“Can she be a little kid again?” Years - I’ve been watching this movie since it came out, TBR, and never ever came up with that plot twist. That would have been very interesting!
I’ve always thought of that but then wondered where she would live lol. Would she be in foster care ? Live with Josh ? I always wanted her to go with him but that point always makes me think it could never happen ☹️
That was the original ending, but test audiences didn't like it so that part was taken out. It makes sense because Susan would still be an adult but in a child's body, and they couldn't have the same relationship as before.

Funny. Us 80s kids never saw the age issue like the younger generation. Seems they can’t get passed the age thing not realizing he’s technically 30 years old physically but emotionally a 13 yo. It’s unfortunate to be so conditioned to feel uncomfortable. One of the best aspects of this film is how Tom Hanks nailed being 13 so well. Pure genius.
There's really nothing wrong with that. As an early 90s kid who grew up watching this movie back then on vhs, even if she had to wait for him to "grow up" to a legal age in 5 years time he would have been 18 anyway so they could wait to be together.
Great points all around guys. I haven't seen Big in many years, but I agree that if I watched it now as a 37-year-old dad that I'd probably have a very different outlook on all the very adult things happening sort of in the background, but still super dangerous (like that downtown motel). Also, one thing on the $187 he got for his first paycheck, that amount of money in 1988 would give you the purchasing power of about $500 today. Keep in mind too that 500 bucks back then could buy a lot more than 500 bucks today
It's a story-telling masterpiece, is my opinion. What is missing, of course, is the police search - Josh's friend being interviewed by a detective, news items on the TV, mom being interviewed on TV, all this stuff. But some of the comedy - *"OK. But I'm gonna be on top." "I'm 13!" "Oh, isn't everyone!" "What's a marketing report?" "Exactly!"* is just fabulously innocent, and alongside the underlying theme of age and innocence, youth vs adulthood, charm vs. competitiveness makes it a great movie.
There's not enough time to show that. That's where his photo on the back of the milk carton comes in. And like TBR said, it would change the tone of the movie.
@@leemires5315 I didn't intend to criticise the storytelling in the movie, only to point out that these things have to be left out otherwise, as you pointed out, the tone will be completely different. I conclude you didn't read my first sentence, that it is my opinion that this movie is a "storytelling masterpiece"?
It's fun to watch this as a kid and then again as adult. The juxtapostion of adult life and a child's life is what makes this movie timeless. They both are trying to reach the same thing. Simple joy's. Or better yet just an appreciation of living in the moment.
It may well be the best performance I’ve ever seen in the genre of children being transported into adult bodies-but I should point out, it depended on good writing as well.
Aww man this movie STILL puts a smile on my face. I'm un my 40's so I seen this when it came out. Tom Hanks was awesome in this. I've been a fan since "Bosom buddies" only old heads remember that show!😂😂😂😂
For over 20 years I was sure that I had seen an alternate ending where young Josh is sitting in his classroom at school when he turns around to notice a young female classmate of whom who he recognizes as Susan - who went back to the fairground machine and wished that she was Josh's age. It turns out the whole time I was remembering the ending of a direct to TV movie which had almost the exact same plot; 14 going on 30 1988
I would love to see someone finally react to that one. A bit of a slow build, but the last half of the movie is absolute insanity. This is the one I love to recommend to people who are young enough that all they know is "dramatic, respected cultural icon Tom Hanks".
24:33 - Duuuude, you're so right! I never thought of that.... well, Millie Bobby Brown wasn't even born yet when I saw BIG back in the day, LOL... But you're right, Millie Bobby Brown does strongly resemble Elizabeth Perkins A LOT!
Definitely one Daniel had to see at least once in his life, I think he took some good thoughts from it. Thanks for watching it, you two. ♥ Ack, I can't believe those spoil sports took Saving Private Ryan down, I only wrote to the studios yesterday, lamenting their poor marketing of flop films I never even heard of until after they bombed and suggesting they work with popular movie reactors to get free promotion for new movies in exchange for not harassing their fair use clips with monetizing, blocking or striking their vids, a win-win. Never hurts to float an idea even if it goes nowhere.
24:32 That's Joan Cusack, incredible character actor & comedian in her own right, in addition to being John Cusack's sister. Joan is on par with Catherine O'Hara & Andrea Martin for comedic chops, but she mainly plays sidekick & sibling types of roles along with a LOT of voice acting. The Cusacks are from an acting family that also has roots in improv. theatre.
This was easily one of my favorite movies during childhood. The Zoltar machine always gave me chills. The idea of playing with toys as a job seemed like the coolest thing ever! I remember wishing I could play that computer game that Josh had. A perfect 80s nostalgia movie to me.
This a great, if weird classic that has a sincere wholesome spirit it works to keep despite certain romantic sotuations that occur, and I loved seeing this again. I never looked at the parent side too much when I saw this as a teen, but it is clear as you both said that it must have torn the mother up badly.
Hi Sam& TBR This is one of my favorite Tom Hanks movies and your reactions and comments for BIG add a lot to enjoy here . The storyline is heart warming and heart wrenching both in different moments . This movie for me instills the importance of Not growing up to soon or giving childhood up for what may seem bigger and better changes . For me this movie just makes me cherish the childhood I got to have even more before my parents died ; it is a good feeling to have to remember when I watched this with my mom . I am really glad that you both enjoy BIG and I hope your child/ children will enjoy this as much when they see it with you both. There really is nothing worth giving those moments up for . Thank you both for this reaction
Well played hehehe. As much as Tom Hanks has a breadth of ability in character arcs, at the start of his career he was always perfect at bringing childlike wonder to life. Never lose your joy.
My mom took me to FAO Schwartz a few times when I was a kid. It was a paradise especially when it was set up for Christmas. Enormous LEGO sculptures (long before LEGO stores existed) model train setups, and some toys for rich kids only but you could play with them in the store. I stopped by last year for the first time in decades and it was mostly quad-copters and other toys for grown-ups. The huge open space was divided into floors with low ceilings. No magic.
14:50 the store was F-A-O Schwarz - my grandma used to take me there when I was a kid - it was a famous toy store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan that let you play with the toys to try them out before you buy them - 'Duncan's Toy Chest' from 'Home Alone 2 Lost in NY' was based on it and it also appears in the 1999 version of 'Annie', and is referenced in 'Toy Story 3' with the line "Oh F-A-O my Schwarz". - they were around for about 150 years but went out of business in 2004 but got bought out by Toys R Us in 2009 who reopened it in but closed it again in 2015 when they went out of business - another company bought the brand and reopened it again in 30 Rockefeller Plaza in 2018 and also opened locations in Chicago, Beijing, London and Dublin - it's definitely worth checking out if you're in NYC - they have the Walking Piano that Tom Hanks & Robert Loggia use in the movie 'Big'
Great reaction, guys! I'm glad you enjoyed it as I definitely did. I am a huge Tom Hanks fan too, as well as a former professional pilot who would LOVE to see you react to "Sully" if you haven't seen it already. It's about the "Miracle on the Hudson" and they did an amazing job of telling and depicting the story in detail from all perspectives. Peace & Love, Y'all!
Early Tom Hanks you must watch: Splash (1984), Batchelor Party (1984), The Man With One Red Shoe (1985), Volunteers (1985) and The Money Pit (1986) These are all comedies. Mostly his beginnings in acting were comedy roles. He did one serious movie in 1986, then went back into comedies, progressed into romantic comedies. He branched out again in Philadelphia (1993) and received such praise (and his first Best Actor Academy Award) for a very serious drama and followed it with Forest Gump (his second Best Actor Acadamy Award in a back to back year as well) that no one ever doubted his range as an actor ever again. He still did some comedies after but started taking more and more dramatic roles the rest of his career.
I have a suggestion for a film for you to react to: FRAILTY (2001), a very good and underrated thriller, with a great performance by Bill Paxton and a surprising ending, you'll love it

I remember not being able to get on rides fairgrounds because until I was almost a teenager, I was too short
U guys are the GOAT of movie reaction couples.
Such a great movie! Awesome reaction as always
As a kid growing up in the eighties this is one my favorite movies of all time
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how good Tom Hanks is? You can forget he's 30 years old in this.
It may well be the best performance I’ve ever seen in the genre of children being transported into adult bodies-but I should point out, it depended on good writing as well.
I was 12 when this came out and I’m glad I saw it at that age. As an adult and a parent, this movie hits so differently. Great reaction
🙄
Aww man this movie STILL puts a smile on my face. I'm un my 40's so I seen this when it came out. Tom Hanks was awesome in this. I've been a fan since "Bosom buddies" only old heads remember that show!😂😂😂😂
I lived next to Josh's home for 5 years. It's in Cliffside Park, NJ.
For over 20 years I was sure that I had seen an alternate ending where young Josh is sitting in his classroom at school when he turns around to notice a young female classmate of whom who he recognizes as Susan - who went back to the fairground machine and wished that she was Josh's age. It turns out the whole time I was remembering the ending of a direct to TV movie which had almost the exact same plot; 14 going on 30 1988
😮 I lost a bet because of that 😂! That was also the “alternate” ending I remembered
@@hendrikbareno7426 HaHa Hope it didn't cost you too much.
I remember this too, but I’ve looked everywhere for this and can’t find it.
Bachelor Party is an early Tom Hanks comedy that should be on your list.
Always enjoy your reactions.
That poor donkey......
I would love to see someone finally react to that one. A bit of a slow build, but the last half of the movie is absolute insanity.
This is the one I love to recommend to people who are young enough that all they know is "dramatic, respected cultural icon Tom Hanks".
HEY ITS MR. LAUGHS!
The piano from this movie is now at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, PA. It's a museum for kids to play with everything.
Hope you like it!!!
One of my favorites!!
He does such a good job acting like a kid !!
24:33 - Duuuude, you're so right! I never thought of that.... well, Millie Bobby Brown wasn't even born yet when I saw BIG back in the day, LOL... But you're right, Millie Bobby Brown does strongly resemble Elizabeth Perkins A LOT!
You gotta check out Tom Hank's greatest hit! BACHELOR PARTY (1984). Check out The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951).
I thought the Schmitt was going to hit the fan when TBR said "If only he was BIG..."
Imagine if this same romance happened between a 12yr old girl who turned BIG and an older man? I don't think it would go over as well haha
I felt something TBR, and Sam when y'all said that about Josh missing out on the girl, and so on. Me I felt the same.
Sam’s a child at heart & I’m here for it ❤
Definitely one Daniel had to see at least once in his life, I think he took some good thoughts from it. Thanks for watching it, you two. ♥
Ack, I can't believe those spoil sports took Saving Private Ryan down, I only wrote to the studios yesterday, lamenting their poor marketing of flop films I never even heard of until after they bombed and suggesting they work with popular movie reactors to get free promotion for new movies in exchange for not harassing their fair use clips with monetizing, blocking or striking their vids, a win-win.
The Cusacks are from an acting family that also has roots in improv. theatre.
That’s Elizabeth Perkins.
Hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
This is such a classic. So glad you guys reacted to it. Another classic movie I would love to see you guys react to is The Toy starring Richaed Pryor.
Love the little switch-up on the intro! 😂 You guys are fun 👍
This was such a great summer for movies,it seemed like every week there was a classic
No magic.
Many thanks to TBR and Samantha! 🎹 I love this one so much. Kudos to director Penny Marshall, may she rest in peace.
Daniel was on a roll in this one. "You won't be out of prison in 10 years."
Hanks' first Oscar nomination. Also Josh's hometown was shot in Cliffside Park, NJ - 15 min. from where I live :D
Does anyone else love it when Sam takes the lead??
Mami is allways on top
You totally have to watch "Splash" and "Bachelor Party"! Young Tom Hanks comedies from the 80s were the best. Also throw in "Weekend At Bernie's".
Tom Hanks in Joe vs the Volcano 🌋 A movie I watched so many times in my childhood
I work in the toy industry, and one thing people always ask me is "is working in the toy industry like being in the movie Big?"...
Is it?
@@TBRSchmitt Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.
Add Joe Vs. the Volcano to that list.
Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia" is absolutely one of his best acting roles.
Unfortunately not many reactors view it.
"Big" is early movie career Hanks.
This is what I came here to request.
@@taneshah.1260 "Great minds think alike" 😊
I have a suggestion for a film for you to react to: FRAILTY (2001), a very good and underrated thriller, with a great performance by Bill Paxton and a surprising ending, you'll love it
