  • 2020 Africa Twin 1100 - I've been lucky enough to have been able to spend a week riding the new Africa Twin 1100 around the salty roads of Hampshire. Honda have thrown everything at this bike to bring it up to date but has it been successful?
One thing I didnt mention in this review is the price. The Adventure Sport I was riding in the video is £14,649 and the base model starts at £13,049.

@TriplePlay And I guess you've seen the base model R1250 GSA compared to the R1250 GSA you actually want? Please add a nicely equipped V-strom 650 on the base price on the BMW. I believe Honda have really added the need to have things as a standard on this bike.

Couple of things Mr Chops; You continue to confirm that you and 44 Teeth are the best on RUclips for reviews and personally I can't get excited about bike reviews! But you put so much effort in and the way you do this is great. Secondly and hope you don't mind but I mentioned you on my last vid upload with regards to how brilliant you are with the 360 edits, you have again just proven it. Great vid. Cheers.

Awesome review Mr Chops. Dammit, picked mine up 2 weeks ago and paid £700 for a quick shifter. The bike is amazing and you do get used to the electronics, although it has taken me this long to suss Apple CarPlay completely. 100bhp is ample especially when I have a 2014 1290 SDR in the garage with 50k miles on it. Keep up the great work, really enjoy these reviews.

As a R1200gs rider I have always admired the Africa Twin and this new model appears to fill in the gaps of the old one. And yes in Australia we do take our expensive big bikes off road . . . quite a lot!

Great Review Chops. Bought the previous 2019 from wheels a few months ago, cracking bike and deal. Delivered down south for only £99, If your viewers are worried about how far away they are don't be, the bike exceeded my expectations when it arrived.

I sold one of my fireblades and bought the Africa twin adventure sports 2020 fully speced out after demoing the gs 1250. This bike is as an all round package very capable. As always mr chops a great review. CarPlay is epic once you work it out. And Honda’s manual is shocking so you need to just play with it. Luckily I’m quite tech oriented so it didn’t stump me. The wealth of options is incredible. The pearlescent paint you are the only one to mention it. It’s superb.

Definitely in South Africa we take big adventure bikes off-road, all of the time. There are normally ride-outs every weekend. From what I hear it is the same in Australia and America. Those of us that do go off-road or 500+km on gravel in a day love the 21' front. Please Honda don't change that. We have waited long enough to for you to bring back the Africa Twin.

You can see the Honda-quality fit-and-finish in the paint and in the detail around the fuel tank, the gray fuel cap, and the anodized gold wheels and handlebars. That red-white-and-blue finish is fantastic. One thing that has stayed constant about Honda through the years is the attention to detail in the Design Department: Honda goes that extra bit of the way in order to design a motorcycle that will look nice for years to come. Look at the surviving CB 750 motorcycles for a clear example of the made-to-last Honda fit-and-finish.

I purchased the Africa twin over the KTM 890, 1290 & over the BMW 850 or 1250 cause the Honda name. The other bikes might have their pros but Honda has that build quality & reputation. I got the DCT transmission on mine. I love the bike, it's sooo nice 2 ride & DCT works good. Sport mode, level 1 or 2 is AWESOME.

Thanks 4 making the videos, It helped me make the choice i did & it's really appreciated👍👍 what's your favorite Enduro/adventure bike? I think I'll be riding mostly on highway roads once in awhile down the service roads but I don't see doing much off-roading with this big monster. It rides so effortlessly when it's moving but when it stopped it's hard to believe it's the same 🏍️ because it's so heavy to move 🤷 I think all of the bike manufacturers make something good that's unique in it's own way. But thanks again 4 making the videos! 😎

Just came across this video whilst researching my upgrade from a 2009 F800GS. (I used to have a 1998 RD07a AT) Great review but I must take issue on one thing that you dwelled upon. The 21 inch front wheel.
I bought my first bike in 1987, passed my test in ‘89 and EVERY bike I’ve owned has been a trail bike with 21” front wheels. I was a courier in Surrey/London for over 10 years using DR650/DR800(x3)/XRV750/XT660Z/F800GS 😍.......but went all over the country (did Glasgow and back on the 800GS in a day on 2 separate occasions).
21 inch wheels with the appropriate tyres do actually have plenty of grip (assuming the rider has the wit to read the road/conditions). There’s been a few times I’ve been cranked over on a tight corner inside foot out mx style and almost gone in to the back of a sports bike.
John Fogerty may have written that “Big wheels keep on turning “ but bigger wheels go over bumps, pot holes etc better!!

I agree rarely if ever are they taken off road in the UK too heavy and unwieldy. So it’s a shame you don’t get the 19” wheel as an option and maybe dispense with spokes at the same time. A few people on the V Strom forum have been eyeing this one up, but it’s no V twin sadly.

Chopsy, I've seen all your videos, and I've heard you gushing about many bikes, but to me you were smitten with this bike. It never seems to get the praise of the GS, the KTM SAS, the other crowd. Why is that? Is it just because it can't boast 150BHP??

No, you're dead right. Adventure bikes are the SUV/4WDs of the motorcycle world. People buy them for the comfort, prestige, height, carrying capacity and amenities, but rarely actually use the off-road potential. Hence why so many of them are really out and out sports tourers (especially the S1000XR and Multistrada). Nothing wrong with that, but personally I don't need or particularly like the off-road pretensions.

Seriously though, you do get a nice view (of the peasants)

Right BUT, bikes like this, or V Strom 1000, or Multi 950, or KTM 990 are also very good conmuters bikes, very good to get in and out of the city, and powerful and comfy enough for the highway.... .suppose you work in downtown, at 30-50 miles from home and want good weather protection, comfy riding, and power to go at 160-180 km/h. What kind of bike dou you get?

They've become the biking equivalent of the 4 wheel drive crowd who fit winches and big knob wheels, but rarely get further than Asda or the school run. I reckon 50 percent of alloy panniers have never left the county. It was all just a Ewan and Charlie pipe dream....

Feb 15 2021 in grim north Wales, I wonder if the quick shifter deal is still on? (Only just seen this vid) Another thing, so bloody lad you rode the manual version. First review I've seen that wasn't the dct.

The adventure croud like 21" front wheels because they make your bike ride and handle like a dirt bike. Kinda the point of an adventure bike. At least one that leans towards the off road end of the spectrum IMO

TOOO HEEEAAAVYYYY ! Not in comparison with the other motorcycles in that class of course . What is the point of heaving that much suspension travel if it is too heavy for off road ?

Calin Florin all that travel gives a plush ride on crappy California roads, at least my 2017 AT does!

For a parallel twin they sound good. These motorcycles along with the bmw1200 gs and the 1250gs sell like hot cake. Ride safe out there. @Lamb Chop Rides

Great Review, I m looking out for a comparison with tiger 900GT - 2020 AT, N Off the topic - How is your AX9 on the high speeds ? I own the same helmet but I find some knocking effect when on high speeds with the beak .

lets hope the build quality is better than my 2019 model. anodised bar end wear straight through and the engine finish was terrible, if you have one with the main stand take a look where the stand hits the frame when on the stand. my one had cut through the paint and the frame had started to rust!!!

Maybe I over-romanticize adventure riding, but enough electronics to make 4000 differently tailored riding modes sort of makes me think you're on a Gold Wing with 50/50 tires. All you need now is a stereo and a cup holder! It's still a beauty, but my preference runs more towards a KLR 650 or a Bullet.

Many saying that this kind of bikes are like desperate housewifes suburban SUV, pointless. The question is: if you work in dowtown, 30-50 miles from home, you want good weather protection, comfy riding, power to go at 140-180 km/h on the highway, have same space to leave the helmet on the bike and carry gym stuff and laptop, occasionally carry some chic returning home. What bike do you get? GS to big for dowtown, any RR for obvious reasons, naked had no weather protection nor space.. so... Vstrom 1000, Super Teneré, Multistrada 950, KTM 990, and this (with a 19 "wheel) looks like perfect....(and I have a Hayabusa and FJR 1300, which are really for long trips over the tarmac...)
