I heard the Boston Symphony Orchestra premiere this in 1997. I remember something about him originally considering this to be his 3rd Symphony, although he must have changed his mind, it's not referred to as such anywhere.
I have to agree Paul, if you compare Dutilleux with Boulez it's chalk and cheese. Boulez was a world class conductor, Dutilleux was a world class composer. I rest my case :-)
Frankly I did not remember the name or any information about this artist, but searching for the image, I discovered that it is a painting dated 2002, written by the American artist Mark Kostabi, entitled "Marcel Duchamp en passant Mark Kostabi ( Swindle of the Century ").
Have to say I think Dutilleux is one of the greatest composers born in the 20 century. Every piece is worth hearing.
His output is smaller than many other major composers, but everything is SO WELL DONE!
I had the honor to attand to a performance of that piece in presence of the composr.
