The underestimation here is how a goalkeeper with good feet absolutely deflates pressing attackers. When he gets the ball, you can see there's no desire to try and close him down, cause he'll just make you run for nothing and then have to run back to cover the space you vacated. And when they tried closing him down, they failed and only created the space he wanted to pass into.
Onana is even higher level than (Alison/Ederson) in terms of dribbling and ball distribution. People say Onana dribble will have mistake and lead to fatal goal. I agree this is Onana full package, meaning that he has world class ball distribution skills, but he takes risk, and risk may lead to mistake. He will minimise the mistake.
Onana said in an interview “I take risk, and I know that. I am not prepared to make a mistake, but I know I will eventually make a mistake. If I make a mistake on Sunday, I still need to go to work on Monday. If I don’t take risk, I will not cause any pain. I receive the ball, and I make clearance, throw the ball away. But I will not help my team build up.”
In terms of his overall performance debut, it is a massive upgrade from DDG. I know DDG is world class shot shopper, but he stays at his goal line, never comes out to help, pass the ball to opponents, etc. With Onana debut, you can see his
1. Impeccable Ball dribbling
2. Great Mind games
3. Great Body acceleration
4. Great First Touch
5. Accurate Curve + Accurate Weight to each pass (comfortable for receiver)
Not just a CB-playing Goalkeeper, his ball distribution is Pirlo level (if you really watch football). Also when he pass the ball, he moves immediately to another open space location which gives the defender one extra passing option.
Numerical advantage, I trust all you football hardcore fans watch every MU game for the last few seasons. You understand when we are pressed at the back, we have basically no choice but to pass back to DDG, and then clearance which has no aim. And literally every PL team knows how bad DDG was with his feet.
Now, with Onana, no coach wants to press him, otherwise they will fall into Onana trap. Not only his distribution skills but because Onana has great vision, and can ping the ball 50 to 60metres (

I'm just happy that Man united players now know that they have a player at the back that can play the ball with confidence when a back pass is made to him...Onana make use of his both feet so perfectly that's a plus for that team...

Andre Onana is an upgrade over David DeGea in literally every single department and I genuinely cannot wait to see how his relationship develops with our defence over the season.

I’d agree if you’d said that he should be a bit more cautious with how far he comes out of his goal TO BEGIN WITH, but if we are ever going to move forward as a team, we have to play to his strengths.
Just look how much Liverpool and Man City improved once they had a ball playing goalkeeper with the license to come forward and join the defence, they’ve literally dominated the league for the past 6+ years.
Asking Onana to stay in his goal would be like asking Bruno Fernandes or Kevin De Bruyne not to create or make risky passes.
It's like we got an extra outfield player, who is allowed to use his hands!

The position I play is a defender and I can definitely appreciate a goal keeper like Onana's quality he actually takes alot of pressure off your entire back line & midfield especially when in hostel environments away from home at top clubs..👍🏽
It puts him Onana in danger of running out of stamina as a goal keeper if he always intend to play full matches, something he must be aware of.

His good with both foot, his a good passer... 98% will not want to press him. But one thing we did not notice is that how defenders are not getting him, although with time.. They will blend in together. I just love how he continue communicating with the back four 📍

You can see the difference. The back four are using him to play out the back at which he is very good at. Loved de gea in terms of his shot stopping and being a fantastic servant to the club but this could be a very smart move from Eric! Forget the result, it's just pretty season. Desperately need a striker though!

What I am wondering about is if we play so high, the opponent will have easier time defending their goal by staying close to their half 😅 we need to be highly efficient and clinical in creating chances and scoring, otherwise it seems counter productive to me

Well, there is only 1 ball, so if u keep possession u should be fine and with that system they are build around possession. Eventually the opposite team if they lose composure of continue defending they will get punished, also running after the ball takes more energy. The opposite team can stay in the back, that means their playfield is much smaller so if United loses possession they will put high pressure on the team quickly and looking for interceptions and mistakes by opposite team. It forces the other team to play long or to make risky combinations. The only downside is the counter, but you cant be perfect in every way.

Looks like teams are already reluctant to close Onana down. Which is why we should hopefully deal with teams press a lot better this season.

We get lost when we go to midfield to forward. Theres huge gaps in midfield. While opposition transitions our defense stays too narrow that gives oppositions wingers lots of space to run at us. Thats what Vini and Rodrygo they did yesterday.

It's been absolutely irrelevant - we need to SCORE not play keepy-up at the back. Still conceded 2 embarrassing goals and lost the game. I like his confidence but changing keepers is not - and never has been - the fix for our biggest issue.
I disagree with u. The kind of keeper u have makes a great difference. Man U simply need to sign good strikers to complete the package. Whats sense in having good strikers that scores and then u concede goals again without a good keeper?
@@graynyles7063 There is no single player fix for united. Onana can make good passes or endure a high press but that's irrelevant as we had a strong keeping record last season. De Gea is not a bad keeper - especially when it comes to shot stopping. We - as a team - have so many weak points. Buying a striker is also not an instant fix. Our defenders need composure, our midfielders need work rate and physicality and our forwards need decision making/intelligence. Each group needs to show some of each others core attributes as well to gel. Every time we underperform it's for one of these reasons - defensive mistake, outworked in the middle, strikers making bad decisions in the final third. Until we consistently do these basics we aren't going to seriously challenge. Onana will not change this.
The same will happen with premier league teams. After sometime they’ll give up the press. We can all see how teams targeted DDG
