  • I'm very pleased to share with you my video of this little monster out of CR&R's Phelan yard in the high desert! Filmed in November of 2017, this is a 1991 WhiteGMC WXLL model outfitted with a mini Amrep MSL body. If you notice, this Amrep is not a "drop frame" like most of their other MSLs, making the hopper extremely high up for the operator. Luckily there weren't any manual bins on this route.

Full-featured rig with the rare “driver assist” package! Nice!

Nice one Eli! I hadn't seen an Amrep without a drop frame before but it definitely looks like there was good reason not many of were made. That route looks SUPER spread out but I'm glad you were able to get as much footage as you did!

Thank you! It certainly was a unique old truck. I'm still curious to know more about its origins if anybody has info. It was super hard getting footage, and there was other trucks I wanted to get to that day, so 6 minutes is better than nothing!

Well this is a very nice surprise I wasn’t expecting. Loved the classic rough looking route and the truck just looks so damn cool! Great work!

dang! what a nice catch! seems like the desert yards have some cool trucks!
seems like the hopper is a bit small tho, seeing how much the driver has to tip the cart

They certainly had some super cool equipment even up until just a few years ago! Hopper is definitely on the shallow side and is probably more suited for tossing bags than tipping full cans.

Looks like the chassis was modified by just a couple inches but not the full foot of “drop” that was standard with these trucks. Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, why go to the trouble of cutting up the frame if the hopper is still gonna be that high up? Might as well make it straight like Mountain Disposal’s trucks were.
In any case, very cool to see footage of this thing. Who knows what crazy life it had before ending up in Phelan

Thanks man, this whole truck is definitly weird the more you look at it. Practicality almost appears to be out of the question, unless if you consider this truck spent most of its life in rugged terrain and therefore a lack of clearance associated with a drop frame could have been an issue... although just a mile away in similar conditions they were running the ex-Burbank WhiteGMC Drop Frame MSL lol. It would be interesting to see the body taken off the chassis/find out what the reason originally was.
      Thanks for the comment!

Man what a beast she is! Do you know if this truck is still in use or is it retired?

These aren’t manual these are actually semi automatic
