I came back to this video for nostalgia of the mod and that was one of the first things that immediately hit me. There are so many parallels to the original BTW mod and Create. It's fascinating to see how many features from BTW that are just in vanilla now and many of the mechanical aspects live on in Create.
7 years later, and: - They're adding a saw, though it requires no power and does different things. - Cauldrons (as decoration, not functional) are in. - Pistons are in and have been for a long time. - Concrete is in but works highly differently. A little less useful but a better texture. - There's an "observer" block similar, possibly the same as, the detector. - Hoppers are a thing. They require no power and have a smaller inventory. Also, bows work different since this video but crossbows fill the old role of an instant arrow shot. One step back and then one step forward again?
This was one of the first minecraft videos I ever watched. Shortly after i got the game. This was a nostalgia overload for me and honestly isnt a bad video by today's standards. Thank you yogscast for introducing me i dont regret anything
I remember for this video there used to be a link to the Better than Wolves mod page on the Minecraft forum. The guy who did this mod was a grumpy asshole and so many Yognaughts spammed the forum asking him to add the mod to Yogbox that he completely lost his shit. Ah the good old days.
I mean you can kinda tell he’s a grumpy asshole by his attitude toward wolves. Even with lewis trying to present it optimistically you can still just *feel* the dude seething at you through the mod
I'm just now realizing that most of the mod spotlights they did back in the day was just Lewis pre-recording footage of him ballsing around in the mod and then showing and explaining it to Simon.
It's kinda wild how this mod went from being a mod full of super cool, handy blocks and items you can add to your vanilla game to a hardcore-only game that barely resembles Minecraft, where you forget about the cool blocks because they're just yet another thing you need to survive in the world It's basically an entirely different game. The Create mod did a pretty good job at replicating this version of Better Than Wolves for modern Minecraft Though Better Than Wolves will always hold a special place because of how badly I wanted to play it as a kid lol
It's crazy to see how much of this mod has ended up in the base game. It's even more insane how freaking long it took when the concepts were already there in this mod.
Honestly, glad it didn't happen. Water Wheels are great for mods but don't really sit well with vanilla. Same reason why I hate all minecraft versions past 1.8
This is what minecraft should have done rather than going all RPG like. Minecraft has always been a fantastic building/crafting/factory game with the right mods however even with TONS of mods it's still a rather crap RPG in all honesty, the gameplay in general is just not made for being an RPG.
As of today, Better Than Wolves is *STILL IN DEVELOPMENT.* However, due to FlowerChild's, ah... idiosyncrasies?... the mod is incompatible with basically all other mods, and most versions of Minecraft. The most recent release, which was five days ago (!!!), is made for Minecraft version 1.5.2. And here I thought I was old school playing 1.7.10 four years ago and 1.12.2 today...
You see, this is what I love about the Yogscast- this video was made in 2011, and is still being watched and loved two years after. That just shows how everlasting the humor of Simon and Lewis is, LONG LIVE THE YOGSCAST!
Exactly, how is is even before the hunger bar was a thing we still had mods making minecraft better then Vanilla is today, 11 years later. This version of Minecraft is better and had more features with a single mod, then what we have now... hahaha.
Time to compare Minecraft now to BetterThanWolves then. Soulfire is similar to the stoked hibachi fire. Stonecutter is a weird equivalent of the saw, for stone. Netherite is a simplified soulforged steel. Campfires I guess. Lanterns, hoppers, concrete. Stacked food. Scaffolding. Observers/target blocks.
Features in this mod that have been implemented (in some capacity) to the base game: Cauldrons. (Different functionality.) Stackable Food. (Thank goodness.) Lamps. (That are activated by Redstone.) Sawmill. (Similar functionality, not as useful as the modded version.) Observers. (Practically the same functionality.) "Elevators." (Slime Blocks fulfill this purpose, and more. They are much more useful.) Hoppers. (Practically the same functionality, modded ones need power but can store more items in them.) "Cement." (Concrete is easier to make and comes in a variety of colors!)
This mod was really ahead of its time. So many advanced features. In beta minecraft! It was very difficult to implement stuff like this back then. Still amazed.
We need a new mod that follows the same mantra, should be called "better than mob vote", implement a bunch of reworks to cooking thay are along the lines of farmers delight. And expand all of the new little additions from the past couple years to have meaningful game contributions.

Seriously, I pitty this FlowerChild guy almost as much as I dispise him. He is an amazingly talented modder, but he uses his talent to deliberately spite the developers and the part of the modding community that doesn't think his mod makes the "perfect" Minecraft (i.e. the vast majority) rather than to enhance the gaming experience for everyone.
I think he is trying to send a strong message of frustration clearly he was expecting amazing things from mojang in the next update but instead they gave only wolfs so he made a mod and put his ideas that will make Minecraft a hell of alot better and said any of these ideas are "better than wolfs".

.mr You It's more than that, he intentionally makes his mods incompatible with other mods. He's doing the same thing over in the KSP community, there's something called the Comprehensive Kerbal Archive Network (CKAN) which helps players to install and manage multiple mods and he made very clear he doesn't want his KSP mods to work with anything in CKAN. It's like he can't handle sharing the attention with other people. If people are going to use his mods, they have to use his exclusively.
well many other mods don't have the minecraft theme like thermal expansion so it will be quite strange to putt them together besides modding isn't easy PTNLemay
.mr You thermal expansion goes really well with buildcraft... it would be easier to make his mods compatible... and why not let people combine his mod with others, maybe there's a mod that can make his even better...
This video is from 2011 - LONG before hoppers were added to the vanilla version of Minecraft. The hoppers in Better Than Wolves work a bit differently to the vanilla hoppers, anyway.
