Yes no ignition key steering lock the door handles, the double exhaust chrome tail pipes, reserve fuel lever roller accelerator pedal, some of the memorable old features of this car. Awsome.

It was my job (as a 9 year old) to go out on cold winter mornings in north Alabama and start my dad's 1964 beetle (6 volt) for him to drive to work at ABMA,Redstone Arsenal Alabama. A couple of times i wore down the battery & put my back against the front bumper (it was loose) & i pushed that VW up the driveway , then coast down, pop the clutch to start.

My parents had a 56 and it always started easily. This one has either a tired starter or dirty cable connections.

You can see why 6 volt was upgraded to 12 volt in cars. When cranking and especially when doing it cold, the voltage could drop down to 4 volts or even lower which really isn't much at all for the ignition coil to produce a decent spark for the plugs.

    • @priesermax

Yes, but most of the time the voltage drops is due to old wiring

My 56 Beetle sounded exactly like this until a 5 dollar solenoid was replaced for the starter. After that, even in 20 below zero temps, with modern multi grade oil, the engine easily started on the first try without the slow barely turning over of this one. Try replacing the solenoid, not the 6 volt electrics.

I had a very used '57 and it had the same cold weather starting problem. The Army sent me to the NATO HQ in Naples and there I bought a brand new '62 sunroof. Put 38K miles on it. Back in the states (Western Pennsylvania) it wouldn't start in cold weather to the point I had to park on a hill, drift, and kick the motor in. The local VW dealer claimed unable to solve the problem. Traded on a Triumph that started in all weather.

I restored my '57 about 13 years ago, took apart the starter and cleaned and lubricated and installed a new Optima 6 volt battery. Same battery still works great.
By the way my bug is the same Horizon Blue as yours but with a dark blue interior.
A brand new Lamborghini can be on the street and people will smile and wave at the Beetle, great fun.
