28mm is my favourite focal length. In terms of manual focus 28mm lenses, I have the Voigtlander 28mm pancake, as well as the Nikkor 28mm Ai-s, Nikkor 28mm Ai, and pre Ai. I've also found that the Voigtlander and the Ai-s perform equally well. Both of these lenses can focus as close as 0.22, which is closer than the other Nikkors. They both provide better sharpness and contrast. I find The Ai-s has a slight edge over the Voigtlander in terms of distortion but I haven't done any objective tests to confirm this, this just from shooting Architecture and looking at the lines. I like the focus throw and the feel of the focus most on the Ai-s, and on my copy at least the hard stop is exactly at infinity, which is so satisfying. On the flip side The voigtlander is more compact, and maybe has a hair more 3D pop than the Ai-s but that maybe due to different lighting conditions. Both the voigtlander and the Ai-s are far superior to the pre Ai and Ai versions. Normally the only difference between Ai and Ais is focus throw but these have completely different optics. Given that the voigtlander cost me £500 used and the Ai-s only set me back £180 used its crazy value for money. And definitely makes my top 3 best Nikkor manual lens list
So the takeaway from this once agin is that all these brand name lenses are a great choice unless you're pixel peeping, the canon ltm is the best all around in terms of sharpness bokeh and overall rendering with the addition of being better for black and white no to mention size..my friend loves his but i always thought it wouldn't be good enough being a wide angle of that era, this test proved me wrong.Keep them coming ..your last test helped me get over thinking a leica R 50mm summicron would be miles ahead of the nikon etc..now i'm definitely getting the 50mm f2 nikon.😊👍🏾
I'm really happy I bought the Canon 28mm f/2.8. Good color. Also got the old Canon 50mm f/1.4, also a nice lens. Both quite affordable. Used on an 8.2, 9 or 240. IR - UV on the 8.2.
My best 28mm is without a doubt the Zeiss Biogon 28mm f/2.8 on my Contax G2. It's noticeably better on film than my Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8. Sharper, more contrast and basically no distortion at all. I wonder how that Zeiss performs in M mount.
This is an unfair question around the preference as I think hardly any people had the chance to try all these and other 28mm options out there. I only tested the newer version of the Voigtlander 28/2.8 SLII Color Scopar. That is super impressive, sharp and versatile with a MFD of just 15cm at which it takes damn sharp shots with a remarkable DoF. Hence I can leave my superb but bulky macro lens at home when go for a hike and expect to grab shots of some small flower of bug without the need of focus bracketing. Of course, it does not replace a 1:1 macro lens, but helps when you need to grab a close up shot. Since from 1m-infinity it takes lens than 1cm on the lens barrel, the portrait to landscape shots need very little focus adjustments. On the other hand, the 1m to 15cm takes a lot of turn, enabling a very precise focusing for close ups. It is also very light and compact (unless you put a standard width UV filter on it that significantly increases the lens height).
Thank you Matt ! I do own the canon 28 LTM and it's brilliantly compact. Mine just doesn't seem anything like as sharp as your copy. Maybe I'll get it deep cleaned and see if it gets a little more crispy. Still eyeing off the new voigtlander I've got to say ! Thanks again
Love the tabs underneath the video to allow scrolling directly to the topic of interest. My focus in primary on M/LTM-mount lenses, so I directly jumped into these lens tests in your video. Thanks for doing the test!

One of the most important criteria that separates great lenses from others in corner sharpness. Thats what you should have tested was edge performance for sharpness, not center which is easier to achieve.
Thanks, yes for wides edge sharpness is importment. If I get the opportunity in the future I can try to do corner sharpness. (Normally I look at centre sharpness as I shoot portraits). Thanks
Hi Matt, I've a 28 series e nikon that I rate, it's the one with a chrome ring, I think that the quality of the plastic only earlier ones may not be as good because nikon got flak for them, just saying...
Hi Justin, thanks. I have the chrome ring and black 50 1.8 E series. See that Nikon 50mm test. They performed quite similar. E Series can still take nice pictures as you know too.
I have the 28 mm f/2.8 Voigtlaender for Nikon F and its an excellent little lens. The microcontrast, colour saturation, image rendition, sharpness is quite amazing. However, it is no longer available new (dont know why Cosina does this !) and I was lucky to get the last one from the online store I had got it from. I have also used it on a DX Nikon to do a fake 40 mm, and it also does the job well.
In Oktober 2021 voigtländer announce the new redesigned version of the lens it will have a aspherical lens element and it will look like a Nikkor Ais, price 529€
Nice review. I recently read a positive review of the Zeiss f2.8 28mm ZM Biogon, intended for Leica M mount. It focuses to 0.5 m and is very sharp. Its price, at around $700-880, seems very reasonable for a high-quality lens.
Matt your videos are awesome. I recently picked up a Nikon FE2 as my first film camera and it's great to see these lens comparisons. I picked up the voigtlander 40mm f2 ultron thanks to your video. Now I might need to get the voigtlander 28mm.
Thanks MC, yes I highly recommend the 28mm! I use mine on my FE2/FM2 a lot for travel trips. Good optics and size (esp. the old version shown in this video).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt. I actually love the aesthetics of the new versions! especially the silver rim ones like my 40mm. 28mm is a fav focal length so i'm looking forward to it. Keep up all the great work.
I know you probably don't want to, but I would have like to have seen how the 7Artisans 28mm f1.4 would have faired with that bunch. I picked one up early in the year and am knocked out by just how good it is (but I have nothing to compare it with!)
You can find the Nikons cheaps on eBay if you just want a lens to compare to yours as a benchmark. If it is sharp enough for you though I wouldn't worry :) ..and if I ever get one to test I will share my thoughts no problem!
It's so rewarding to see your clips on RUclips, very informative and unbiased. Sorry do you have any opinions on "Voigtlander ULTRON 28mm f/1.9 Aspherical", is it any better than Voigtlander 28/2? Thanks
Hi Serge, the v1 28mm Elmarit is not great (worse than my 24mm Elmarit), the v2 28mm R is excellent but costs more. The 28mm M Elmarit is still better.
Thank you for another very interesting valuable video. As a possible future video, I would be very interested your discussion about 20mm (or thereabouts) lenses.
I use the Elmarit Asph on M10 and M6 and find it perfect (punchy precise rendition, build, size/weight, ergonomics), EXCEPT it is f/2.8 and 0.7m, which makes noticeable differential focus effects a bit too difficult and is substantially less flexible in low light. I use the 28mm f/1.4E on Nikon D850 (now replaced by Z7) and Df, and that is also optically and ergonomically perfect EXCEPT for size/weight (balances very well on larger DSLRs though). Did you try that one? I am now looking at replacing the Elmarit Asph by the new Voigtlander 28mm f/2 VM that you seem to like so much (why did you return it?) hoping it might perform well also on the Z7. Not seen that combination tested yet. And then the new version of the 28mm SLII looks like a great companion for the Df and my old film bodies, less super thin than the version you tested, which for me implies better ergonomics. Thanks again for your channel and group testing, they are really useful! ;)
Thanks Aristide, yes the Elmarit is a great size and performs well but the new v2 Ultron will give you f2 for low light. I had it on loan to test so it went back. I own the others so need to sell a few before looking to get more ha. Yes the new SLIIS looks nice. I use my SL mostly for film on FM2/FE2/FG-20 mostly! Thanks re Nikon 1.4 too.
Subbed! Hoping to find some Leica camera model comparison reviews vid & see where you stand on the new SL2 camera & l lens. Are the y becoming like all the others or do they still produce something special?
Hi Ted, thanks! Yes I have nearly 200 vids now and many are Leica related. If you want to find videos easier sign up to the blog - MrLeica.com and you get a free search tool for YT. I haven't used many SL lense so far but hopefully more going forward.
Hi Matt. I recently added the Canon LTM 28mm lens to my collection and LOVED it until I tried shooting in difficult light. It was late afternoon and the sun was low and creating these really great shadows and flares. The Canon lens just didn't do very well. Is there another lens you'd recommend specifically for more challenging light situations? I know I would miss the INCREDIBLY TINY size of the canon, but wondering if there are other better options.... (Prefer not to spend on Leica brand, but will if I need to...) Thanks!
Hi Rivki, yes it’s great but not for say client work or where needs to perform in all conditions. I use Voigtlander Ultron 28 f2 v2 for client work and currently the TTA28/5.6 for fun. (See those vids).
Shoot a test chart. Colors and bands. And compare. Then do images. I used to test lenses shooting a tabloid full frame. Let's see the edges and center sharpness
Matt, I tend to use my m-lenses on the SL. How does the SL28mm stack up to these lenses? I know it is not an M-mount, but since both SL and M mount can be used on the SL body, it seems like it should be part of the test, just like the TL 18mm was part of the test. Thanks.
Great point Rudiger. If I can grow this channel so that I can get access to SL lenses then I will be sure to test them. Currently I am testing most of my own lenses. The TL18 is said to be SL quality for APS-C but the SL28 would win overall i'd expect being FF too.
Really useful video, thank you for testing all these lenses. I was wondering if you have a view on how the TT artisans 5.6 would compare with centre sharpness with the canon LTM and others? 28mm is my favourite focal length and looking to buy a 28mm ais for my new Nikon FA, although the series E 28mm was an eye opener.
Hi very thank you I have a Leica 28 f 2.0 super lens, I just have not done that much with it. Also can you tell me how much better is M10 to M240, would I be better off with the M240 please me know.
Interesting video. The 28 Elmarit Asph. (at its optimal f8) is my latest and current favourite M lens. Suspect you must have found a particularly good example of the Canon 28, but I'll certainly look out for one to try - a no-brainer at the price. KUTGW.
how the Voigtlander 28mm SLIIN perform in term of edge resolution and color rendition compare to AIS 28mm f2.8 ? I like the Voigtlander 28mm SLIIS being more compact lens, but it is 3 times more expensive.
Good question. I’ll do a follow up video when I get chance. Stopped down a bit both will be fine I’m sure. I’m taking the SL on my next trip. (It easily beat my 24/25mm Leica/Minolta/Zeiss lenses, again I need to do that video too). Stay tuned!
Nice review Matt! I'm very tempted by the little Canon as I'd like to get something wider than 50 for my M3 for travel. Have you (or anyone reading this!) any experience of the Canon finder that is often sold with it? How does it compare with the Leica one? I just met a guy in the street the other day that was shooting an M7 with a 28mm and we got talking and I had a look through his Leica finder and I liked what I saw but they are on the pricey side!
Thanks Paul! I have a 35mm Canon finder, its OK but I much prefer Voigtlander finders. Leica are nice too but cost even more as you say. See the recent 28mm camera video and it will make more sense.
To my liking Nikon 28mm Ai-S seems like a best choice, but I can't find it anywhere in my region :( And the Voigtlander F-mount prices is absolutely ridiculous ($500-700)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom if I get a chance to find one at a reasonable price, I'll grab one of the two lenses - Nikkor Ai-s or Voigtlander, both seems pretty great c:
Thanks, yes if ever I don't need a shallow DOF I need to remind myself that the CL and it's lenses are optically as good as the SL and SL lenses (so the designer says) (ie. better than M glass)
another great test and great comparison... well done ... Elmarit is doing good but I really like the contrast and the real "pop up" of the new Voigtlander Ultron V2 :-)
Hi what about the 28mm F2.0 Summicron Vs the 28mm f2.0 Voigtlander which is better, also I have the third version of Leica 28mm f2.8 how good is it? to the 28mm f 2.0 Summicron please let me know? Thank you
thanks for this! found you thanks to your orion 15 review - I’m just getting into this area of photography (not exactly digital rangefinder as I shoot with a Ricoh GXR M) and LOVE the soviet lenses but figured I’d have to shell out for an Elmarit if I wanted to take seriously sharp stuff. Thanks for the feedback, happy I could help! If you’re still stuck regarding 28mm we can jump on Zoom sometime and I can tell you pros and cons of the Orion, Elmarit and others (see MrLeica.com for more info)
Hey @ahoy if you don’t already I recommend getting the viewfinder for the GXR it makes manual focusing the manual lenses super easy compared to just the back screen. It’s such a fun little camera
With a GXR-M you have a plethora of choices. Excellent inexpensive choices (with a Canon FL/FD to Leica M adapter) include the Canon FL 28/3.5 or FD 28/3.5, either can be had for a song and are a good choice to see if you like a 28 on the GXR-M (effective 42mm focal length).
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom That's not good news.. The new Skopar has a big barrel of distortion, and I've noticed chromatic aberration. I will have to buy 28mm Nikkor AIs.

Hey! I was wondering if you'd be able to help me. I own a Canon sl2/200d and I'm looking to buy a 28mm or near prime lens under $500 that is high quality optics. I can stretch my budget a little if needed. I don't mind going manual if the optics are stunning. Ideally a 1.4 or faster aperture. Can you please suggest what might be the best option for me? Thank you 🙏
Hey Elazar, sorry for the delay. I had to Google SL2 as i'm less up to speed on Canon! :) 1.4 28mm are not common and those that are good are very expensive (Say Nikkor 1.4) f2 you can find easier and f2.8 you can get excellent lenses for that money. Check out the Voigtlander 28 SL lens in Canon mount if you can find on eBay.
Just to point out the Nikon 28f/2.8 you have is pre CRC coating and that makes a huge difference in IQ so in reality the Nikon ais with serial numbers starting with 9 .......... will outperform any of these .But not the contax zeiss C/y 28f2.8 and even sharper again was the contax28f/2 hollywood,a rare piece of glass but oh it is crazy for that zeiss pop (3D)
Hi Lui, sorry I don't own that one. I nearly bought it a few times but ended up getting the Orion-15 instead. The Summaron is a softer look lens more like the Orion.

On the other hand, the 1m to 15cm takes a lot of turn, enabling a very precise focusing for close ups. It is also very light and compact (unless you put a standard width UV filter on it that significantly increases the lens height).
Thanks Zollie, yes I love the Skopar SLs too! I use them even on Leica iii cameras! (20mm and 28mm)(scale focus)
Thanks, yes I didn't expect it to be that good either! As you say there is copy variation but hopefully after a clean it will be perfect.
Love the tabs underneath the video to allow scrolling directly to the topic of interest. My focus in primary on M/LTM-mount lenses, so I directly jumped into these lens tests in your video. Thanks for doing the test!
Thanks MB, yes those tabs hurt me as people watch for less time (and RUclips rewards videos on watch time) but hopefully it lets people find what they need easier. It is a new feature from YT so you should see it more in the future.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I had no idea that RUclips rewards for the time people watch a video! This explains why many other posters don't like doing it! Appreciate your effort here!
@@MB-or8js yes # views x view duration is the most important thing on YT. And if get more of this then YT shows video to more people (helped by likes and comments too) so it’s a cycle. That’s why everyone asks for likes and comments as it makes a difference.
The Nikon 28mm 2.8 Ais is such an underrated lens. Right up there with the best of them imo.
Yes it’s good. I found the Skopar 28 very similar and half the size so I use that more now.
Beautiful selection of lenses. If you get a chance to nab a Nikon 28mm f1.4D, jump at it. It's a masterpiece.
Thank you, yes a few others mention this lens. It must be good!
Hi Matt
On Nikon, the 28/1.4 AFD or the 28/2 "Hollywood" Zeiss
On Leica M, summilux 28 is the King
Thanks! Yes a saw some amazing images with that Zeiss lens years ago, when I shot Nikon DSLRs.
That Canon is a beauty! I have an early Nikon 28 3.5 non ai that is a favorite.
Thanks Ryan, yes I love the Canon on my Leica iii. Yes Nikon made many 28s!
Thank you so much for this review. How great, it is that someone has so many different lenses to test. Once again - many thanks for your work.
Thanks, no problem! It is one of 5 similar reviews so see the others for more of the same.
Thanks Neil, i'm happy that you can confirm that it is a great lens! (see the end of the video I show the new version as a screenshot) 28mm SL II-S :)
Thanks yes I share a photo of it in the video near the end. I'm happy they were smart enough to release it.
Hi Matt it s a pity you didn t have the opportunity of testing Zeiss bio gon 28mm f2.8. Any knowledge on this lens ?
I’ve got the 21 & 25. See those videos
Nice review. I recently read a positive review of the Zeiss f2.8 28mm ZM Biogon, intended for Leica M mount. It focuses to 0.5 m and is very sharp. Its price, at around $700-880, seems very reasonable for a high-quality lens.
Thanks Steve, yes I think you cannot go wrong with the ZM Biogons. I use the 21mm and 25mm versions (see those vids)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks. I will look at these videos.
The Nikkor AI-s has the most natural colour rendition IMHO, and is a sharp as anyone would reasonably need, except for the usual suspects...
Thanks, and yes I thought it was sharp until I got the AIS version.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I think the 7artisans is astonishingly sharp. It has some weight to it though (488g!) but is f1.4 so great in low light.

Thank you for another very interesting valuable video. As a possible future video, I would be very interested your discussion about 20mm (or thereabouts) lenses.
Thanks, I might try to do a 20-21mm video one day but not it the garden and not testing close up only. It’s on the list so stay tuned!
Hi! Have you considered Minolta G-Rokkor? It seems to be a very good one....but ridiculously expensive...
I’ve not tried that one yet!
Now we have a new option: Brightin Star 28mm f2.8 m mount pancake lenses.
Thanks! Yes each year there is "new competition" being released
It would be awesome to have the 7Artisans 28mm f1.4 on that test!
Thanks, maybe in the future if I get one to test!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks, Matt. I'll check those out! Appreciate the input.
Shoot a test chart. Colors and bands. And compare. Then do images. I used to test lenses shooting a tabloid full frame. Let's see the edges and center sharpness
Thanks Carlos, yes agree edge sharpness is important for 28mm. As I tend to shoot portraits in B&W I was testing the centre sharpness here.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thank-you. Great Channel. Hoping it grows as much as you do!
Really useful video, thank you for testing all these lenses. I was wondering if you have a view on how the TT artisans 5.6 would compare with centre sharpness with the canon LTM and others?

Hi very thank you I have a Leica 28 f 2.0 super lens, I just have not done that much with it. Also can you tell me how much better is M10 to M240, would I be better off with the M240 please me know.
Hi thanks, I think most people agree the M10 is better in most regards, size, colour, speed, ISO... the Leica 28/2 is nice!
Interesting video. The 28 Elmarit Asph. (at its optimal f8) is my latest and current favourite M lens. Suspect you must have found a particularly good example of the Canon 28, but I'll certainly look out for one to try - a no-brainer at the price. KUTGW.
Thanks, yes i've never not liked images from the Elmarit and it focuses to 0.7m. But yes the Canon did better than I expected!
Hey Matt! Nice video! Does the nikkor 28mm f2.8 ais fit on Leica m6?
Thanks! Yes via adapter, zone focus only
Hi Matt, the Robert White discount code doesn't work for me...
Hi Mike, can you message me - @MrLeicaCom and I’ll speak to RW for you
how the Voigtlander 28mm SLIIN perform in term of edge resolution and color rendition compare to AIS 28mm f2.8 ?
To my liking Nikon 28mm Ai-S seems like a best choice, but I can't find it anywhere in my region :(
And the Voigtlander F-mount prices is absolutely ridiculous ($500-700)
I found the Voigtlander used thankfully. I use that over the Nikkor as half the size.

Another good video, thanks for putting in the 18 TL in the test. The 18 TL doesn’t get much love outside of your channel.
Thanks, yes if ever I don't need a shallow DOF I need to remind myself that the CL and it's lenses are optically as good as the SL and SL lenses (so the designer says) (ie. better than M glass)

thanks for this! found you thanks to your orion 15 review - I’m just getting into this area of photography (not exactly digital rangefinder as I shoot with a Ricoh GXR M) and LOVE the soviet lenses but figured I’d have to shell out for an Elmarit if I wanted to take seriously sharp stuff.
Oh, and get the viewfinder.
Will you complete the comparison with the new VOIGTLÄNDER 28mm f / 2.8 Color-Skopar SLII-S? Voigtlander Color-Skoparex 28mm F2.8 AR ?
Probably not, the new Skopar is optically the same as the one I tested as I understand so it’s a great performer.

Hey Michael. For me i'd still get the Ultron (The Elmarit ASPH small version is a nice size, the one I have but f2 is more useful).

Hey Elazar, sorry for the delay. I enjoy your videos because they are very informative but the reality is that the lenses you are featuring are very expensive and if you get a used one most that are a reasonable price are not in that good of a condition.
