone know if the sequence starting at 6:15 was inspired by another song, maybe a popular swedish folk song? I have heard it somewhere else I swear, but I don't know where.
Absolutely brilliant... it's been a while since I looked for this CD. Anyone know if it's in print? It's the kind of music you wish was more prevalent, more available (even among the current prog bands, tracks THIS great are few and far between!)
Don't waste your time on him, man... He's just one these random internet trollz having nothing better to do of their time than shitting on places where they know it will hurt people, and hoping they will react.
One of the most unique sounding song, all instrumental, but very tight and very good feel. Excellent prog song. All elements are very inspiring, the Hammond organ, the drums, the melletron, the guitar. I am a keyboardist myself having so much problems to learn this masterpiece. Please let me know if those geniuses are coming to Israel - my home.. This underrated af.
I don't know what makes you say that - I think this band is excellent. They combine elements both new and old to prog. While it's true that compared to the glorious days of Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes, Gentle Giant and others, they are not very good, comparing pretty much any prog band to the ones mentioned above is stupid. But as a band of its own right, it is excellent. Why look at the negative aspects when there are so many positive ones?
Nope, I can not agree with you. I think you haven't listened to it enough. How can you say that it's not natural? I can't say that all prog-bands from the 70s sounded "Natural", with most of them you can actually hear that they try really hard... but that doesn't mean that it's not good. Many of them also sound alike, Änglagård has an entirely different sound. The mix of classical, Swedish folk, 70s prog makes it sound like an amazingly mystic and evil mix that I've never heard in my life.
Like with most prog it's not something you usually like when you hear it for the first time. When someone recommends something I always try to listen a whole album, at least 2-3 times before I make any opinion of weather it's good or bad.
Not trained enough and nobody cares, you don't have to prove anything. You should listen to more music and shut up. This is the first time I listen to this band and the music quality in every single level is terrific. BTW, you're giving a bad name to every Pink Floyd fan using that nickname and acting judgmental and arrogant.
This was my favorite song when I was 16, I'm 30 now. Still love it, and still have never met anyone else who likes this shit. It be like that sometimes

Of all the bands of the 90s that I've heard, this has got to be one of the best!
Selling Sweden by the krona
Street shitter
I agree that this album is on a similar level to sebtp
I can’t unlisten it now 😂
took me way too long to get this joke. I thought a band called The Krona made a song called Selling Sweden and was getting nowhere with google.
@@OakVolcano7858 on similar "sound" or "taste" maybe but not level of course. Very good album anyway.
Greetings from Turkey...
Masterpiece! Greetings from Istanbul!
swedish people are very luck to have this superb band and to listen their native language.
And I’m lucky to understand it as a Norwegian!
Sometimes it’s better not to understand the lyrics - like with PFM
Yes. I am lucky to understand the lyrics!
This is real good prog-music! Greetings from Italy
Ilove this album for the first time i hear it and still today
Great song from a great band, Sweden does have some incredible music.
I'm instantly impressed! This is exactly what I was looking for-something dark, but not too dark.

Yes it is, ranking up there with all the excellent 90's prog bands that came right out of your own back yard!
Love that -Mellotron- ( *update* : commenters correctly point out it is an organ) surge at 4:45 -- it says, "Prog is BACK!"
Back from where?

While I think the answer is "No", your thoughts may differ.

wrong. there is no "pinnacle" of progressive rock. since that is the complete opposite of progression
thank you sir

listen to more 90s prog revival, it's all cheesy nonsense that wishes it was ~one of the greats~
Clearly good players, but this lacks the compositional coherence of Yes or Genesis. We are fortunate to have lived in the time of those two giants.
Coherence, doesn't that simply mean its more accessible? I think their composition is awesome.
It's not really less coherent or less accessible. Look up "through-composition"; it's a very intentional choice and how they write all of their songs.
You shouldn't deserve even listening to Floyd.
Not trained enough and nobody cares, you don't have to prove anything. You should listen to more music and shut up.
