It's funny that you get that fortune as it makes me think about my own art journey and what I need to do as well. I am just now picking back up after a nearly 9 month hiatus...I was hating everything I was drawing...I'm transitioning to digital painting so it's another skill to learn and I need to remember what my initial goal was in the first place and not worry so much about how good everyone else it - that quote "comparison is the thief of joy." really hits when all you do is look at all the other work out there and look at your own and go...well....yeah. I suck. This all to say, I'm starting back up again because I want to enjoy the process and make headway to my initial goal and stop worrying about the fact I'm not where I want to be right this instant. I'll get there so long as I keep practicing and work at it. One day I'll look back and be like, dang I did that, and I used to do that? I've missed just doing art, so I feel I have some renewed vigor.
Thank you for talking this through, Wes. Artistically I'm experiencing these same thoughts and creative challenges. Hearing your words helps immensely. I find I have little interest in drawing themes/characters that once drove my creative passion. When I sit down to play I'm stumped on excitement to see something start to finish. Aimlessly skimming references or looking at other artists ends up draining the smallest spark of desire to create. However, it's a passing phase and we all catch our stride on inspiration again.
I think a lot of those things are important: bounced light, where does this go, etc. But, it's like special effects in film. You spend a lot of time getting it right so nobody notices it. In painting, it helps the viewer enjoy the pice as a whole rather than picking every little thing you "researched" to get it to look like that. Hope that makes sense!
I sense a change in you, man. Honestly, I don't know you except in the online sense but I do work with words and I do listen. For you, when I hear "Seek contentment" means in part "Do cool stuff." in terms of artistic temperament. As a person who likes working in teams, maybe it's "Working in the perfect team." Maybe you need to abandon being a ronin and find a daimyo. With your knowledge of the industry, and your background in corporate hierarchies maybe you're an art director. You apologised for these videos but for me they're your most compelling because I find myself asking myself similar questions. Subconsciously I suspect you already know what your contentment means. You just haven't fully realized it yet. For me my contentment is do cool stuff and watching these videos. Peace 🤘
