I have been reading Pedro Páramo for over forty years in both Spanish and English. I am never bored with Páramo because it changes every time I read it. My wife’s family is from Sayula.
I just started to learn it in French, after reading Hundred years of solidarity, I think that in the end I will not read for a couple on months because the bothe are so special.
Great review! I read Pedro Páramo a couple of years ago after I heard Guillermo del Toro at a Q&A here in LA say that it’s a foundational influence on his work and life. I read the translation by Margaret Sayers Peden, but now another one by Douglas J. Weatherford has come out that I want to read.
Carlos Fuentes introduced me to the novel. He wrote an essay comparing it to Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Bruce Chatwin's On the Black Hill. At the time I'd read Wuthering Heights, but not Chatwin's novel, but it was enough for me to find the book. I have it next to Aura, La Invencion de Morel, and Las Batallas del Desierto. Garcia Marquez read it, along with Kafka's Metamorphosis, and both had a profound impact on his writing. I've been re-reading some of his short stories, along with Alberto Breccia's interpretations of one of his stories. A masterpiece.

Ancora usano l'antico sistema cristiano delle retrospettive speculari. Che pero' non e' infinito perche' di infinito c'e' solo Dio e sua sostanza. Pedro Paramo narra della retrospettiva del messico che e' il mexico.
I think you gave very good advice on how to read it - I read it in one sitting and instantly regretted it! I felt like a lot of it went over my head & knew I'd only be able to make some sort of sense of it on a re-read but worry that I don't know enough about Mexico & it's history to fully appreciate it. You have definitely made me want to pick it up again though & I would welcome a deeper dive into it if you were planning on discussing it further...?

com'è in italiano? ho letto qualche dialogo tradotto dall'originale e suona un po' come uno spaghetti western . . . .
