Max Roach remembering this concert said that the previous evening he visited Braxton in his hotel and found him immersed in music sheets then he told him not to worry and ask him to come to have some coffee elsewhere. Max knew there was no need to rehearse because they were kindred spirits.
This is fantastic - these two great musicians are both abandoning devices and musical tools they each developed over the years and just jumping in and creating from scratch. And REALLY listening - I don’t know how I’ve missed this one over the years.

PART 2
CAL ARTS LECTURE
MAS Y MAS Y MAS
(CIRCA 1979)
Mr. Braxton walks into ROD,
(Roy O Disney concert hall @ CAL ARTS)
Looking like he usually did,
i.e.,
slightly disheveled,
with one of his cardigans
with as many dozens of records he can
possibly carry under one arm,
slaps them on the record player
which was housed in a rolling cabinet
and he begins to share his thoughts on EVERYTHING
you could possibly imagine
Music
Astronomy
Instruments
Mythology
Philosophy
Theories
Theorems
Data
etc., etc., etc.,
All held together by his (amazing) thought process
even though he is jumping all over the place
playing select excerpts from the records he brought with him
he might play 45 seconds of a Jelly Roll Morton record,
STOP
then play 45 seconds of a piece by Webern,
STOP
then play 45 seconds of a piece by Lennie Tristano
STOP
then play 45 seconds of a piece by Mulligan/Baker quartet
STOP
All the while LISTENING INTENTLY
while each piece was being played
and then discussing each person’s
LIFE”s WORK and contribution to MUSIC
as well as mythology, astronomy etc.,
while grabbing the next record
He also discussed parameters for improvisation
and trying to get “the player”
to leave his instrument and play MUSIC
Instead of “playing” the instrument
(Info that would be greatly articulated in
FORCES IN MOTION a few years later - 1985)
STOP
He glances at his watch
90 minutes have passed
and he asks if there are any questions
At first
SILENCE
Then ……………. the questions begin
Some are inquisitive
Some are dismissive
Some are acknowledging
Some are rude
Some are inspired
Some are confused
at one point,
after a particularly dismissive question
by a participant,
BRAXTON stated
“I am not suggesting we eat Twinkies
and walk barefoot thru the water....”
finally someone asks
“A duo recording just came out with Max Roach.
did you explain or express your theories and theorems
of improvisation to him In order to better understand
what you wanted from him?”
Mr. Braxton pauses,
puts everything down,
as there are now countless records no longer
in their sleeves but strewn all over the cabinet
he quietly walks in front of the cabinet
stares at the person who asked the question in the audience
clasps his hands in front of him and in a gentle voice says
“I did not need to say anything to Mr. Roach”
he then walked back to the back of the cabinet and started shuffling the records
back into their sleeves………
Amazing
This is really exceptionally great duo playing. Both of them are really extending their range here. Thanks for posting this!
Seriously, this is incredible! Thanks!!
great
