No, if you asked the vast majority of DieHard James Brown fans they'll tell you prime and peak James was the NO mustache era, and his most influential timeline on music in general is from 1963 to 1974 imo. In the late 70s when this video was made he was copying people who were copying him he stopped being original and was trying to chase making hits.
Yep, his very being was rhythm and constructed his music with literally nothing more that the way his body felt the sound. An truly enlightened man. He moved the hips like he was fucking and made millions feel in contact with the god of groove.
Narrator: "From the earliest days, it became apparent that the feeling mattered more than the quality of the sound" Literally the first clip: *James being really particular about the quality of the sound*
They are sort of right, though. Most funk from those days, had a really raw quality about the recordings. Unlike a lot of today's music that is almost pristine sounding.
The quality of the sound wasn't bad, but it wasn't right to what he wanted. That is the distinction. So, feeling mattered more than quality of sound. He didn't want the quality of the sound to be worse or better, but he wanted it to sound different.
To see a master and Genius at work in the studio is very rare but fascinating to watch . Jb was always a great listener to everything around him . Hence why he could create such amazing spontaneous moments from himself and the band .
I really wish they had footage of him in the studio with his late sixties band The James Brown Band/The James Brown Orchestra and his early to mid 70s band The JB's. This is very cool and insightful though.
My wife and I saw Mr. Brown at the Hollywood Bowl, Featured with Mr. Louis Bellson (Drummer), featured on the bill, was Ms. Angie Stone, who was the opening act. Unfortunately a few months later, Mr. Brown passed from a bout of Pneumonia. Rest In Power Mr. Brown.
Wooooooooo!!!! Soul Brother #1 doin' his thing and doin' it well!!!! I love this man!!!! Thank you so much for uploading/sharing this gem with us! 💎 🙌 👑
Great footage, I have to track down this documentary. The way he interacts with the band and listens, knowing exactly what he wants. edit: Ah, the doc is here on YT.
Something about JB and Rickey Henderson and their personna and the way they carry themselves...Same type of swagger..They have a lil of eachother in both of them...lol

I was thinking the same thing. 😆 James complaining about not hearing those drums snap sure sounded like he was fishing for quality.

@@joshuahoman1184 1975 is when things changed. The best funk was laid down before then.
Ahhh 1978. Human-produced realtime. MIDI and automation still 6 years away in '78. All Black music at that time was sublime. Believe it!!

JB is putting everyone to task. 🙆🏻♂️
Who are the personnel playing here?
It’s hard to tell. I’m only familiar to James Brown’s personnel from 1965-1970, 1970-1971, 1971-1975 and 1975-1979. But the studio footage, idk...
Studio on drums is Tony Cook.
Please tell me when this release

Who are the studio musicians that are featured in this?
How do I watch his Oklahoma performance in full?
