- I will often get questions about the kind of gear I wear, use, and carry. I thought I would do a brief video about it and provide some links for you to find the same or similar items to those I use should you be interested.
As I mentioned in the video, I find that Columbia or Merrell close-out stores can be good places to find great equipment at reasonable prices. For example, every year around Black Friday, I go to the Merrell outlet in Camarillo, California as I live in Southern California. They have had consistently good deals. Columbia outlets are also great, particularly their clearance outlets. For example, in Cabazon California, there is a Columbia outlet, but a few stores down from that one is a clearance outlet. It is the luck of the draw what you find there, but on my last trip, I got the hiking pants in the video for 20$ and a 150$ raincoat for 35$.
Below I have listed specific things from the video that you can get on Amazon. Full disclosure, if you use the link provided and you buy the item, I get a small percentage of the sale. If you choose to do that, great. But I also wanted you to just be able to see the things up close should you want more information about the products.

Loving the channel, just like Josh you have an extremely likable personality.
Makes it so easy to watch any video you create.
I'd love a video of your backstory, career you retired from, passions (I know history is one!) early life, music choices (Josh mentioned you love listening to a certain song at sunrise) which is awesome!
Your tombstone video was fantastic because I love how you teach and explain, it just works and it's to the point details that are very intriguing.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Wow a video about myself. Might be a great idea to help insomniacs! Hahaha. Seriously, so nice of you to even suggest that. But here's some info for you...
I am still working as a professor of special education, training teachers to work with kids with severe disabilities. Grew up in New Jersey, played basketball in high school and college a bit. Love the bands Yes, Kansas, and others of that genre. The song I always hear in my mind is the theme song from the movie "Big Country." Here is a link ruclips.net/video/AQTH3a0mjR8/видео.html especially the part at about 1:50 . That comes into my mind when I suddenly see something of incredible natural beauty burst into my view like the burst in the song! Thanks for the questions!
@@popshikingthank you for the reply! I listened to the part you said and was picturing some of Josh's videos at sunrise trying to live y'all moment lol
I love taking this journey with you guys, it keeps me motivated for my upcoming trips. (We are Houston Texas based and love going west to Colorado, Utah, New Mexico etc.)
I absolutely love the western vibes and loved Tombstone. So I greatly appreciate and understand your love for all that as well.
Pops😊...I just want to say every Saturday night my husband and I make a yummy meal and find Josh and Pops videos. We always look forward to our Saturday nights! We cant find anything on TV close to be as enjoyable as you and Josh's videos!
Wow! That is so cool and means a lot to us! We will do our best to keep the content coming. Thanks so much.
@popshiking you bet! We enjoy your videos so much! You made our New England trip, Salem and Boston trip fantastic, thank you for that!! You 2 are much more enjoyable than anything on network TV lol.
Nice video!
Thanks!
Thanks for including me in the thumbnail!
@Blackfilmguild Didn't know you had gray in your beard! Hahaha!
@@popshiking I am hitting 40 .Lotta grey coming in these days. Hope to run into you soon!
@Blackfilmguild Will look forward to that.
Great thumbnail, wondering who that was!
That was very helpful, as there were a few things I hadn't thought of but smart to carry!
@BrancyCDA Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Thx for the gear review.. I’ll have to take a second look at sling packs as I never really considered them..
I like mine. Was a gift from Josh’s wife Amie.
Thanks Pops!
@lynnmacleod1879 Thanks so much for stopping by!
We are always at the Columbia Outlet here in St. Augustine!! We have gotten some great deals on gear there!!
@christopherlands2706 Yeah they are great spots. Thx for stopping by!
I am going to bringing a journal with me!
@deisygonzales5980 Cool! Gives me an excuse to sit in some beautiful spots for a few minutes longer and take them in. I also just think a lot when I’m hiking and sometimes I get an idea worth remembering.
Thank you for another great video. Just curious, do you ever carry a satellite phone? I often find myself hiking in locations where there is no cell phone service and I’ve thought of purchasing one.
It depends on where we are. Josh carries one when we know we are going to be off the grid for a day or more. Probably not a bad idea in any kind of remote place.
Pops using AI for the thumbnail? Love to see it being utilized. Random question, but we’ve seen you where an Illinois shirt or hat in some videos. Any connection to Illinois or just a fan of the basketball team?
@windycitytwins4487 Undergrad at Wheaton college, doc at U of I Champaign and both my kids born there!
My daughter and I are planning a trip to Alaska next year and using videos when you and Josh went to plan our trip. How did you like the Yaktrax? Would you recommend them for Alaska?
@debramckenna1011 if you are just hiking on a trail with a little ice or even icy sidewalks they are pretty good. But should you venture out onto a glacier you would need crampons. Yaktrax are not difficult to carry very light weight.
@@popshiking Thank you for answering my question. I'm glad you started posting videos, lots of great information and inspiration.
Do you carry most the items every time you hike or does it change depending on the length or intensity?
@prowrestlingisart6742 The only things I don’t always carry are the yaktrax and the puffy maroon jacket. Otherwise I wear or carry all the rest. It looks like a lot but all fits in that small bag.
@@popshiking i’m impressed all of that can fit in the bag!
