@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom For the Nikon F-mount, the Voigtlander may provide slightly warmer and richer colors than the Nikkor AIS. I own a new copy of the Nikkor AIS, which I will be using on a Nikon FM2A body. Because I will only be shooting black and white film with the Nikon, I don't feel a need to swap the Nikkor for the Voigtlander.

I had and compared the 2/28 pre-Ai, 2,8/28 Ai and 2,8/28 Ais. The sharpest up close is the Ais, no doubt, and your test confirms this. But at infinity the Ai and Ais are very hard to tell apart. The 2/28 noticeably more spherical abberation and coma even stopped down but I loved its character and rendering, never should habe parted with it! 😢

28mm is my favourite focal length. In terms of manual focus 28mm lenses, I have the Voigtlander 28mm pancake, as well as the Nikkor 28mm Ai-s, Nikkor 28mm Ai, and pre Ai. I've also found that the Voigtlander and the Ai-s perform equally well. Both of these lenses can focus as close as 0.22, which is closer than the other Nikkors. They both provide better sharpness and contrast. I find The Ai-s has a slight edge over the Voigtlander in terms of distortion but I haven't done any objective tests to confirm this, this just from shooting Architecture and looking at the lines. I like the focus throw and the feel of the focus most on the Ai-s, and on my copy at least the hard stop is exactly at infinity, which is so satisfying. On the flip side The voigtlander is more compact, and maybe has a hair more 3D pop than the Ai-s but that maybe due to different lighting conditions. Both the voigtlander and the Ai-s are far superior to the pre Ai and Ai versions. Normally the only difference between Ai and Ais is focus throw but these have completely different optics. Given that the voigtlander cost me £500 used and the Ai-s only set me back £180 used its crazy value for money. And definitely makes my top 3 best Nikkor manual lens list

So the takeaway from this once agin is that all these brand name lenses are a great choice unless you're pixel peeping, the canon ltm is the best all around in terms of sharpness bokeh and overall rendering with the addition of being better for black and white no to mention size..my friend loves his but i always thought it wouldn't be good enough being a wide angle of that era, this test proved me wrong.Keep them coming ..your last test helped me get over thinking a leica R 50mm summicron would be miles ahead of the nikon etc..now i'm definitely getting the 50mm f2 nikon.😊👍🏾

This is an unfair question around the preference as I think hardly any people had the chance to try all these and other 28mm options out there. I only tested the newer version of the Voigtlander 28/2.8 SLII Color Scopar. That is super impressive, sharp and versatile with a MFD of just 15cm at which it takes damn sharp shots with a remarkable DoF. Hence I can leave my superb but bulky macro lens at home when go for a hike and expect to grab shots of some small flower of bug without the need of focus bracketing. Of course, it does not replace a 1:1 macro lens, but helps when you need to grab a close up shot. Since from 1m-infinity it takes lens than 1cm on the lens barrel, the portrait to landscape shots need very little focus adjustments. On the other hand, the 1m to 15cm takes a lot of turn, enabling a very precise focusing for close ups. It is also very light and compact (unless you put a standard width UV filter on it that significantly increases the lens height).

I use the Elmarit Asph on M10 and M6 and find it perfect (punchy precise rendition, build, size/weight, ergonomics), EXCEPT it is f/2.8 and 0.7m, which makes noticeable differential focus effects a bit too difficult and is substantially less flexible in low light. I use the 28mm f/1.4E on Nikon D850 (now replaced by Z7) and Df, and that is also optically and ergonomically perfect EXCEPT for size/weight (balances very well on larger DSLRs though). Did you try that one? I am now looking at replacing the Elmarit Asph by the new Voigtlander 28mm f/2 VM that you seem to like so much (why did you return it?) hoping it might perform well also on the Z7. Not seen that combination tested yet. And then the new version of the 28mm SLII looks like a great companion for the Df and my old film bodies, less super thin than the version you tested, which for me implies better ergonomics.
